He Xue stayed by the Imperial Noble Consort's side and asked, "Aunt, have you been here before?"
"No!" The Imperial Noble Consort shook her head. "This is my first time here!"
He Xue looked at Kangxi, who was clearly uneasy. She wondered if he would be able to meet Shunzhi smoothly.
The door opened again soon, and an old monk followed behind the young monk.
When the old monk saw Emperor Kangxi, he put his palms together and said, "Amitabha, benefactor, please go back! Xingchi will not see you!"
"Master, could you please ask Master Xingchi for help?" Kangxi asked, his tone pleading.
“Benefactor, Xingchi is already a Buddhist monk. You are only putting him in a difficult position!” the old monk said.
“Master, you only thought about making things difficult for Master Xingchi, but aren’t you making things difficult for my uncle now?” He Xue stepped forward and said.
“You know perfectly well why we’ve come here. You should persuade Master Xingchi to see my uncle.”
Do you know how long it takes to prepare for my uncle's visit?
Monks are supposed to be compassionate, right? You should know about my uncle's relationship with Master Xingchi. Can you really bear to see my uncle return disappointed every time?
"Amitabha!" the old monk chanted.
"Master, I really envy you monks. Whenever you have nothing to say, you only need to say 'Amitabha Buddha,' and not only will people not notice that you've been rendered speechless, but it will also give people a sense of profound mystery!" He Xue said innocently.
The old monk's expression cracked slightly; he felt extremely embarrassed, yet he couldn't say "Amitabha!"
Emperor Kangxi felt very pleased to see the old monk's discomfiture, but he still said aloud, "Master, please forgive me. The child is ignorant!"
The old monk was speechless. Kangxi was clearly lying through his teeth. Whose child could talk so much? He was rendered speechless by the rebuttal.
“It’s alright! It’s alright!” the old monk said.
"Master, people like to help others achieve their goals. Why don't you let my uncle meet Master Xingchi?"
Putting aside their identities, they are just a son who wants to see his father and a father who is hiding from his son. Filial piety is the most important virtue. Even if you are a monk, you can't stop my uncle from fulfilling his filial duty!
"I think what you should do is try your best to get the father and son to meet. Maybe if they meet, many problems will be solved!" Xue persuaded the old monk with all her might. She was determined to see Shunzhi today.
Kangxi was deeply moved as he watched Hexue argue for him. He felt that bringing Hexue along was indeed the right thing to do. There were some things that were inappropriate for him to say, but were perfectly fine for Hexue to say.
If it weren't for the fact that this is a sacred Buddhist site, he would have razed it to the ground long ago instead of wasting his time here.
He Xue didn't give the old monk a chance to speak at all, and continued, "Master, I know you are in a difficult position. How about this, you take us to Master Xingchi's courtyard, and whether Master Xingchi sees us or not is up to us."
You should know my uncle's identity. If he's in a good mood, he might inscribe a plaque for Qingliang Temple, and then the temple's incense offerings will surely flourish.
They might even donate some money to Qingliang Temple for incense and oil, or maybe even have a golden statue of the Bodhisattva made!
For a moment, the old monk was bewitched by He Xue, and he glanced at Kangxi.
Kangxi immediately said, "Master, rest assured, these are not problems!"
"Benefactor, please follow me!" the old monk said.
Emperor Kangxi never expected that a problem he hadn't been able to solve for years would be resolved by He Xue's unreasonable and meddling.
"You! You even managed to fool a master!" The Imperial Noble Consort said to He Xue, both amused and exasperated.
"I'm just stating the facts!" He Xue retorted.
"Thanks to you this time, otherwise we would have returned empty-handed again!" the prince said.
“Uncle, I’ve been a great help to you this time!” He Xue said to Kangxi.
"When you get back, just tell me what you need!" Kangxi said in a great mood.
"Thank you so much, Uncle!" He Xue said excitedly.
"Second Brother, I've discovered that money makes things so much easier! There's no problem that money can't solve!" He Xue whispered to the Crown Prince.
The Crown Prince looked at He Xue speechlessly, but upon closer examination, it seemed to make perfect sense.
The old monk led Kangxi and his companions through several courtyards until they arrived at a small courtyard on the far west side.
“Benefactors, this is Master Xingchi’s courtyard. Please make yourselves at home! This is all the help I can offer!” the old monk said.
"Thank you for your trouble, Master!" the Imperial Noble Consort said to the old monk.
At this moment, Kangxi looked completely excited as he stared at the tightly closed door. Through the door and window, he could see a blurry figure.
Seeing this, the old monk wisely left.
"Father, Xuan Ye requests an audience!" Kangxi said to the figure inside the room.
The figure inside the room stirred. "Please leave, benefactor. There is no father here, only the monk Xingchi!"
"Uncle, why don't we just break down the door and go in?" He Xue felt that such a simple thing didn't need to be made so complicated.
“Father, I think Xue is right!” the prince said.
Kangxi looked at the Imperial Noble Consort, who nodded.
Seeing this, Emperor Kangxi agreed. The question was, who would break down the door?
