Chapter 286 Revenge
Company Commander Luo Hu had already roughly determined from the sound of the explosions that Hill 602 had been shelled on the way there.
He kept calling Li Hai, but couldn't get through, and realized something was wrong.
Luo Hu ran back to the other two high grounds as fast as he could and immediately ordered the nearest 5th squad to provide support. He then personally led the 6th squad towards the direction of Hill 602.
However, the South Vietnamese army was prepared. They used artillery fire to block the mountain road for reinforcements, preventing anyone from passing through.
This has turned Hill 602 into an isolated island, with no other option but to save itself.
Fortunately, the South Vietnamese army did not know that they had buried all our soldiers in the cave, so they dared not go up the mountain rashly, but carefully made their way up from the foot of the mountain.
They had just reached the halfway point of the mountain when they realized that the forest was quiet and there were no sentries in sight.
Their commander was paranoid and had been frightened by our army, so he did not launch another attack but instead chose a low-lying area to rest.
This place happened to be only a hundred meters away from where Zhang Fugui was lying in ambush, but the rocks and trees covering the mountain blocked the South Vietnamese army's view. They did not find Zhang Fugui, and Zhang Fugui did not find them either.
Zhang Fugui was still immersed in the grief of his comrades being buried. He focused intently on digging stones, trying to rescue them.
His hands were worn raw, revealing the white bones beneath.
Blood mixed with rainwater dripped down his arm and rolled down to his feet, staining the puddles red.
He was in excruciating pain, which slowed him down.
Left with no other choice, he tore his shirt, tore off a few strips of cloth, and used them to bandage the wound. In that brief moment, he heard hushed voices not far away.
Zhang Fugui was startled, thinking that the company commander had brought men to rescue them.
But as he turned around, he felt something was wrong. If it was his own people coming to reinforce him, why didn't he call out their names?
Firstly, it was to remind them that reinforcements had arrived, thus boosting their morale.
Secondly, it can deter the enemy and prevent them from making any rash moves.
In that split second, he hid and listened carefully to what the other party was saying. When he heard the strange and unfamiliar tone of the other party's voice, Zhang Fugui judged that it must be the South Vietnamese army that had sneaked up.
He immediately stopped digging, slung his submachine gun over his shoulder, picked up the dozen or so guns around him, loaded them all with bullets, and then found several hidden places to put the guns away.
After doing all this, Zhang Fugui lay down and hid in a spot, with the other guns about a meter away from him, within arm's reach.
The so-called outpost is just a small hole less than a meter in diameter, now filled with mud.
Zhang Fugui huddled his entire body inside the cave, leaving only his helmeted head exposed. He didn't have time to weave a grass ring for disguise, so he grabbed a handful of rotten leaves and put them on his head.
Time passed second by second, and the strange voices grew closer and closer. A few minutes later, Zhang Fugui saw a large group of soldiers walking up from the southwest.
The rain was still pouring down, and the roads were very narrow and muddy, so the South Vietnamese troops could only walk slowly in long lines.
Under the command of an officer, everyone climbed up past the outpost where Zhang Fugui was hiding. The officer, seemingly afraid of death, walked at the very back of the group.
Zhang Fugui stretched his hand out of the mud, gripped the gun handle tightly, and hooked his fingertips onto the trigger.
He was waiting for an opportunity; if the officer moved forward a little further, he would open fire and take care of him first.
But to everyone's surprise, the officer didn't seem to be in a hurry to attack. Instead, he stopped and sat down on a large rock next to him, took out a cigarette from his pocket, lit it, and started smoking.
Zhang Fugui used all his strength to avoid coughing from the pungent smell of smoke. The two were so close that he could even hear the officer's breathing and the sound of fireworks exploding.
If the enemy officer were observant enough, he would have noticed the streaks of blood floating in the rainwater at his feet; that blood was flowing from Zhang Fugui's hand, which had been cut by rocks.
But the officer seemed distracted and completely out of sorts.
After finishing a cigarette, he casually flicked the cigarette butt to the side, and it landed right on Zhang Fugui's helmet.
The officer didn't even glance at them, and walked forward without turning his head.
Five minutes later, Zhang Fugui slowly crawled out of the mud and quickly hid behind the large rock where the officer had been sitting, peeking out to look ahead.
For some reason, the South Vietnamese soldiers didn't go far; they huddled together as if discussing something.
Seeing this, Zhang Fugui made the decisive decision to fire.
He never imagined that this hasty decision would instantly change the situation on the battlefield and become a classic case of the counterattack against South Vietnam.
Bullets rained down from behind the South Vietnamese troops, killing several instantly. A few others turned to look back, but Zhang Fugui had already grabbed a second gun...
As Zhang Fugui, who was getting better and better at the fighting, picked up his tenth gun, he found that there were no more live targets in front of him. All the South Vietnamese soldiers had fallen into the mud and water.
He was a little confused. How come the enemies had all fallen before he had even run out of bullets?
Ten minutes later, when Company Commander Luo Hu led reinforcements to break through the enemy's line of fire and rush up, they found a man covered in mud kneeling at the entrance of the cave, digging at rocks.
Zhang Fugui turned his head and saw Luo Hu. After a few seconds of stunned silence, he scrambled to his side and hugged him, bursting into tears.
This was the first time Zhang Fugui had broken down in tears since enlisting in the army several years ago.
At this moment, he was not a superhero who had defeated the South Vietnamese army, but a survivor who had lost his comrades.
Seeing that the soldiers were all immersed in a sorrowful atmosphere and no one was speaking, Luo Hu broke the silence.
"Comrades, I know you are all very upset, but we must remain vigilant. The South Vietnamese army has suffered such heavy losses that it will not let this go and may very well launch a retaliatory operation."
His estimate was entirely correct, just as the soldiers were working intensively to clear out an abandoned cave on the summit of Hill 602.
The South Vietnamese army indeed organized another attack on the site, this time launching a surprise attack without prior artillery bombardment.
This time, the South Vietnamese army sent a whole company.
Meanwhile, the two squads brought by Luo Hu and Zhang Fugui were putting up a fierce resistance.
Suddenly, a group of dark figures appeared out of nowhere on the hillside to the southwest.
These men were like a pack of starving wolves on the grasslands; they saw a sinister green glint in their eyes as they watched the attacking South Vietnamese troops.
"Comrade Jiang, how can we fight back now that we have no weapons?"
"Wait."
Everyone was puzzled, only to see Jiang Ruzhen disappear into the woods like a ghostly elf, and then suddenly reappear ten meters away.
In the blink of an eye, it disappeared again, only to reappear fifteen meters away.
She appeared silently behind the South Vietnamese army like a ghost.
I don't know what method they used to instantly blow the heads off more than a dozen people.
When she reappeared in front of Li Hai and the others carrying more than a dozen submachine guns, their pupils dilated, and they stared at her in shock.
Is this even human?
Jiang Ruzhen didn't allow them to lose their focus and shoved all the guns into their hands.
"Don't ask anything, go and get revenge. I don't know how to use a gun, so I won't get involved."
After saying that, Jiang Ruzhen plopped down on the ground.
Li Hai then noticed that Jiang Ruzhen's face was deathly pale and her forehead was covered in cold sweat.
My entire back was soaked with sweat.
Li Hai asked anxiously, "Comrade Jiang, what's wrong?"
Jiang Ruzhen waved her hand, signaling everyone not to worry about her. Li Hai also knew that opportunities were fleeting.
He led the rest of the group to immediately surround the South Vietnamese army from behind.
The South Vietnamese army was ambushed from behind, which immediately caused a commotion.
Luo Hu immediately noticed this from above, and his expression instantly brightened as he shouted.
"Comrades, our reinforcements have arrived! Give them a good beating!"
"Alright, we'll make sure these South Vietnamese soldiers never leave alive."
"Kill these bastards and avenge the platoon leader and the others."
Fueled by hatred, the group quickly wiped out more than a hundred enemies.
When Luo Hu and his men came down with their guns, they were stunned to see the spirited, seemingly resurrected soldiers standing before them.
"Li Hai, you guys aren't dead?"
