"Why did you order so much food today?"
Professor Wen spoke in a gentle voice.
"This is for my mother-in-law. There are limited meat coupons each month, but we can buy meat and vegetables in our canteen with meal coupons instead of meat coupons, so I brought one for my mother-in-law."
Qin Nian told the truth.
"That's good. Your teacher's wife knew you couldn't be an unfilial child."
After Professor Wen said that, Qin Nian finally realized that something was wrong.
“There have been a lot of rumors about you and your mother-in-law in the family compound lately. They say that you have your mother-in-law do your laundry and cook for you, and someone reported it to the higher authorities, so I thought I'd come and ask you about it.”
Professor Wen's words made Qin Nian pause in her chopsticks, and then slowly put them down.
Professor Wen's heart skipped a beat when he saw this.
“Madam, my mother-in-law does cook and do laundry for me every day after she came, but I didn’t ask her to do it.”
Qin Nian's expression was not good. Outsiders would not normally know about such a thing, but the fact that it had alarmed his master's wife to come looking for him meant that the matter had spread widely.
But how would anyone outside know unless the mother-in-law herself told her?
Qin Nian stared blankly at the meat and vegetables she had packed.
After returning to the lab with her lunchbox, Qin Nian was called over by her advisor again.
“Niannian, if you can’t settle things properly with your mother-in-law, it will have a big impact on you. I’m giving you half a day off. You’ve worked hard these past few days. I’ll have Xiaolin cover for you this afternoon.”
This was his student and a friend's entrustment, so Dean Hu naturally believed that Qin Nian wouldn't do anything foolish. However, if this matter continued to develop, it would definitely affect the research. In that case, Qin Nian would have to be moved to a less important position, which would be very disadvantageous for Qin Nian.
"I understand. I'm sorry to have worried you, teacher."
Qin Nian did not refuse the half-day leave.
Carrying a food box, I rode my bicycle back to the courtyard. The gate was open, and the courtyard had changed a lot. There was a red brick path leading directly to the main house corridor. To the left was a vegetable garden, and there was a chicken coop in the corner with three hens that my mother-in-law had brought.
There was a shed that had been erected on the right at some point, and it was filled with firewood. There was also a half-built wall in the corner, the purpose of which was unknown.
"Niannian, why are you back at this time?"
Yang Yufen was halfway through building the toilet when she suddenly needed to use the restroom, so she went to the toilet.
Qin Nian wanted to call out "Mom" as usual, but the words stuck in her throat and she couldn't say them.
Yang Yufen immediately noticed something was wrong; her daughter-in-law's eyes were red.
"What's wrong? Did you feel wronged? Or is there something wrong at work?"
Yang Yufen was a little anxious.
Qin Nian opened her mouth, but couldn't say anything; tears welled up in her eyes first, completely uncontrollable.
For some reason, Yang Yufen suddenly thought of her worthless son.
"Did something happen to the current troops during their mission? It's alright, they're tough guys, nothing serious will happen to them."
Upon hearing this, Qin Nian stopped crying for a moment, then shook her head, and then remembered that she could speak.
"no."
"What happened?"
So it wasn't that unfilial son after all. Yang Yufen was even more puzzled.
