Chapter Nineteen Acupoints

Director Liang is not only the director of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Department of the hospital, but also a professor of Traditional Chinese Pharmacy at the university.

Li Chu shook his head repeatedly upon hearing this, "Forget it, I'm not cut out to be a teacher, I'm too young." Becoming a university teacher these days is really not a good idea. It might be okay for the next two years, but when the big era arrives, teachers, especially university teachers, well… he couldn't possibly teach for two years and then quit, could he?

Director Liang pointed at Li Chu with exasperation: "You're just lazy. You're like an abacus bead, only moving when you push it."

Li Chu sat there without saying a word, just chuckling.

"Alright, get lost. I get annoyed just looking at you."

"Alright, I'm off then. Remember my dorm room!" With that, he walked out of the director's office.

Back in her office, Ding Qiunan was sitting there, intently reviewing the secretary's notes.

Ding Qiunan looked up when she heard the noise and saw that Li Chu had returned. "Dr. Li, you're back."

"Comrade Ding Qiunan, were there many people this morning?"

"Two patients came this morning, and I told them to go to the two examination rooms next door." Ding Qiunan thought for a moment and then said, "Oh, there was another person who came to see you, but he didn't say what he wanted to do. He was about to leave when he saw that you weren't there, so I told him to come back this afternoon."

Who is it? Li Chu didn't think much of it. If they really had something to ask him, they would come back later.

There was water in the teacup on the table that I had poured myself that morning, and I drank more than half of it.

Ding Qiunan looked at Li Chu, hesitant for a moment before cautiously saying, "Dr. Li, can I ask you something?"

Li Chu raised his eyes and glanced at Ding Qiunan: "What is it? Tell me."

"Um...it was yesterday, um...your yesterday..." He stammered for a long time before finally getting to the point.

Li Chu was getting anxious listening to her and interrupted her, "Just tell me what happened."

Ding Qiunan finally mustered her courage, took a deep breath, and said, "Could you teach me the acupuncture hemostasis method you used yesterday?" She finished speaking in one breath.

Li Chu smiled after hearing this; they were all eyeing his skills. He said to Ding Qiunan, "You can learn if you want. But do you know all the acupoints on the human body? Which acupoints can be needled, and which cannot, otherwise it could be life-threatening? Do you understand all of this?"

Ding Qiunan listened in a daze: "I can remember some of them, probably more than 100 acupoints."

"That won't do. There's been no consensus on how many acupoints there are in the human body for thousands of years. As far as I know, there are more than 700, and we in traditional Chinese medicine can use more than 400 of them. Among them, there are quite a few that can be fatal. We must be able to distinguish them clearly, otherwise what if you prick the wrong place?"

"Dr. Li, do you have any good methods to memorize these acupoints? Many of the diagrams in this book are not clear."

Unfortunately, this is due to limitations in printing technology, as well as the paper itself. Many types of paper can't be written on with a pen anymore; it just prints over. These are technical problems that Li Chu can't solve.

Thinking of this, Li Chu couldn't help but think of those time-traveling predecessors. Why did those people know everything after they traveled back in time? Those who studied humanities could smelt steel, those who studied science could remember the dates of major and minor events in history, even city dwellers could farm, and some could even generate electricity from scratch and build trains.

Why is it that he doesn't know anything about this? If he knew all that stuff, he'd be running off to the Northwest right now to grope Miss Qiu, how awesome would that be?

Seeing that Li Chu didn't react for a while, Ding Qiunan called out, "Dr. Li, what are you thinking about?"

Li Chu snapped out of his thoughts. "Oh, I was thinking about how to help you quickly memorize the acupoints. How about this, I'll draw you an acupoint distribution map later."

"Really, thank you so much, Dr. Li." Ding Qiunan's eyes lit up.

"Don't be so polite. You've come here for further studies, so you should learn something. We can't let you feel like you've come for nothing."

No sooner had he finished speaking than Director Liang walked in from outside. "What are you two talking about? What do you mean, 'came for nothing'?"

"Oh, Dr. Li said he'd teach me some techniques, so this training wouldn't be a waste of my time," Ding Qiunan said.

"Yes, you should be taught well, and you should also study hard, Xiao Ding." Director Liang nodded.

"I understand, Director Liang. I will study hard."

Director Liang took a key out of his pocket and threw it on Li Chu's desk. "Here you go. I've got you a dorm room. It's the one on the far east side. Go and get ready yourself." He then walked out. "I'm leaving now. I have a class at school."

"Thank you so much, Director!"

"Dr. Li, what do you need a dormitory for?" Ding Qiunan asked curiously.

“I’m planning to renovate my house a lot, and it’ll be uninhabitable, so I’ll be staying here for a month.”

"Then I'll help you tidy up after get off work this afternoon."

"No need today. I'll ask you for help if I need it when I move in another day."

Shortly after starting work in the afternoon, a middle-aged man came looking for Li Chu.

"Hello Dr. Li, I was referred by Director Li. My surname is Wang, my name is Wang Chong'an, and I work at the post office near Jianguomen." After saying that, he handed Li Chu a registration slip.

Li Chu stood up and shook hands with the other person. "Hello, Comrade Wang, please have a seat. You said my sister introduced you?"

Wang Chong'an paused for a moment before explaining, "Oh, it's Director Li from the steel mill."

"Oh, you've come here for...?" Li Chu looked at the man's face; he didn't seem to be sick.

“Uh…” He glanced at Ding Qiunan but didn’t say anything.

Upon seeing this, Ding Qiunan said, "Dr. Li, you go ahead with your work. I'll go to the reading room to get a new book." With that, she left and closed the door behind her.

Li Chu knew exactly what he wanted to know, so he placed the pulse pillow in front of him and said directly, "Comrade Wang, please extend your left hand, let me take your pulse first."

After taking his pulse, I had him lie down on a bed in the corner of the office and then drew the curtains. This bed was for patients who needed acupuncture.
