Meanwhile, Gao Lin and Shen Qianqian, the masterminds behind the news that Qi Ran had taken care of Old Man Song until his death, were eating sunflower seeds at Gao Lin's house.
"Sister, do you think there's anything suspicious about Old Man Song's death?" Shen Qianqian asked Gao Lin while cracking sunflower seeds. She only learned about this matter after Gao Lin told her.
Normally, people living in the city would have no idea what kind of mischief Qi Ran was up to in the village; they could only find out through other people's stories.
“Definitely!” Gao Lin said firmly, then sighed, “But it rained so hard five days ago that hardly anyone in the village stayed outside, and no one saw what happened at the Song family’s house that day.”
Ultimately, Gao Lin and Shen Qianqian both felt that Old Man Song's unexpected death might be related to Qi Ran, since Qi Ran was the first to notice something amiss when no one else in the village had noticed anything unusual about the Song family.
If it were just someone who's always interested in other people's business, that would be one thing, but it happened to be Qi Ran, a mean-spirited and selfish person.
It's hard not to have doubts about this.
Unfortunately, there was no evidence to prove that Qi Ran was involved in this matter.
In the end, Qi Ran overcame all opposition and opened the small shop.
However, because of her help to Old Man Song, even though the small shop was located in the center of the village, most people preferred to take a detour to buy things from Lu Yunchuan and Shen Qian's small shop rather than go to Qi Ran's small shop.
Qi Ran watched as the three families' small shop made a fortune, while she herself was constantly losing money, and she was so jealous that she gritted her teeth.
....
That night, Lu Yuncheng, unusually energetic, pulled Qi Ran into his arms and said, "Wife, let's have another son."
"What's the point of having sex? I'm already annoyed!" Qi Ran pushed Lu Yuncheng away. All she could think about was how to improve the business of her small shop. She had no time to think about the brothel with Lu Yuncheng.
Wait, have a boy!
Qi Ran seemed to have suddenly unlocked her full potential, sitting up straight and clapping her hands in approval: "Yes, we can have a son!"
She suddenly remembered the fertility pills available for exchange in the system shop. If she added them to the food and had those aunties eat them, wouldn't that instantly make her a star, and she wouldn't have to worry about not having customers?
The more she thought about it, the more excited she became, as if she could see money beckoning to her and houses in the city waving at her.
Lu Yuncheng thought his wife agreed with his idea, and his hands started moving restlessly.
After Qi Ran figured this out, she became interested and stayed up late into the night with Lu Yuncheng before finally falling asleep.
These days, there are still quite a few families in the village who want to have a big, healthy son, for example, in the western part of the village.
The Ding family was one such example. They had given birth to two daughters in a row, and now she was pregnant with her third child. The whole family was searching everywhere for folk remedies to conceive a son. Qi Ran then decided to make her the first recipient of the fertility pill.
"Ding Juan." Qi Ran happened to see Ding Juan on the road and called out to her, "I heard you've been looking for ways to have a son lately. I happen to have one here, would you like to try it?"
"Is it possible?" Ding Juan hesitated. "Even you only have one daughter..."
Her meaning was clear: if Qi Ran's method really worked, then why didn't she have a son?
"Whether it works or not, just try it first." Qi Qi handed her the drink she had prepared beforehand, which contained the fertility pill. "Anyway, it won't hurt to try, right? If it really works, help me spread the word and say that what I sell guarantees fertility!"
Ding Juan accepted the drink and returned home with some doubt. The drink seemed to have a strange magic about it. After hesitating for a moment, she finally twisted open the cap and drank it down.
About three months later, Ding Juan gave birth to a baby boy, which made her whole family overjoyed. Especially after hearing that the drinks came from Qi Ran's shop, they went back and bought several more. The Ding family's actions thoroughly piqued the curiosity of the rest of the village, and Ding Juan, remembering Qi Qi's kindness, introduced the baby to each of them:
"It's all thanks to the fertility drinks I bought from Qi Ran's shop. She claims that everything in her shop guarantees fertility!"
Upon hearing this, even those who had previously held prejudices against Qi Ran flocked to Qi Qi's small shop, vying to buy the fertility pills.
By the end of the day, Qi Ran's shop was almost completely emptied. Clutching a thick wad of cash, she swaggered home.
When Qi Ran returned home, almost the entire family was chatting in the yard. She seized the opportunity to boast, "Wow, making money is a piece of cake!"
She held one end of the money and swung the stack of bills around.
"Sister-in-law, how much are these?" Chen Qin's eyes lit up, but what really tempted her were the items sold in Qi Ran's shop. She'd heard in the village today that her sister-in-law's shop offered things that could guarantee childbirth, but she wondered if they even guaranteed pregnancy.
Chen Qin rubbed her hands together and asked with a fawning smile, "Sister-in-law, do you have any maternity bags in your shop? If so, could you give me one?"
"Guaranteed pregnancy?" Qi Ran hadn't thought of that before, but Chen Qin's reminder made her realize a new business opportunity.
However, she still remembered Chen Qin's betrayal. Trying to get pregnant for free? Dream on!
Qi Ran refused without hesitation: "We're not family anymore. I bought everything in my shop with my own money, why should I give it to you for free? Besides, I still vividly remember how you betrayed me for a mere hundred yuan. I don't know how you have the nerve to come and freeload!"
