Chapter 51 Beggar

Su Manao deftly took out ten yuan from the three hundred yuan, and then rolled up the rest of the money.

They tied a rubber band into a large, sturdy roll and stuffed it into the intersection of the roof beams.

Very stable.

This spot is right above that dim light bulb; absolutely no one will see it.

After hiding the money, Su Manao restored everything to its original state, clapped her hands happily, and went out.

Guan Yumei was no longer at the door.

Su Manao confidently strode off towards the state-run restaurant.

It's not mealtime yet, so there's not even any plain noodle soup.

At that time, the only free food available in state-run restaurants was vegetarian steamed buns, which cost 50 cents each and were quite small, making them a poor deal.

So Su Manao squatted down under the restaurant window and waited quietly for the mealtime to arrive.

She didn't realize that she looked like a little beggar.

After a while, an older woman threw half a dirty cornbread at her, which hit her on the head and then rolled to her feet.

Su Manao was furious. She threw it back and shouted, "I'm not a beggar!"

But she was too weak, and the cornbread didn't hit the already departing old woman; it only landed at her feet.

The older woman turned around and clicked her tongue, saying, "What a tragedy! This little beggar is insane!"

Just as Su Manao was about to start cursing, she suddenly saw Su Ruyi and Su Tong walking towards her from afar, chatting and laughing.

She jumped up instantly, ignoring the fact that her head hit the sharp corner of the window, and turned to run into the alley next door.

Su Ruyi and Su Tong came directly to the state-run restaurant after depositing their money at the bank.

It wasn't mealtime yet, but some people would sit down at the table and wait.

The hotel lobby was deserted at the moment, with only the occasional sound of the ticket clerk laughing and joking with the chef in the kitchen.

Su Ruyi pulled Su Tong to sit in the corner by the window.

Then, she seemingly took out the Qingyun brand men's watch from her handbag, but actually from her spatial storage.

"This..." Su Tong's eyes widened. "Where did this come from?"

"Of course I bought it from a department store." Su Ruyi smiled and put it on him. "Fourth Brother, this is a gift for you to go to work. Do you like it?"

"Of course I like it! It even has a double calendar!" Su Tong stared intently at the watch he had just put on his wrist. "But where did you get the ticket for the watch?"

"I exchanged it with Uncle Su from your food factory." Seeing her fourth brother happy, Su Ruyi's eyes also crinkled with laughter.

“Ruyi, could you exchange this watch for a women’s watch? You’ll need a watch more when you go to the countryside!” Su Tong said. “The dormitory has an alarm bell, so I don’t really need a watch.”

"Fourth Brother, I bought one for myself too!" Su Ruyi said, taking out the Peacock brand women's watch from her spatial storage.

"Peacock? Why not plum blossom?" Su Tong asked.

"We're out of plum blossom ones," Su Ruyi said nonchalantly.

She genuinely didn't care.

In her view, a watch is just a convenient tool for telling time; as long as it works, that's enough.

How much did you pay for this watch?

As Su Tong spoke, he took out his money. "Ruyi, don't think your fourth brother's intentions are lacking. Actually, I was planning to ask my colleagues to exchange for more various tickets after I started working and send them to you. You know, I've been staying at home all these years, so I basically don't have any favors to offer. How much is your watch? I'll give you the money for the watch exchange tickets as well. Consider it a gift from your fourth brother, okay?"

Without hesitation, Su Ruyi replied, "Sure, one hundred and seventy in total."

This is my fourth brother's kind gesture, and I can't refuse it.

Su Tong counted out 17 ten-yuan bills and handed them to Su Ruyi with both hands: "Keep the watch for now, your fourth brother will send you an even better gift later!"

Su Ruyi accepted it generously, her face beaming with smiles: "It's already very kind of Fourth Brother to buy me a watch!"

Su Tong took off his watch, carefully placed it in the pocket close to his chest, and buttoned it up: "I'll wear this watch again after I've completely moved out."

Su Ruyi also took off her watch and put it back in her bag, which was actually her spatial storage: "Well, I'm planning to wear it again when I go to the countryside—to avoid any further trouble."

At this moment, the billing clerk of the state-run restaurant, shuffling his shoes, slowly walked out of the kitchen, opened the door with a blank expression, and changed the face of the wooden sign at the door.

"Closed" has been changed to "Open for Business".

Su Tong immediately ran to order food.

Double portions of braised ribbonfish and braised pork are must-orders. Today they also have pan-fried small river shrimp on sale. This dish is crispy and refreshing, but it takes a lot of effort to prepare, so it's not cheap.

Su Tong remembered that Su Ruyi wanted to eat vegetables, so he ordered a stir-fried egg with chives. In his opinion, a plate of stir-fried egg with chives cost 1.5 yuan. Chives are vegetables, and stir-fried eggs add oil and are also nutritious, so it was a good deal.

As usual, each person received a large bowl of rice.

The food was served one after another, and the two began to eat.

Su Manao, who was waiting not far away, watched the two people eating meat by the window with eyes that were practically spitting fire.

State-run restaurants only serve large meat buns for 50 cents each during mealtimes, and even then, it's limited.

In just a short while, she had already seen seven or eight people carrying large meat buns wrapped in oil paper, walking out happily.

Su Ruyi and Su Tong ate their meal relatively quickly.

It's still going at a whirlwind pace.

After watching the two finish eating and leave, Su Manao rushed into the state-run restaurant and slapped ten yuan in front of the cashier: "I want ten big meat buns!"

The clerk didn't even lift her eyelids: "Sold out."

Su Manao: "..."

Three minutes later, Su Manao left the state-run restaurant, munching on a vegetarian bun in each hand.
