"Why go back?"
Su Ruyi straightened up and looked directly at Guan Yumei.
Guan Yumei felt guilty and was speechless for a moment, her gaze slowly shifting away: "Go...go back to see your grandparents, they miss you very much."
"They miss me? Do you even believe that yourself?"
Su Ruyi glanced at her disdainfully, then picked up her bedding and swept it aside forcefully: "Get out of the way."
"These are your bedding from home; you can't take them with you!"
Guan Yumei took a step back to move aside, but then shouted and grabbed Su Ruyi's arm.
"Can't I take it with me?"
Su Ruyi narrowed her eyes. "Are you sure?"
"How can you not be sure? This bedding is my dowry!"
Guan Yumei's eyes were red.
"Oh, all you brought as dowry was a tattered cotton quilt, you're really pathetic."
After Su Ruyi finished speaking, she broke free from Guan Yumei, carried the bedding to the middle of the yard, and threw it on the ground.
Guan Yumei didn't know what she was going to do. She opened her mouth as if to curse, but then stopped.
Su Ruyi went back to the kitchen, took a match, lit it under Guan Yumei's watchful eye, and threw it onto the bedding.
When the flames encountered the rotten cotton, they immediately opened their mouths and devoured it.
The flames rose up almost instantly, and a large plume of black smoke billowed up from the entire bedding.
"ah!!!"
Guan Yumei screamed, futilely trying to stomp on it, but not daring to get closer: "You jinx! How dare you! That's my dowry!"
But the rotten cotton wadding burned extremely quickly; in less than a minute, only ashes remained.
Su Ruyi smiled: "Since you can't take it with you, I believe you won't use the things I've used again, right?"
Guan Yumei clutched her chest, remaining silent, her eyes fixed on Su Ruyi.
At this time, Su Tong had borrowed a cart again from the bourgeois older sister next door.
Su Ruyi grabbed her bowl and chopsticks and haphazardly placed them on the cart.
Taking the bowl and chopsticks with you is more of a symbolic gesture.
"You can't take the bowls and chopsticks either! These belong to the Su family!"
But Guan Yumei was so angry that she lost her mind. She was like a fighting rooster, scrutinizing every little clue.
"Okay, then I won't bring it." Su Ruyi calmly watched Guan Yumei go crazy.
Just as she had predicted, even Guan Yumei's words were almost identical.
After all, she was just a rural woman with a very limited vocabulary.
After following Su Dazhi into the city, all she learned over the years was shrewdness and cunning, which only made things worse.
In conclusion—she's a truly wicked and stupid mother.
Su Tong had already bought her two of each of the new bowls and plates, and a full ten pairs of chopsticks—the sales clerk at the supply and marketing cooperative was so surprised when she heard that he wanted ten pairs of chopsticks that she couldn't stop smiling.
Su Ruyi picked up her broken bowl, held it high, and then gently released it.
With a "crack," the broken bowl fell to the ground and shattered into pieces.
Then, she grabbed the chopsticks with both hands and snapped them in two.
"Snap!"
The chopsticks were broken in two.
Su Ruyi loosened her grip again, and the broken chopsticks fell to the ground.
Guan Yumei felt like she was about to be driven mad by this jinx. She opened her mouth, but couldn't utter a complete sentence for a long time: "You...you..."
Su Tong ignored what was happening here and instead placed his bedding, which he had already bundled into a large bundle, on the cart. Then, he placed a few scattered books that he hadn't packed before (including a large dictionary that contained money, though it was now empty) and some other old items bundled together on top of the bedding.
Both bundles were neatly and securely tied.
On the cart, a layer of old newspapers that Su Tong had prepared in advance had already been laid out.
As expected of Su, the super-clean freak.
Then, he smiled at Su Ruyi and said, "I thought we needed to transport two quilts, so I borrowed a cart."
"It's alright, the cart saves effort, and the road is quite long."
Su Ruyi's tone was very gentle.
As they talked, Su Tong set up the cart, put the leather rope over his shoulder, and Su Ruyi supported him from behind. The two ignored Guan Yumei and walked out of the Su family courtyard, chatting and laughing.
The smoke rising from the burning bedding had already attracted a lot of neighbors to watch, and they were all pointing and gossiping.
Guan Yumei chased after them to the courtyard gate, watched the two leave, and saw the neighbors' amused looks. She felt her face turn bright red with embarrassment.
In a moment of impulsiveness, she chased after him out of the courtyard and shouted loudly in front of everyone, "Fourth brother, you need to keep an eye on this jinx, don't let her go looking for random men!"
Upon hearing this, Su Tong paused, ripped off the leather rope, and strode back with a stern face.
Guan Yumei had never seen her gentle and refined son with his face so flushed.
Su Tong walked up to Guan Yumei and stood still.
Guan Yumei took a step back in fear.
Unexpectedly, Su Tong bent down, grabbed a handful of dirt from the ground, and quickly stuffed it into Guan Yumei's half-open mouth.
Then, he turned around and walked away.
The onlookers fell silent instantly.
A few seconds later, someone laughed.
Soon, people burst into uncontrollable laughter.
After accompanying Su Tong to deliver bedding and other items to the food factory dormitory, the two parted ways at the intersection.
On this day, as agreed, the two each had a task.
Su Tong took a car to Wang'ao Village.
Guan Yuzhu, who was working in the field, saw Su Tong standing on the edge of the field, greeting him with a smile, and immediately became furious.
He threw down his sickle, rolled up his sleeves, and started to climb up the ridge: "You wicked little brat, how dare you come here?"
