Chapter 285 Unleashing Potential
The South Vietnamese army seems to be taking advantage of this extreme weather to sneak up and eliminate Hill 602, this "thorn in their side," in one fell swoop.
Half an hour after Luo Hu left, it was Zhang Fugui's turn to stand guard with another young soldier.
The young soldier's post was on the mountainside, close to the cave, so he could quickly return to report the situation. Zhang Fugui's post, on the other hand, was located on a distant mountaintop, and he didn't know the current situation.
At this moment, Zhang Fugui carefully got up from the ground to observe his surroundings. His position was high, and he could clearly see where the shells landed.
He crawled up the trench to the outpost, but before he could catch his breath, he suddenly heard a cannon blast, and stones and mud rained down on him, almost leveling the small outpost.
Artillery rarely goes out on foggy days because visibility is poor.
However, Hill 602 was too close to the South Vietnamese army's positions, and the two armies had been locked in a stalemate for five years. The South Vietnamese army had already calculated the target locations, and the shells landed precisely on the positions.
At this moment, Zhang Fugui could still hear squad leader Li Hai calling him from the cave entrance: "It's dangerous outside, come in quickly. It's okay if there are no sentries there for the time being."
"Squad leader, the outpost is low-lying and there's a big rock to the west, so I'm fine here. I just don't know how Xiao Sanzi is doing."
"It's alright, Xiao Sanzi has already entered the cave." Just as he finished speaking, another shell from the South Vietnamese army came flying in, and Li Hai fell silent.
The shell knocked Zhang Fugui unconscious after it landed.
After an unknown amount of time, Zhang Fugui finally woke up amidst the torrential rain.
After clearing away the mud and water from the makeshift outpost, he looked out through the rain curtain and suddenly realized that something was wrong with the cave.
The entrance to the cave can't be found!
Zhang Fugui hastily wiped the rain off his face and continued to peer into the cave, only to discover that the entrance was completely blocked by rocks.
He ran over quickly, intending to move the branches and stones away with his hands.
His idea was simple: he would move the load from the outside, and the people inside would put in a little more effort, and the hole would be opened up quickly.
After he struggled to move the large rocks outside, the situation before him filled him with utter despair.
The cave had been blown up, and layers of rubble completely covered the entrance. Even worse, heavy rain was pouring in through the cracks in the rocks, and soon the comrades inside the cave would suffocate from lack of oxygen.
Zhang Fugui was utterly despondent, but should he choose to save people or go and observe the enemy situation?
If the South Vietnamese army were to sneak up while he was rescuing people, the high ground would be at risk of being lost.
Zhang Fugui wiped away the tears and rain from his face haphazardly, gathered all the dozen or so rifles he could find in the platoon, filled each magazine with bullets, wrapped them tightly in plastic sheeting, and then continued digging through the rocks.
He called out his comrades' names in a trembling voice that was almost a sob, but he heard no response except for the sound of rain.
At this moment, Zhang Fugui was unaware that all his comrades buried in the cave had been taken into Jiang Ruzhen's spatial storage.
Jiang Ruzhen originally intended to issue a warning, but as soon as she opened her mouth, a shell landed precisely.
Instantly, her brain started working at lightning speed.
In the instant the shell exploded, she unleashed all her potential, her mind felt like it had exploded, and the intense pain caused her to bleed from all seven orifices.
But it also created an opportunity for her; in that instant, everything in front of her seemed to be paused.
She could see the sparks from the exploding shells through the blood mist, and the rubble falling from the cave ceiling hitting the soldiers.
Some people had already been hit and were unconscious, while others were still running away while covering their heads. In her eyes, everyone had become an immovable statue.
Ignoring the excruciating pain in her head, Jiang Ruzhen ran towards everyone with all her might, collecting everyone she could reach into her spatial storage.
After all forty-one people were taken into the space, she felt as if a century had passed.
But in reality, it didn't even last a second.
The moment she jumped into the space, the entire cave exploded and collapsed.
The whole process was thrilling and exciting, and Jiang Ruzhen lay on the ground in the space, panting heavily.
Li Hai was hit on the head by a large rock. He stood there in a daze, clutching his wound, not knowing what had happened.
All he remembered was a shell that blew up the cave and a large rock that hit him on the head.
Then, the scenery shifted, and he found himself in an unfamiliar place.
He looked around blankly and found Jiang Ruzhen suddenly appearing in front of him, her face covered in blood.
"Comrade Jiang, what happened to you?" He disregarded the situation and quickly stepped forward to carefully examine Jiang Ruzhen's injuries.
"I'm fine." Jiang Ruzhen shook her dizzy head with her eyes closed.
"How are you, comrades? Are your injuries serious?"
Li Hai quickly urged the two equally bewildered young soldiers to go and check on their comrades.
"Reporting to the platoon leader, fifteen people are seriously injured, twenty people are slightly injured, and six people are uninjured."
"Great, great, that's wonderful."
Li Hai felt relieved; as long as no comrades were killed, it was a victory.
"Platoon Leader Li, do you see that pool over there?" Jiang Ruzhen couldn't open her eyes; they were burning with pain.
"Yes, I saw it."
"Put all the seriously wounded people in the pool, and give the lightly wounded people the water in the pool to drink."
"Why?"
"Don't ask why. Help me over there, and you can drink some spring water too."
Jiang Ruzhen's tone left no room for doubt. Li Hai suddenly remembered what Company Commander Luo had told him before he left, that he should cooperate fully with Jiang Ruzhen no matter what.
"yes."
Li Hai treated Jiang Ruzhen like a superior, standing at attention and giving a serious reply before helping her to the spring.
Jiang Ruzhen plunged her entire head into the spring and began to pour water.
After drinking until his stomach was full, he leaned back and soaked his body in the pool, letting out a long sigh.
Li Hai, not understanding why, imitated Jiang Ruzhen and drank several mouthfuls of pool water. In an instant, his whole body felt refreshed.
The bleeding from the head wound has stopped, and the pain is gradually disappearing, replaced by a tingling, itchy feeling, like the sensation of new flesh growing back.
Li Hai's eyes widened as he stared at Jiang Ruzhen in astonishment.
Jiang Ruzhen felt Li Hai's burning gaze even with her eyes closed, so she waved her hand.
"Don't ask me anything, I won't say a word."
Li Hai opened his mouth, but swallowed the question he wanted to ask.
He turned around and, together with the six uninjured soldiers, carried the seriously wounded into the pool one by one.
As they fed water to the lightly wounded soldiers, the space became lively, filled with exclamations and questions.
Jiang Ruzhen soaked her head for a while and felt much better.
He then washed his face and got up to go to the villa to change his clothes.
When she came out, Li Hai was waiting for her at the door.
"Comrade Jiang, how do we get out? Zhang Fugui is the only one on the outside position right now, and I'm worried about him."
Jiang Ruzhen nodded; she had also thought of this problem. "Gather all the personnel who can participate in the battle here with me."
"good."
Li Hai turned around and called to the soldiers who had already rested. Except for the fifteen seriously wounded, all the remaining soldiers were to assemble.
"Let's go, let's go out and get revenge."
At Jiang Ruzhen's command, the scenery before everyone's eyes changed again, and when they opened their eyes again, they were back on Hill 602.
