Chapter 008 I'll Slap You in the Face (2/2)

"Mom, the research institute has been communicating with the family compound recently, and the director has given me half a day off."

Qin Nian finally spoke up.

Upon hearing this, Yang Yufen met Qin Nian's gaze.

"Is it about me?"

After Yang Yufen finished speaking, she began to think back on what she had done that could have affected her daughter-in-law's job.

"Mom doesn't know if there's anything I can't do at your research institute, or maybe I made a mistake by accident. Mom will go to your director to apologize and ask for the punishment."

Yang Yufen thought for a moment and then spoke. She couldn't think of anything, but since it was related to her, she would just go and admit her mistake.

Qin Nian shook her head upon hearing this.

"It's my fault, Mom. From now on, you can leave the housework to me when I come back. I'll give you another fifty yuan for household expenses."

Qin Nian still didn't want to disrupt the current peace, so she thought about using money to calm her mother-in-law down, and that everything would be fine once Shen Xianjun returned.

Upon hearing this, Yang Yufen frowned. Seeing that her daughter-in-law seemed unwilling to talk, Yang Yufen turned around and left.

Qin Nian was feeling really bad, so she didn't chase after him.

Yang Yufen originally wanted to go to the research institute, but after thinking about it, she went to the staff quarters in the family compound.

I stood near the tenement building for a while, listening to a group of people chatting. Gradually, I heard what I wanted to hear. Just as I was about to go up and ask, I saw a familiar face and stopped in my tracks.

When Yi Mengling heard that Qin Nian had been given a leave of absence, she was overjoyed. Her group, Group 3, hadn't been busy lately, and upon hearing this news, Yi Mengling decided to stir things up again, so she went back to the dormitory building.

"Hey everyone, stop spreading it. Comrade Qin Nian has been suspended from work. It's all my fault. If I hadn't accidentally said the wrong thing, Comrade Qin Nian wouldn't have..."

"What? Work has really stopped?"

Yi Mengling nodded, lowered her head with great guilt, and looked down at her little leather shoes. Although they had been cleaned, she still held a grudge.

Just as Sister Li was about to continue gathering information, she felt someone tug at her, and she stepped back. Before she could say anything, she heard a snap.

"It's you, you blabbermouth! I knew you were a troublemaker the first time I saw you. I'll teach you to talk nonsense! I'll teach you to talk nonsense! You have a foul mouth, huh? You can't control your mouth, can you? I'll teach you a lesson."

Yang Yufen slapped Yi Mengling several times and grabbed her hair with one hand.

Unlike Qin Nian, who didn't keep her hair long for work convenience, Yi Mengling loved beauty and took great care of her long hair.

He was held in Yang Yufen's hand so tightly that he couldn't struggle at all.

"Who are you? How dare you hit people like that!"

Sister-in-law Li realized what was happening and immediately shouted.

This shout brought the crowd to their senses, and they tried to break up the fight.

"I am Qin Nian's mother-in-law! No wonder our Nian Nian, who was so busy, suddenly came home with red eyes and wouldn't say anything no matter how we asked. It turns out someone was gossiping about her."

Yang Yufen flung Yi Mengling aside and coldly swept her gaze around.

“My son found me a good daughter-in-law. Because of his mission, we couldn’t have a wedding. I came here specifically to see her. Niannian was worried that I would be uneasy going back alone, so she asked me to stay and wait for my son to come back from his mission. She is busy with her work and contributing to the country. Although I am an old woman and I don’t know many words, I know I shouldn’t be a burden.”

“I don’t know how to do anything else, so I just tidy up the house. Niannian gave me fifty yuan and various receipts and meal tickets, telling me not to work hard, but how could I bear to spend the money? Why not cook something for myself?”

There were many others present who were in the same situation as Yang Yufen. They didn't want to eat in the cafeteria either. Although it was convenient, it was much cheaper to cook for themselves.

"This gossipy woman sneaked into my house without a sound. I thought she was a thief. After I caught her, she kept calling me her nanny and asking how much I paid a month. Does she think I don't know what she's up to?"
