"Mom, how is my wife? Is she alright?"
When Shen Xianjun saw his mother go into the kitchen, he couldn't help but speak up.
"Hmph, my daughter-in-law is naturally a good person. If you dare to do anything to betray Niannian, watch out for your legs. It's not that Niannian became good after marrying you; she's a good person to begin with. She's smart and filial, and she'd be good no matter who she marries. Stop acting innocent after you've gotten such a good deal."
Yang Yufen filled a ladle with water to wash her face.
"Mom, how can you look down on your own son like that? Your son is just as good as me."
"Hmph, even dog shit doesn't realize how smelly it is. Don't you know how bad it is? You're in the army, away from home all year round. How much suffering does your wife have to endure all by herself?"
I'm afraid you'll cause me trouble if I come, so you don't want me to come. But if I really don't come, how much suffering will your wife endure alone while pregnant? Will the first and second babies be able to be born smoothly?
How can those gossiping people criticize Niannian behind her back? She has so many talents that could benefit so many people, yet she has to lose her brilliance because of you.
You have your responsibilities as a soldier, but as your wife, someone with no blood relation and no protection from you, why should she sacrifice so much? Have you considered the possibility of your family being destroyed and your current happiness?
Yang Yufen launched into a tirade, saying that she was genuinely afraid this was all just a pipe dream, and that she would feel uneasy whenever she had free time.
Shen Xianjun lowered his head and remained silent. He was neither a good son nor a good husband, and these were many things he had never thought about.
"Just focus on cooking."
Yang Yufen took a deep breath, placed the water ladle in the vat, and walked out.
When Qin Nian returned with her child, she didn't see her mother-in-law in the kitchen. Instead, she saw her husband quietly cooking, and he seemed to be in a bad mood.
"What's wrong?"
The children are doing their homework in the main room.
"I'm sorry, I haven't fulfilled my responsibilities as a husband, and I've caused you to suffer so much injustice and pain."
Qin Nian was taken aback by Shen Xianjun's apology.
"Actually, it's alright. Mom has helped me a lot since she came. She's always protected me, so I haven't suffered much. I understand your duties and responsibilities, and I'm not..."
Qin Nian suddenly bit her lip. If her mother-in-law hadn't come, she would have missed so much.
Inside the main room, the children chattered innocently, poking each other and glancing at each other, their hands and mouths never stopping.
"Dad, Mom, when can we eat? I'm starving!"
Li Wu rushed in, breaking the silence in the kitchen.
"Have you all finished your homework yet? If you're done, clean up your desks and go call your grandma for dinner."
Shen Xianjun quickly responded.
"Yay! Quick, dinner's ready! I'll go call Grandma!"
Li Wu cheered and ran off. Shen Xianjun quickly ladled the vegetables out of the pot, added a ladle of water, and waited to cook the noodles.
Yang Yufen brought back the newly collected eggs. She would see how many she could collect the next morning and then take them to see Sister Liu.
Yang Yufen knew the orthopedics department well, so she asked a nurse where the ward was and found it in no time.
In the ward, Aunt Liu turned to the side, trying to reach something. There were no other patients in the room.
"Slow down, slow down."
Yang Yufen saw that someone almost fell off the bed and quickly went to help.
"Why are you here?"
"Of course I came to see you. Would you like some water?"
Yang Yufen carefully helped the person up, then reached out to pick up the thermos, poured water, and handed it to Aunt Liu.
After drinking a few sips of water, Aunt Liu felt a little better.
"I don't know what's wrong with the caregiver today, she hasn't come yet. I saw how busy the nurses were, so I thought I'd do it myself. It didn't seem like it was that far, but I almost fell off the bed."
Aunt Liu smiled, but the bitterness in her eyes was impossible to hide.
Have you eaten breakfast?
