Chapter Twenty-Eight: Alone

After pulling for a long time, they still couldn't get the book over.

Yi Chenli held down the notebook, preventing An Yuan'er from making cheat sheets.

An Yuan'er said softly, "Yi Chenli, if you don't let me copy some, the Grand Tutor will criticize me for not doing my homework well again later."

Yi Chenli didn't move, but casually looked up, his long eyelashes obscuring the emotions churning in his eyes. He said somewhat irritably, "Roundball, what does it have to do with me that you're being criticized?"

An Yuan'er had never experienced a broken leg, so she wasn't able to perceive the change in Yi Chenli's thoughts so keenly.

She looked at Yi Chenli with a blank expression, her eyes filled with confusion.

It wasn't like this before.

She asked timidly, "Yi Chenli, are you feeling unwell?"

"No." Yi Chen looked away, not intending to look at those deceptive eyes again.

For the entire morning, Yi Chenli did not say a single word to An Yuan'er.

An Yuan'er hadn't done her homework, and as expected, she got a scolding.

Yi Chenli watched her being criticized, his face showing only indifference. His sharply defined profile was exceptionally handsome, yet it gave off a sense of distance.

Seeing An Yuan'er's unusually dejected state after being criticized, Yi Chenli said somewhat maliciously, "Are you blaming me for not helping you? Actually, I did it on purpose."

Even though Yi Chenli is more mature than his peers, he is still just a child. Some of his emotions, even if he tries to hide them, will sometimes be out of control.

He had a broken leg and was ostracized by his family. He was naturally sensitive and withdrawn, and there were some feelings he would rather never have had than experience the pain of losing them. An Yuan'er fearlessly rushed into his safe zone, slowly disrupting this balance.

Yi Chenli wanted to pull back from the brink before things got completely out of control.

An Yuan'er's eyes were still a little red, but she stubbornly raised her head and forced a smile.

"It's my own fault. If I had done my homework beforehand, this wouldn't have happened."

Even though he bullied her like this, the little girl didn't harbor any resentment.

Yi Chenli felt irritated. He had clearly bullied someone, but he wasn't happy at all.

"Fool!"

He grumbled and cursed, and this time he really ignored An Yuan'er.

That night, Yi Chenli had a dream.

In his dream, his legs were healed. He could walk on the road like an ordinary person. He could also practice horseback riding and archery, and play football and polo like other boys his age.

His mother also came back to life, and his father did not abandon him. He was still the most outstanding sixth prince in Shengjing, surrounded by countless people.

But after waking up, all that remains is a sense of bewilderment and loss.

A pitch-black night, an empty room, and legs that have lost all feeling.

He laughed desolately; the emptiness and loneliness after waking from the dream were more unbearable than he had imagined.

The greatest tragedy for a person is to dream dreams that will never come true.

Dreams end, and Yi Chenli realized with a clear mind that Yuan Gun Gun was just like a dream he had.

This girl will eventually find something she likes more.

Her feelings for him might be pity, or perhaps just childish curiosity; whatever it was, it was something Yi Chenli couldn't afford.

Rather than doing that, it's better not to dream at all.

Yi Chenli suppressed his inner turmoil and made a decision.

*

The next morning, before everyone else arrived, Yi Chenli went to see the Grand Tutor.

The Grand Tutor looked at the young and intelligent prince with a hint of regret in his eyes.

"Is the Sixth Prince really sure he wants to sit alone?"
