The group then returned to Lin Shanhai's home together.
Just as Zhao Shufang finished preparing the noodles, she saw an unfamiliar face.
She asked Lin Chaosheng in surprise, "Who is this...?"
“This is Su Hang’s older brother, Su Ning,” Lin Chaosheng replied.
Then he turned to Su Ning and introduced them one by one, "This is my mother, this is my wife Liang Mei, this is my wife's younger sister Liang Fu, this is my younger brother Lin Shansheng, and this is my adopted younger brother Wei He."
Su Ning was completely bewildered. Looking at the happy family, he felt a pang of envy.
"Your family is so big, you're so lucky," Su Ning couldn't help but exclaim.
Lin Chaosheng chuckled, "Don't worry! From now on, you'll be family too."
Su Ning's nose tingled, and she quickly nodded in agreement, afraid that her tears would fall in public.
Lin Chaosheng quickly invited Su Ning to sit down and rest, and then helped Su Hang into her room to rest.
Zhao Shufang and the others quickly started preparing the meal.
Soon, the fragrant aroma of mung bean porridge wafted from the large iron pot. Su Ning couldn't help but exclaim, "What are you making? It smells so good!"
Liang Mei filled a bowl and handed it to Su Ning, saying, "Mom, we're making some mung bean porridge to cool you down today. Have a bowl too."
Su Ning felt embarrassed to eat at someone else's house, especially since it was the family that had saved his sister's life, so he quickly waved his hand and refused.
"Since you've accepted me as your younger brother, then don't stand on ceremony!" Lin Chaosheng said hastily when he saw Su Ning refuse. "Stay at our house for dinner later."
Su Ning's stomach had actually been growling for a while, but he still couldn't bring himself to do it.
"If you don't stay for dinner, it means you don't treat me like a younger brother!" Lin Chaosheng said harshly when he saw that he was still unwilling.
Su Ning scratched his head and said, "No! I'll eat it, I'll eat it!"
Then he took the mung bean porridge and drank it in big gulps.
He savored the delicious mung bean porridge and felt at ease knowing that his younger sister could live in such an environment.
Zhao Shufang had already started cooking cold noodles and scooped the cooked noodles into the freshly drawn well water.
The three older women helped arrange the bowls one by one, then added different colored vegetables and poured on the sauce that Zhao Shufang had just made.
Su Ning watched from the side and couldn't help but swallow hard.
Seeing this, Liang Fu handed him a bowl of noodles, saying, "Here you go, mix it up before you eat."
Suning gratefully accepted the noodles, mixed them well, and began to eat them heartily.
The noodles, soaked in well water, were icy cold yet chewy. Paired with sauce and vegetables, the sour, spicy, and fragrant flavors burst in your mouth, whetting your appetite.
Lin Chaosheng and the others watched, their mouths watering. They quickly picked up a bowl each, speechless with delight at how delicious it was.
The workers gradually returned, each taking a bowl of mung bean porridge and dandelion water to drink before heading home.
After dinner, everyone divided the tasks and started cleaning up, with Su Ningye helping out.
For the first time since his parents passed away, he felt like he had a home.
He hadn't experienced days like this, where the whole family cooked together, washed the dishes, and chatted in the yard, for a very long time.
During his conversation with Suning, Lin Chaosheng learned that their parents had died due to famine.
To save Suzhou and Suning, their parents would go out before dawn every day to find food, and give it all to the two of them, while they themselves would drink cold water and eat tree bark.
Even the strongest person cannot endure such days, and their parents, due to long-term exhaustion and hunger, passed away one after another.
However, Su Ning is also a capable person. He started from the bottom and worked his way up to become the head of the purchasing department of the supply and marketing cooperative.
That's why he kept such a close eye on Su Ning; he really didn't want to lose his last remaining family member in the world.
After hearing his story, everyone fell silent, because they knew they had almost ended up like the Su family.
Seeing that everyone was in low spirits, Lin Chaosheng quickly joked, "Alright, from now on, we'll all live well as a big family. Not one more, not one less!"
Everyone chuckled after hearing that.
Zhao Shufang pretended to scold, "Look at my eldest son, all he does all day is talk nonsense!"
Soon, it got dark, and Su Ning said goodbye to the Lin family with peace of mind, then went home.
After saying goodbye to Suning, the Lin family members quickly washed up and went back to their rooms to sleep.
The next morning, Lin Chaosheng still prepared to go fishing in the sea as usual.
After having breakfast, he was packing his fishing gear when he suddenly had the urge to check his luck for the day.
"Fifty!" Lin Chaosheng was startled.
This was the luckiest he had ever experienced, and he felt he should go up the mountain today to see if there was anything good waiting for him.
So he handed the fishing gear to Lin Shansheng, who was still yawning, and instructed him and Lin Shanhai: "Dad, Shansheng, you two go fishing today. I'm going to try my luck on the mountain."
Then he handed the order to Lin Shanhai, saying, "These are the goods we need for today. You two, hurry back after you've finished loading them. Don't let a small thing cause a big loss. Be sure to be careful!"
Just as Lin Chaosheng was about to leave, he added to Lin Shansheng's instructions: "Remember to keep following that jellyfish and mackerel today, don't forget!"
Lin Shansheng yawned and nodded in agreement.
After giving his instructions, Lin Chaosheng prepared to go up the mountain.
But just as he reached the foot of the mountain, he suddenly wondered if he had encountered a wild beast today.
If it really is a wild animal, he might be in danger going up the mountain alone.
After much deliberation, he finally made up his mind—
He was going to borrow a homemade gun from the village chief.
"Village Chief Lü, are you there? This is Lin Chaosheng, I have something urgent to discuss with you!" Lin Chaosheng knocked on the door of the village chief's house and shouted.
Village Chief Lü came out and opened the door upon hearing the noise. "What's wrong, Chaosheng? What brings you here so early in the morning?"
“Well, village chief, I’m planning to borrow something from you,” Lin Chaosheng replied.
Seeing that there were many people outside, Village Chief Lü pulled Lin Chaosheng into the house, saying, "Come in and talk to me."
Lin Chaosheng cleared his throat and said, "I'd like to borrow a homemade gun from you."
"What?" Village Chief Lü was shocked.
Then he lowered his voice and asked, "What do you need it for?"
Lin Chaosheng realized that the village chief had misunderstood him, so he quickly explained, "Village chief, please don't misunderstand, I went up the mountain to hunt."
Upon hearing this, Village Chief Lü immediately breathed a sigh of relief, "Can't you finish what you were saying, kid? You really scared me to death!"
Then she changed the subject: "No, we can't lend it out, that's against the rules."
Knowing this would happen, Lin Chaosheng quickly offered his terms: "Village chief, I'm sure I'll bring back a lot of game this time. If you're willing to lend me your gun, I'll share most of the prey with the villagers."
