Chapter Seventy-Four: Life

"By the way, Xiao Li, I came to tell you that Dr. Luo went to help Dr. Wang pack his things, and Dr. Wang's retirement application has been approved. Dr. Luo will move in tomorrow, and you'll have your own office from now on," Director Liang said to Li Chu.

Li Chu was a little confused after hearing this: "Dr. Wang retired? Which Dr. Wang?" There were two Dr. Wangs in their TCM department, and they were about the same age.

"It's Dr. Wang from the second consultation room next door."

"Oh, then I'll go take a look later." Li Chu nodded.

Director Liang waved his hand: "No need to go, Dr. Wang left at noon."

This Dr. Wang is a very old-fashioned doctor who almost never interacts with Li Chu and Luo Qicheng, the two young men. He stubbornly believes that young people haven't even grown up yet and don't know anything about traditional Chinese medicine.

He always talks about how things were when we were young, but Li Chu doesn't tolerate his behavior. If you don't like to talk to me, I'm too lazy to talk to you either.

"Then why did you have Dr. Luo move there? Dr. Zhang can manage on his own in the second consultation room." Li Chu asked.

“You know Dr. Zhang’s health condition, and besides, he and another Dr. Wang are both retiring at the end of this year. So let’s have Xiao Luo move over ahead of schedule.” Director Liang was somewhat downcast.

Starting from the Republican era, due to the impact of foreign culture, many people believed that traditional Chinese medicine was inferior to Western medicine. In addition, the government at the time vigorously promoted Western medicine, which brought the development of traditional Chinese medicine to a standstill.

Li Chu didn't know how to comfort Director Liang, because in the coming decades, due to the influence of the inheritance of traditional Chinese medicine, there will be fewer and fewer good TCM doctors.

Director Liang sighed, "Sigh, in the past few years, our TCM department has only had one person join us, and three people are retiring this year alone. There are fewer and fewer people. Next year, the first batch of TCM undergraduate students will graduate, and I don't know if they will be assigned to our hospital."

"It's a pity that our medical school doesn't have a Traditional Chinese Medicine major, otherwise you wouldn't have to worry," Li Chu said after hearing Director Liang's words.

Director Liang shook his head without saying a word, and walked out with his hands behind his back.

Li Chu walked to his desk, sat down, picked up his teacup, took a sip of water, and stared blankly at the steam rising from it.

At this moment, Dr. Luo walked in, startling Li Chu from his reverie. Dr. Luo clasped his hands in greeting and said, "Happy New Year, Dr. Li!"

"Dr. Luo, Happy New Year! I heard from Director Liang that you're moving to the next clinic tomorrow."

"It's all packed up over there. I won't wait until tomorrow. I'll move over now. There's not much stuff there." Dr. Luo walked to his desk and began tidying up the things on it.

Li Chu stood up and asked, "Is there anything I can help you with?"

"Dr. Li, please sit down. No need for help. I don't have much here, just two books." Dr. Luo stopped what he was doing and looked at Li Chu, asking, "Dr. Li, when I came in this morning, I saw that the white coats soaking in the basin were covered in blood. What happened?"

"Oh, I got that on me last night when I was helping to treat the wounded," Li Chu explained.

"I heard that several people died on the spot last night, and those who were brought in were all badly injured, is that true?" Dr. Luo asked again, being quite gossipy.

"Maybe so. I was too busy last night and didn't pay much attention." Li Chu didn't like to talk about other people's life or death.

Those were vibrant lives, and behind each life were families. This isn't trivial family squabbles, and shouldn't be treated as gossip. Life deserves reverence, especially for a doctor.

"Since you don't need help, Dr. Luo, I'm going to see someone in the obstetrics and gynecology department." Li Chu didn't want to stay in the office any longer, so she walked out of the office after saying that.

Dr. Luo watched Li Chu's retreating figure and curled his lip.

After leaving the office, Li Chu went straight to the obstetrics and gynecology ward.

He came over to see how the older woman was recovering.

An elderly woman was sleeping in the ward, and her child was sleeping next to her.

He Yushui was sitting on another hospital bed reading a book; the old man wasn't there. Li Chu didn't go in; he stood outside the door and gently knocked on the glass.

Hearing the noise, He Yushui looked up and saw Li Chu standing outside the door. Just as she was about to speak, Li Chu waved to her, signaling her to come out. He then put down his book, got up, and walked out of the ward.

"Brother Chu, you've arrived."

"How's the old lady? Where's the old man?" Li Chu asked as He Yushui came out.

"The doctor came this morning and said the recovery is going well, and he can be discharged tomorrow. The old man didn't sleep well last night, so I told him to go home and rest after lunch," He Yushui replied.

In this day and age, let's not even talk about those who don't come to the hospital to give birth. Those who do come to the hospital usually give birth in the morning and leave in the afternoon, or give birth on the first day and leave on the second day. It's almost impossible for someone like this older woman to stay for several days.

"It's good that they're alright. I see they're asleep, so I won't go in. Here, have a few candies." Li Chu took out a handful of candies from his pocket and handed them to He Yushui.

He Yushui accepted it without hesitation, saying, "Thank you, Brother Chu."

"Alright, you can go in now. I'm going to work." Li Chu waved and left.

He Yushui stood at the door and watched Li Chu walk away before entering the ward.

Just as I reached the entrance of the inpatient department, I ran into Dr. He, the head of the surgery department, who was rushing over. Dr. He's eyes were red and his face was haggard, probably because he hadn't had time to sleep at all.

"Xiao Li, what brings you here? What's up?"

"It's nothing, Director He. One of our neighbors just gave birth, so I came to check on her."

"Okay, I'll go up first. I have another surgery later." Director He was about to leave when he stopped and called out to Li Chu, "Xiao Li, the patient with high-level paraplegia from last night has already left."

Before Li Chu could say anything, Director He continued, "He gave up on his own. After you left last night, the wounded soldier regained consciousness for a while, but after realizing his situation, he quickly succumbed." After saying this, Director He patted Li Chu's arm and left.

Li Chu turned and slowly walked towards the office. Yes, the injured soldier gave up on himself. Given his condition, it was really hard to know whether to save him or what to do.

As a doctor, of course I want to do everything I can to save every wounded person. But what would that wounded person from last night think?

Back in his office, Dr. Luo had already taken all his belongings. Li Chu sat down at his desk, suppressing his wandering thoughts, and picked up a book to read.

Although people have already started working, in their hearts, the New Year celebrations are not over until the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. Unless there are special circumstances, no one wants to go to the hospital during the Spring Festival.

There wasn't a single patient all afternoon. Hearing the announcement over the loudspeaker, Li Chu took off her white coat, tidied her desk, and went home.

On the way back, he forced himself to think about pleasant things, trying to cheer himself up and not bring his bad mood home.

As soon as Li Chu opened the door, he saw Xiao Hei rush out of the house and dash out to the yard. Seeing Xiao Hei with its tail between its legs and looking flustered, Li Chu couldn't help but laugh, and his mood improved a lot.
