Sheng Xiping liked to carry his gun on his right shoulder. When taking it out, his right thumb would move upwards from the front of his shoulder, and the gun strap would reach the web of his hand.
Take it off and hand it to your left hand. Hold it with your left hand, and with your right hand, release the safety and simultaneously grip the hand grip in front of the stock.
If there is a situation ahead, the index finger can be immediately inserted into the trigger to aim and fire.
And so, Sheng Xiping, gun in hand, followed the calls of Erlang Shen and General Hei and walked forward.
When he got closer, he realized that Erlang Shen and the Black General had something in their mouths.
Through the faint moonlight filtering through the trees, Sheng Xiping bent down for a closer look and realized it was a badger.
However, this badger seems to be in bad shape; it's injured, and quite badly so.
Sheng Xiping was puzzled, but dared not be careless. He first put the safety on his gun, and then drew his knife to deal with the badger.
Once the badger was dead, both dogs released their grip. Sheng Xiping picked up the dead badger with one hand and called to Erlang Shen and General Hei to walk outside.
Erlang Shen seemed reluctant to leave, and called out several more times towards the forest.
Urged by Sheng Xiping, he reluctantly followed Sheng Xiping outside.
Sheng Xiping, carrying the badger, led the two dogs out of the woods and back to Houdadi.
Wang Jianshe, Gao Haining, and others hurriedly came forward and asked.
"Xiping, what happened? Why did the dog suddenly run into the woods?"
"It must have gone after this big guy, but I find it strange that when I arrived, the guy was already injured."
Sheng Xiping raised his hand, letting everyone see the badger in his hand.
"Let's go back and rest. It would be best if we could build a fire or something to warm ourselves up."
After tonight's commotion, the badgers probably won't come back, and they can rest easy.
So, the group arrived near Hou Dadi, at the former agricultural team's warehouse, which was about to be converted into a collective household building.
They found an empty room, brought in some firewood, and lit it.
By the light of the fire, Sheng Xiping carefully examined the wounds on the badger he had finally caught.
The badger's head was scratched raw and bloody, and there were bite marks on its back.
"Xiping, can you tell what hurt this badger? Is it your dog?"
Wang Jianshe and the others crowded around and asked curiously.
"It's not my dog. Look, this badger has scratches all over its head from sharp claws. My dog doesn't have that ability."
It looks like a mountain raccoon, but given its fighting ability, there's no need for this much effort. I'm a little confused about it too.
Sheng Xiping shook his head, looking puzzled.
The "mountain lynx" that locals refer to is mostly the lynx.
Lynxes have a varied diet, eating pheasants, rabbits, roe deer, and more. When they are starving, they are even willing to fight wolves.
Badgers are also on the lynx's diet, and can be considered one of the badger's few natural enemies.
However, given the lynx's fighting prowess, it seems that it wouldn't require much effort at all; it should be able to pin down the badger with a single paw and crush its spine in one bite.
So Sheng Xiping was quite puzzled: had the badger encountered a lynx?
"Heh, who cares about that? Anyway, we caught a badger tonight, which is better than those two groups, so that's all that matters."
Gao Haining and the others didn't care whether it was a mountain cat or not; all they knew was that they had a good haul tonight, and that was enough.
Four badgers were caught in one night, which is quite a good result. After the battle that night, the badgers were basically scared away.
So Sheng Xiping and the others rested in the empty room without worry. They spread some dry grass on the ground and built a fire in the middle of the room.
The thatch and bark that originally covered the roof have been removed, and the smoke drifts away without bothering anyone.
With such a sheltered place and a campfire, it wasn't too cold.
The group leaned against the pillars or huddled together, just staring blankly into space.
In the middle of the night, Sheng Xiping and the others took Erlang Shen out for another stroll, and as expected, they did not find any trace of the badger.
So I went back to add some firewood and went to sleep peacefully.
After daybreak, Sheng Xiping led the group, following behind Gouzi, into the woods to search for the badger's den.
To completely eliminate any future troubles, the best course of action is to destroy the badger's den.
Actually, badger tracks are easy to find; wherever it goes, the grass lies flat.
Badgers have short legs, and the grass is trampled down by them.
Sheng Xiping had been learning his skills from his master for six or seven years, so tracking a badger was naturally no problem for him. He then led Wang Jianshe and the others to track the badger along the badger trail.
Look at the grass where there is grass, and look at the footprints where there is no grass.
They searched for five or six miles before finally finding the badger's den on a hillside.
The entrances to the burrows where badgers live are very smooth; they keep coming in and out, rubbing their bodies against the surface.
Moreover, badgers dump soil every day, and sometimes a pile of soil can be found not far from the entrance of their burrows.
Badger burrows are underground, and they have more than one entrance. The interiors are interconnected, with bedrooms for resting, toilets for excretion, and so on, resembling an underground castle.
It can be said that the badger is an excellent architect.
Sheng Xiping led his men to search the hillside and found five or six exits.
Outside several of the exits, there are very clear footprints, and several of the freshest footprints prove that badgers were still going in and out last night.
"Xiping, what should we do? Should we use smoke?"
Upon finding the badger's den, everyone was quite excited and eager to wipe out the entire nest of badgers.
"Should we just dig up the badger's den along the entrance?"
Judging from the holes in front of us, this is a large badger den, and there are probably quite a few badgers there.
