Zhou Qinglan pushed away Sheng Xiping's restless hands and got up to get dressed.
"Sure, I'll call you that. You're about to go back to school, is it wrong for me to want to be affectionate with you more?"
Sheng Xiping didn't care about any of that. He sat up, put his arm around his wife's waist, and kissed her cheek.
As they kissed, they ended up back in bed.
On rainy days, the construction team doesn't work, and the small repair shop has no work either. Sheng Yunfang and the others still have a few days before school starts, so Zhang Shuzhen is happy to get up a little later to cook.
The family slept until 6:30 before getting up to prepare some food. After eating, they each went about their own business.
Taking advantage of their rare break, Wang Jianshe and others came to the Sheng family home to chat with Sheng Xiping.
As everyone was chatting, they suddenly heard a loudspeaker announce that the Sheng family needed to go to the farm headquarters because someone wanted to speak to them.
Upon hearing this, Sheng Xiping assumed it was Zhou Mingyuan calling, probably about Zhou Qinglan and the others returning to school, so he grabbed an umbrella and went to the farm headquarters.
When he arrived at the site, the call had already ended. The people in the office told Sheng Xiping that the other party had arranged to call back later.
Sheng Xiping nodded and sat down in the field office to wait for a while. Sure enough, the phone rang again in less than five minutes.
Upon answering the phone, it turned out to be someone looking for the Sheng family, so Sheng Xiping quickly took the call.
"Hello, this is Sheng Xiping. May I ask who this is?"
The noisy interference on the phone is due to poor long-distance call signal.
“Xiping, Xiping, it’s me, Chen Ruiqing.”
"Your third son got into university! Peking University! I specifically inquired about it for you. I reckon your bureau will receive the notification before tomorrow."
On the other end of the phone was Chen Ruiqing. Amidst the crackling noise, Chen Ruiqing told Sheng Xiping some explosive news.
"What? Our Xikang got into Peking University?" Sheng Xiping was completely dumbfounded.
"Brother, are you sure you're not mistaken? Does our Xikang have that kind of ability? He can get into Peking University?"
Sheng Xiping felt his head buzzing. This couldn't be possible, could it?
Last year, one of his family members was admitted to Harbin Institute of Technology and the other to Northeast Normal University. He said it was a stroke of good luck for the Sheng family's ancestral graves.
If Peking University comes along again this time? That's not just good luck, it's downright terrible.
Did someone set fire to the Sheng family's ancestral graves? Otherwise, would such a thing have happened?
"Look, would I lie to you? How many Peking University graduates can our province produce? I checked them one by one, and it's your Xikang."
Chen Ruiqing has extensive connections in the provincial capital and knows people in the admissions office, so it's easy for him to find out about this kind of thing.
Long-distance calls are expensive, and Chen Ruiqing was using a public phone, so he couldn't chat with Sheng Xiping for too long. After telling Sheng Xiping the good news, he hung up the phone.
On the other end, Sheng Xiping stood there, phone in hand, stunned, unable to come to his senses for a long time.
"Xiping, what's wrong? Who called? I kept hearing you talking about Peking University. Who studies at Peking University?"
The people in the office stared at Sheng Xiping, asking him questions with great curiosity.
"Oh, it's nothing. Well, I'm going home now, let's talk again another day."
Sheng Xiping didn't say much to the other party. At present, this news was only passed on by Chen Ruiqing, and there was no action from the bureau yet, so it was not advisable to spread the word.
We should hurry up and have Sheng Xikang go to the bureau to inquire and confirm before making any decisions.
Sheng Xiping came out of the farm headquarters and, without even bothering to use an umbrella, ran home as fast as he could in the rain.
"Third brother, hurry up and pack your things. There's a little train today. Take it to the bureau and ask about your acceptance."
Upon entering the house, Sheng Xiping spoke loudly.
The people inside were chatting when they heard Sheng Xiping's words and were all stunned.
"What happened? Which school did the third child get accepted into?"
Sheng Liancheng didn't go to the repair shop today; he was at home. Hearing his eldest son's words, Sheng Liancheng asked excitedly.
"Yes, Brother Ruiqing just called to say that our third son got into Peking University."
"We need to get the third brother to the bureau to find out more information right away; this is no joke." Sheng Xiping shared the good news with everyone.
Upon hearing Sheng Xiping's words, everyone in the room was stunned and turned their gazes to Sheng Xikang, who was standing to the side.
"Peking University? Oh, Xikang, you got into Peking University?"
In the past, many people might not have known what Peking University was.
But these days they listen to the radio every day, and the radio always says that everyone knows a little bit about it.
Peking University, the nation's top university, is located in the capital. For Sheng Xikang to be able to get into this university is truly remarkable.
Sheng Xikang paused for a moment, then scratched his head. "I did apply to Peking University as my first choice, but I didn't expect to actually get in." This kid was quite calm.
When I applied for university, Sheng Xiping happened to be in Shanghai. No one in my family knew anything about these things, and the teachers at school didn't quite understand either.
Anyway, since the enrollment plan listed it and Sheng Xikang's grades were indeed quite good, the teacher encouraged Sheng Xiping to apply and give it a try.
If you don't get into this school, there are other backup options. If all else fails, you can retake the exam for another year.
When the college entrance examination was first reinstated, everyone, from teachers to students, was completely clueless. Nobody really understood these things, so it was like blindly reporting the results.
Sheng Xikang was a bold man. Relying on his status as a recent graduate, he disregarded all the rules and actually put Peking University as his first choice.
At the time, he thought that if it didn't work out, he could study for another year. After all, he was young, and if he studied for another year, he might do better on the exam next year.
So when Sheng Xikang heard from his older brother that he had been admitted to Peking University, he wasn't too surprised, since it was his own choice.
