Chapter 302 Human Hearts

"You know them?" Old Mrs. Liang asked in surprise.

"Yeah, my dad said that looks like the dog that Xiao Chu keeps."

"Xiao Chu?"

"Mom, the Xiao Chu that Dad mentioned is Li Chu from their old hospital," the second son explained to his mother.

How did he know we moved here?

Both wives looked at their husbands, unaware of who Li Chu was.

"I can't explain it either. I'll ask my dad when he gets back."

Director Liang didn't mention what happened this morning when he came back, so neither of them dares to say anything now and can only pin the blame on him.

After Director Liang followed Xiao Hei out, they walked back to where they had been standing.

Li Chu saw Xiao Hei leading someone towards him from afar. After taking a closer look and confirming that it was Director Liang, and seeing that no one was following behind, he took the cart and its contents out of the warehouse.

Then he emerged from behind the green belt.

"Uncle Liang, it's me, Xiao Chu."

Hearing his voice, Director Liang finally breathed a sigh of relief.

"Xiao Chu, why are you here again? I'm not trying to be mean, but I have a lot on my plate right now, so don't drag me into this."

"It's alright, Uncle Liang, I'm keeping an eye on things. Didn't you see I always send Xiao Hei over to call you?"

As he spoke, Li Chu reached out and touched the little black dog sitting beside him, then took out a piece of pig liver from his pocket and fed it to the dog.

"Xiao Chu, tell me what you want. If you don't have anything to say, then leave quickly. You'd better not come here."

Li Chu ignored him, turned around to look around, and only after confirming that no one was around did he grab Director Liang's arm.

"Uncle Liang, come with me, I brought you some things."

"I don't want it anymore. You gave me a lot of money and tickets this morning, enough for us to use for a while." Director Liang tried to break free from Li Chu's hand but failed and was pulled behind the green belt.

Director Liang looked at the cart in front of him and the things piled on it, and didn't know what to say.

"Uncle Liang, I didn't bring anything good. I didn't dare to give you the white flour. This is two hundred catties of corn flour and some millet. This bag contains the braised pig's head meat I made myself. These are two packets of malted milk powder. Think about it, is there any way to bring it into the house without anyone seeing it?"

At this moment, Director Liang was overcome with emotion and tears streamed down his face. He didn't know how to express his feelings.

"Uncle Liang, we can't do this. Don't waste too much time. Let's quickly think of a way to get in."

Director Liang also understood that they couldn't waste time. If someone saw it and reported it, it would also harm Li Chu.

He raised his hand and wiped his face haphazardly with his sleeve.

"That's right over the wall of our house. If you throw it in from there, it'll be right behind my house. You can just open the window and take it in, and nobody can see it," Director Liang pointed with his arm.

"Let's go then. I'll pull the cart over there, and you lead the way."

They easily tossed everything from the car to the other side of the wall, but Li Chu had to climb over the wall to carefully throw the cornmeal over.

"Alright, Uncle Liang, go back and pack your things inside quickly. Make sure they're hidden well. Don't heat up the braised meat; just eat it cold, it won't taste good that way."

Director Liang nodded: "Xiao Chu, I won't thank you, you should go back now, I won't come here as often as possible."

"Uncle Liang, you must take care of yourself. This will all pass eventually."

After saying that, Li Chu pulled the cart and left, with Xiao Hei trotting ahead to lead the way.

Director Liang shook his head slightly, watched him walk away, and then turned back into the courtyard.

He went out empty-handed and came back empty-handed. Some people in the courtyard were looking out the window and saw him return like this, so they lost interest in watching him any longer.

Once inside, Grandma Liang handed her grandson to her second daughter-in-law and quickly looked her husband up and down.

"Are you alright, old man?"

"It's nothing, what could possibly happen?"

"Dad, is Li Chu looking for you?"

Director Liang didn't say anything, but plopped down on the stool and continued to think with his head down.

The other people in the room, seeing this, had no idea what had happened.

But seeing that her father didn't seem very happy, she didn't dare ask anything more.

The three children were put to bed early, but Director Liang wouldn't let the adults sleep. He wouldn't answer when asked, and he even told them to turn off all the lights.

The adults sat there in the dark.

Only after all the lights in the yard were turned off did Director Liang instruct his eldest son to draw the curtains, light candles, and then direct them to carry in the things that had just been thrown in through the back window, one by one.

The family of six adults, by the dim candlelight, stared at the pile of things on the ground, speechless for a long time.

In the months since the incident, he has witnessed the coldness and warmth of human relationships. Even Director Liang, who has seen all these things, is silent at this moment.

After a while, Director Liang said in a hoarse voice, "Alright, stop looking and hurry up and pack your things."

As he spoke, he took out the money and tickets that Li Chu had given him that morning, and had his two sons take them out as well.

Pointing to everything in front of him, he said to his wife, son, and daughter-in-law, "All of these were given by Xiao Chu. In such a dangerous situation, he was able to bring so many life-saving things. We should have a conscience. Whether I am still here or not, you must remember Xiao Chu's kindness."

After speaking, Director Liang looked up at his two sons, glancing back and forth between them.

"Dad, don't worry, I could never forget today, no matter what I forget."

"I'm a dad too."

"Dad, how could I forget that?"

"It's Dad, he saved my life!"

Even the two daughters-in-law have expressed their opinions one after another.

Director Liang felt deeply guilty towards his two daughters-in-law.

She and her two sons were sued by her youngest son, and both of her daughters have severed ties with her and her husband. Yet, the two daughters-in-law who married into the family have not uttered a single complaint.

You can only truly see a person's true nature when something bad happens!

Li Chu had already returned to the vicinity of his home with his cart. He returned the borrowed cart to the owner and slipped him a pack of cigarettes. They were neighbors from the same alley, and he might need the cart again someday.

When I got to my front door, before I even knocked, I heard the sound of a dog scratching at the door from inside.

Then he heard his wife's voice.

"Li Chu, is that you?"

It looks like the dog inside has already barked for me.

"Honey, open the door, I'm home."

"Why did it take so long? I was so worried! Come in quickly."

After going inside, Li Chu turned around and locked the door.

“The road is long, and the place he lives is on the edge of the city. When I got there, I couldn’t go in directly to find him, so I sent Xiao Hei in. He didn’t come out for a long time.”

As they entered the living room, Ding Qiunan helped her husband take off his coat and hang it on the clothes rack.
