Most people use only these two methods to catch badgers.
Find the entrance to the burrow, block up everything else, then light some straw or other materials and stuff them into the burrow to smoke the badger out.
The others, armed with various tools, waited at the entrance of the cave, ready to smash the badger to death whenever it came out.
Another method involves waiting until the badgers hibernate, then using tools such as pickaxes and shovels to dig along the burrow entrance and completely uncover the badger's den. This method is also called "badger digging".
In reality, neither of these approaches is perfect.
Smoke rises upwards; it doesn't like to go downwards.
In winter, the air pressure is low, so the smoke doesn't rise as easily, which is better. Right now, the smoke tends to rise more.
Badger dens are all underground and have hidden ventilation openings, so it's not necessarily possible to smoke the badgers out.
As for catching badgers, that's even more troublesome.
Badger Cave is a maze of twists and turns underground. If you can't figure out the way the underground passages go, you'll have to dig up the whole hillside, which is a waste of effort.
