"She fell and hurt herself. Her bones weren't very strong to begin with, so at first she didn't think much of it and just gritted her teeth and endured it, thinking that applying some medicated wine would be enough. But after two days, she was in so much pain at night that she couldn't get up, and that's when she realized it was serious."
"Okay, let's go take a look together tomorrow. I was wondering why the gate was closed every time I passed by."
Yang Yufen nodded.
"How many children does she have?"
“The children are not young anymore. The older ones are looking after the younger ones. The youngest one has been sent to his maternal grandparents’ house. I heard he was seriously injured and may have to stay in bed for the rest of his life.”
Aunt Wang's expression also darkened. They were all about the same age, and she couldn't help but think about what would happen if she also fell ill and couldn't get up.
"It doesn't have to be lying down. Even if they can move around with crutches or in a wheelchair, that's fine. Which hospital did you take them to?"
Yang Yufen didn't think it was that pessimistic, after all, Er Shun and his father were so seriously injured but they can now walk normally.
"At the Third People's Hospital."
When Qin Nian and Shen Xianjun returned, the children hadn't come home from school yet. A delicious aroma wafted from the kitchen, and Qin Nian headed straight for it.
"Mom, we're back."
"You're back. I've made some mung bean soup and put it in the main room. Go and have some."
Yang Yufen was rolling out dough.
"Mom, Niannian has something to tell you. I'll take care of it."
Shen Xianjun washed his hands and stepped forward to take over the work from Yang Yufen.
Upon hearing this, Yang Yufen wiped her hands and then followed Qin Nian out of the kitchen.
"Mom, this is for you."
Qin Nian took out the property ownership certificate.
"Why would I give it to you? You can just keep the property certificate for the house."
Yang Yufen smiled when she saw the property certificate, wondering what had happened.
"Mom, open it and take a look."
Qin Nian insisted, and Yang Yufen reached out and took it, then opened it. Since her daughter-in-law had asked her to look at it, she was bound to take a closer look.
"This, this, this sounds so much like my name!"
When Yang Yufen saw the name of the householder, she touched it with her hand; it had three characters.
"Yes, Mom, this is my way of showing my filial piety. My teacher's wife said you like carpentry. This courtyard is big, and although there aren't as many houses as in the old courtyard, it's spacious. This place is in the alley next to the new middle school, so it will be convenient for the children when they go to junior high school. It's also not far from the family compound."
Qin Nian explained carefully.
"I'm already this old, what would I need a house for? Carpentry work leaves sawdust everywhere."
As Yang Yufen spoke, her hand caressed her own name on the property deed.
“Mom, if you can buy it for me, why can’t I buy it for you? You’re not even sixty yet. In a few years, when our two children are in junior high school, we’ll be so busy, and the children will definitely need your care. You also said that money is a person’s foundation.”
"Oh, Mom, you're really living the good life! House prices are so high these days. Here's the money for you, Mom will accept this filial piety."
Yang Yufen held back her tears. When she got married, she was the one who repaired and rebuilt the old, dilapidated house brick by brick. It wasn't even registered in her name. But since Shen Xianjun was her only child, it was considered a gift to her child. That's how she got through her life.
"Mom, I told you I'd be filial, so please accept this. Tomorrow I'll take you to see the house. It's just that the landlord hasn't completely moved out yet; it will take another two days to vacate it all."
"No rush, no rush. I've already made an appointment with your Aunt Wang to visit your Aunt Liu tomorrow. Just take Mom with you when you have time."
"Okay, Mom, please keep this safe. I'll go pick up the child."
Qin Nian was genuinely afraid that her mother-in-law would give her money, so she quickly made up an excuse and ran away.
Yang Yufen looked at the property certificate in her hand, wiped away a tear, and thought that having a son was still useful, as he had helped her find a good daughter-in-law.
