"Impossible." The captain instinctively rejected the answer.
Old Man Song doesn't like to clean his house, so it's understandable if there's any unpleasant smell.
As the captain pried open the padlock and pushed open the door, a stench filled the air.
The stench hit them, and the two of them involuntarily gagged.
The bloodstains on Old Man Song's body, which was lying on the ground, had long since dried. He lay motionless, and the stench emanating from his body made him unapproachable.
This was the first time Qi Ran had ever seen such a scene. Although she had anticipated the discovery of Old Man Song, she never imagined that the smell would be so unpleasant.
She had thought she'd have to pinch herself to force the tears out, but the smell actually helped bring them to her eyes. Suppressing her nausea, she rushed forward and said in a trembling voice, "Grandpa Song, who exactly harmed you!"
The captain was particularly surprised by Qi Ran's attitude: "How come I've never heard of you being very familiar with Old Man Song before?"
He was completely baffled.
When Old Man Song was young, he was a notorious scoundrel in the village. Nobody wanted to have much contact with him. He even married a mute girl from the village. As a result, he gradually became more and more withdrawn.
How did Qi Ran become acquainted with him?
Qi Ran seemed to see through the captain's question, and pretended to wipe away her tears, saying, "I met Grandpa Song because of a heavy rain. He accidentally fell into the water, and my husband and I rescued him."
"After that, he said that because we helped him save him, and he didn't have much time left, and his children weren't by his side, he was willing to leave his house to us after he died, on the condition that we take care of him in his old age and see him off in his final days."
"I didn't expect that." Qi Ran was almost nauseated by the stench and turned her head to take a breath.
Even with the freshest air, she said, "Grandpa Song, how can we face you if you leave like this? How can we live up to your expectations?"
"Is it true?" The captain was so annoyed by Qi Ran's wailing that he couldn't tell the truth anymore.
"Of course." Qi Ran took out the evidence he had prepared beforehand and handed it to the captain: "Look, this is what Old Man Song drafted before."
The captain read it carefully and finally believed it to be true. He then asked, "Since you are so familiar with Old Man Song, do you know if he has offended anyone recently?"
He felt that the news of Old Man Song's death was really strange. The door was inexplicably locked from the outside for five whole days, and no one even noticed that something was wrong during that time.
Qi Ran feigned sadness and said, "He was all alone at home. Old people are prone to failing eyesight, and he might have accidentally fallen to the ground and lost consciousness. Then someone with ill intentions took the opportunity to lock the door from the outside, which is why no one found him until he died."
"Look at the wound on his head, it might have been caused by accidentally bumping into the corner of the table!"
The captain looked in the direction Qi Ran was pointing and indeed the wound on his head looked like a bruise. For a moment, he believed Qi Ran's explanation.
"Sigh, Old Man Song is pitiful. Since you have an agreement with him, you should hurry up and take care of his funeral arrangements. As for who did this despicable thing, it's probably impossible to find out in a short time." The brigade leader pinched his brow; he could already foresee the helplessness and frustration of confronting the entire village.
Alright.
That day, Qi Ran's initial excitement at receiving a free house vanished the moment she returned home and encountered Shen Qianqian.
"Shen Qianqian, why are you back?" Qi Ran asked, his lips pursed.
Shen Qianqian smiled brightly: "Isn't the small shop reopening? I came back especially to celebrate with them. There's also something else."
Upon hearing what she said, Qi Ran felt her eyebrows twitch.
Sure enough, the next sentence Shen Qianqian uttered made her feel inexplicably irritated.
“I heard that my sister-in-law is going to take care of Old Man Song in the village in her daughter’s name until his death.” Shen Qianqian took Old Lady Li’s hand and said to her, “Mom, look at her, she thinks you and Dad are a burden, but she takes good care of an old man she’s never met.”
"Tsk tsk, to call her an ingrate is an insult to the wolf pack."
"What!" Upon hearing this, Old Lady Li's unpleasant memories of Qi Qi flooded back into her mind.
"You...you actually intend to take care of Old Man Song in his old age and see him to his death in your daughter's name?!"
Putting aside the fact that Qi Ran was caring for Old Man Song in his daughter's name until his death, the fact that she was caring for Old Man Song in his own name until his death is disgusting enough!
Who is Old Man Song? He was a notorious rogue in the village when he was young. How many young women did he ruin?
"Qi Ran, from now on, when you and Lu Yuncheng go out, don't ever say you're from the Lu family!" Old Mrs. Li was furious. She never imagined she could have such a disgraceful son and daughter-in-law!
Qi Ran, however, didn't care. She'd already gotten the house and was about to open a small shop, making a lot of money, so why should she care what others thought?
To her surprise, the very next day, as soon as she stepped out the door, a passing aunt threw a rotten egg at her and spat at her, saying, "Pah! You shameless bastard!"
In a fit of anger, Qi Ran picked up a pebble and threw it at her aunt, instantly catching the surrounding aunts off guard.
Driven to desperation, they all joined the fray, and countless pebbles rained down on Qi Ran simultaneously.
In the end, Qi Ran could only flee home in a sorry state.
She wiped away her tears with one hand and pressed the bruises on her skin where she had been hit by a stone with the other: "What kind of mess is this?!"
Seeing Qi Ran's state, Old Lady Li felt no sympathy whatsoever; instead, she added fuel to the fire, saying, "Those who do evil will not live!"
