The car started and left the village.
Watching the car disappear from sight, Hu Chuncao suddenly remembered she hadn't paid yet. "In-law, the money... I haven't paid you!"
"Stop making a fuss, as if you're afraid others won't know. Here you are, come in quickly," the eldest daughter's mother-in-law said irritably.
Hu Chuncao quickly followed the head maid and her mother-in-law to the west room.
The old lady took out a thousand yuan and handed it to Hu Chuncao.
"How come it's only one thousand? Isn't it two thousand?" Hu Chuncao immediately bristled.
"Didn't your daughter tell you that I have to take a thousand yuan as a kickback?" The eldest girl rolled her eyes at Hu Chuncao.
Hu Chuncao… “Shouldn’t you give it to me after it’s all done?” She had no intention of giving it to him at all.
“Everyone has left, and you’ve already taken the money. Doesn’t that mean the deal is done? Our family is already large, and your whole family is still here. There are many places where money is needed. We’re a bit tight on cash right now, so I’ll take this first. It can also help my in-laws get some nourishment.”
Grandma Da Yatou knew exactly what Hu Chuncao was thinking. They were both cunning foxes; why try to play games with her?
Hu Chuncao chuckled awkwardly, "My dear in-law, my family urgently needs money right now. We still have a house to build. Give me this money first, and I'll give you the kickback after the baby is born."
"My dear in-law, you think you can get away with not paying me your kickback? Well, before anything happens, I'll have someone send your daughter back. If we weren't in-laws, would your family even have this opportunity?"
Grandma Da Ya patted off imaginary dust from her body.
“Look at you, in-law, I’m also having a hard time. I was thinking of giving you the money later, but well, here you go first. We’ll be staying here until spring.” Hu Chuncao wasn’t one to take a loss. If they took her money, they could stay a few more months and recoup their investment.
The eldest daughter's mother-in-law snorted angrily, but ultimately said nothing.
Yan Xi followed the middle-aged man into the city. The middle-aged man didn't say a word the whole way. The car turned east and west and finally arrived at the gate of a courtyard.
"Get out of the car and come with me."
Yan Xi nervously followed the middle-aged man into the courtyard. The courtyard was a small two-section house with high walls. Even in the dead of winter, there was no snow or ice in the courtyard; it was very clean.
The middle-aged man led Yan Xi to the backyard. The house was warm, and an old man in his fifties or sixties was reading a book.
"This is Elder Yun, Elder Yun, this is Yan Xi, the new nanny."
Yan Xi felt uneasy, wondering why the middle-aged man had brought her here.
Elder Yun glanced at Yan Xi a few times and nodded.
The middle-aged man led Yan Xi out and into the room next door. "This is your living quarters. From now on, you will be responsible for cleaning and cooking every day. Old Master Yun prefers lighter flavors..."
Yan Xi was completely bewildered. If she hadn't overheard her older sister and mother's conversation, she would have really thought she was there to be a nanny, someone who worked as a nanny during the day and did *that* at night.
"Ask me if you have any questions. Did you understand?" the middle-aged man asked.
Yan Xi, lost in thought, nodded.
The middle-aged man took her out to familiarize herself with the surroundings, and then he left.
As Yan Xi worked, she looked around. This courtyard was very large and nice; it must be worth a lot of money. If she could be the mistress of this place, she would be incredibly happy.
"Little Yan, cook some millet porridge and stir-fry some cabbage for lunch," came Old Yun's voice.
"Okay, I'll do it right away," Yan Xi quickly stopped her random thoughts and went to the kitchen to cook.
Yan Xi did not see the middle-aged man reappear until dinner was over.
