Chapter Seventy-Two Rescue

Just now, Officer Wang's shouts brought out almost everyone from the front yard, and even a few people from the middle yard came out to see what had happened.

Li Chu knew the hospital matter was urgent, and he didn't have the energy to say anything to them. He pushed his bicycle and went out.

After he left, the people in the courtyard gathered together and discussed what had happened.

The hospital was brightly lit, with high-powered spotlights from somewhere illuminating the entire courtyard as if it were daytime. Several cars were parked along the edge of the courtyard. Li Chu knew something serious must have happened. Without daring to waste any time, he first went to his office to grab his white cap and white coat, then hurried towards the surgery department.

As he was walking, he noticed that several more people were running in from the hospital gate, pulling a cart and shouting, "Doctor, is there a doctor? There's someone here who's dying."

Upon seeing this, Li Chu turned around and ran over: "I'm a doctor, stop and let me take a look."

The man pulling the cart saw a person in a white coat running over and quickly stopped. Li Chu ran to the cart and looked at the person lying on it. The person's chest was obviously sunken in, and he was spitting blood, or rather, blood foam, from his mouth, and breathing rapidly.

Seeing this, Li Chu hurriedly said, "Quick, help him unbutton his clothes and expose his chest." He then pulled out his acupuncture kit from his pocket and took out acupuncture needles. The men quickly unbuttoned the man's shirt, and Li Chu, without even bothering to sterilize the needles, quickly inserted several needles. Then he told the people pulling the cart, "Pull the cart with me, and be as gentle as possible." He then led the way to the surgical clinic.

Outside the surgical clinic, Vice President Zhang and several people who were clearly government officials were talking. Li Chu didn't approach them but went straight into the clinic. Inside, there were several injured people and several surgical doctors and nurses were busy. Not seeing Director He of the Department of Surgery, Li Chu went to another clinic and met Director He.

"Director He, there is another injured person outside. Could you send someone to take a look? I've given him a few acupuncture needles to temporarily stop the bleeding, but based on my observation, he should undergo surgery immediately."

Director He nodded and immediately assigned two people to check on the injured people on the cart outside.

Soon, one of the people who went out ran back and stood next to Director He, saying something. Director He then went out again with the doctor, and Li Chu followed them out as well.

Director He stood in front of the injured person, looking somewhat hesitant. Li Chu had overheard the doctor's words earlier and knew what Director He was hesitating about. After thinking for a moment, he walked over to Director He and said, "Director He, I don't understand Western medicine, but I think that in this situation, we should prioritize saving lives before treating injuries. Only after saving lives can we talk about other things."

Upon hearing Li Chu's words, Director He's eyes visibly lit up, and he quickly made a decision.

This line came from a TV series Li Chu watched in his previous life, spoken by the director of an emergency center. Whether it was right or wrong, Li Chu couldn't tell, but in such an emergency, saving lives was the only priority before anything else could be considered.

After Director He finished arranging things for the injured person, he came over, patted Li Chu's arm, and said, "Xiao Li, thank you."

"Director He, I'm just glad you don't mind me being nosy." He then asked, "What exactly happened today?"

"Sigh, a building at the No. 1 thermal power plant suddenly collapsed for some unknown reason. According to the duty roster, more than twenty workers were buried underneath," Director He said with a heavy expression.

After hearing what he said, Li Chu's expression became much more serious. Based on what he had just seen, it was obvious that there were still wounded who had not been brought over, and that they had not yet been rescued.

Just then, a military truck drove in. Before it had even come to a complete stop, several soldiers jumped out and shouted, "Quick, someone come quick..."

Li Chu followed Director He and ran over. Several doctors and nurses also ran out of the consultation room. Vice President Zhang, who was standing there, and government officials also came over.

As soon as Li Chu approached the car, he heard screams coming from inside and smelled a strong stench of blood.

The side of the truck had been opened, and two soldiers jumped out of the truck bed. They turned around and lifted a plank from the bed, on which lay a wounded soldier. "Quickly check if there's any hope for him," one of the soldiers on the truck said, carefully handing the plank down.

Upon seeing the person lying on the wooden board, several doctors and nurses simultaneously turned away and began to vomit. Li Chu felt his stomach clench violently as well. The person's entire lower body was mangled and bloody, almost completely separated from the upper body at the abdomen, with the intestines, which should have been inside the abdominal cavity, piled up on the board.

When Director He saw this, he frowned deeply. He first waved his hand at the government officials, signaling them not to come over, and then walked to the wooden board to observe it. Li Chu followed closely behind, first placing his hand on the carotid artery in the neck to feel it, and then grabbing another hand to take a pulse.

Director He then looked up and beckoned the doctors and nurses who had finished vomiting to go and check on the other injured people.

Li Chu put down his hand, took out a needle and pricked the wounded more than a dozen times, then looked at Director He, said nothing, and went to see the other wounded.

Several more wounded were brought in later, and by the time all the wounded had been treated, it was already past midnight.

Li Chu was resting on the steps outside the surgical clinic; part of his white coat had been stained red.

There were 26 workers in the factory at the time. Seven of them died on the spot, and two of the remaining 19 died on the way there. Four of them could not be saved at the hospital. Behind these cold, hard numbers are countless precious lives.

The injured person whose lower body was crushed has been temporarily saved, but the outcome will depend on the success of the subsequent surgery.

However, Li Chu didn't know if doing this was the right thing to do. Even if the surgery was successful, the person's quality of life would be completely ruined for the rest of his life.

"Sigh..." Li Chu sat there thinking about what had just happened and sighed deeply.

"What are you thinking about?" A voice came from behind. Li Chu turned around and saw Dean Yang, Vice Dean Zhang, and Director He.

Li Chu stood up and greeted the leaders: "I wasn't thinking about anything, I'm just a little tired, I'll sit down and rest for a while."

"Li Chu did a great job today. His advice to Director He about prioritizing saving lives over treating injuries was very inspiring," Vice Dean Zhang praised Li Chu to Dean Yang.

"Yes, our hospital needs young doctors like Xiao Li right now—educated, qualified, and with superb medical skills. I hope Xiao Li will remain humble and continue to improve his medical skills." Dean Yang also affirmed Li Chu's achievements and put forward new requirements for him: "After listening to Vice Dean Zhang's words, I found that you, Xiao Li, have your own views on emergency treatment. That's great. Young people should be like that—daring to think and daring to take risks. Write down your thoughts and submit them to us for us to see."

Li Chu had no choice but to agree.

After chatting for a while, Vice Dean Zhang told Li Chu to go home and rest, and arranged for him to rest at home the next morning and come back to work in the afternoon.
