Old lady: "What's wrong? Are Black people not allowed to leave the country anymore?"
Little Fish... "It's not milk, it's so dark, my classmates will laugh at me."
The old lady said, "Your classmates are so shallow. They laugh at people just because they're a little dark-skinned. If someone were poor or didn't do well in school, they would laugh at them to death. You're just a kid from an ordinary family. Don't be so vain. As Chairman Mao said, 'Labor is the most glorious thing.'"
Little Fish rolled her eyes quietly. "Grandma, this isn't the old society anymore. We don't have to do this kind of manual labor. Besides, our family isn't an ordinary family. My dad earns quite a lot now."
Seeing her say that, the old lady didn't say anything more. Two generations had passed, and it wasn't her place to educate them. She sat down under the eaves with her cane and watched her children and grandchildren work.
The second son's family worked the fastest; all three boys were adults, and his family had the most labor force.
"Second sister-in-law, if it were a time to earn work points, your family's three able-bodied members would definitely be the best off in the village," Su Mo exclaimed.
“They didn’t catch the right time. They were just having babies when we were earning work points. Now houses are expensive and dowries are expensive. They’re just getting married right now. If you’re a step behind, you’ll be a step behind. Every step you take will be at the point where you have to spend money,” Chunni said glaring at her three eldest sons.
"Second sister-in-law, are you still short of money? Have Da Bao and Er Bao found girlfriends yet?" the third brother joked.
Erbao quickly waved his hand, "No, I just started work, no rush."
Seeing that Da Bao hadn't said anything, the third brother asked, "Da Bao, are you dating someone?"
Da Bao's ears turned red, and he quietly hummed in agreement.
"Come on, tell your third uncle, what do you think of the girl?" The third brother immediately became interested.
"You really have a boyfriend? Why didn't you tell me?" Chunni really didn't know.
The second child looked over too.
Da Bao blushed and said, "I got home and started working, I didn't have time to say anything."
"Why didn't you call and tell them? You're so stubborn!" Chunni scolded.
"It's nothing urgent, I'll figure it out when I get back," Da Bao explained.
"Second sister-in-law, go away. Da Bao, tell me quickly, is your boyfriend good-looking?" the third brother gossiped.
"It looks good," Da Bao said with a silly grin.
"Second brother, look at this! In our family, we judge people by their looks. Look at your stupid face." The third brother grinned, showing his big teeth.
The second brother, with his dead fish eyes, said, "You think you can judge a book by its cover? I value character more."
"Pah! Li Lao Er, who doesn't know who? You only married your second sister-in-law because she was pretty, even though she was from the countryside. Have you forgotten how Mom used to scold you every day?" The third brother exposed the second brother's shortcomings.
The second brother said, "That's still better than you. You've been sucking up for years, and now you can sell hats from home."
Su Mo's eyes shot towards the third brother like arrows.
The third brother, with a strong will to survive, said, "Wife, don't listen to my second brother's nonsense. He's just jealous that I found such an excellent wife as you."
The second son scoffed, "Do I need to tell you your story of how you made your fortune?"
The third brother quickly covered the second brother's mouth, saying, "Shut up, you rascal. If you say another word, I'll silence you."
Su Mo gave the three men a forced smile and a look that said, "If you can't explain yourself properly when we get home, you'll be in for a world of trouble."
The third brother smiled ingratiatingly, "Wife, my second brother was just joking with me."
The second brother shoved the third brother's hand away, revealing that he himself was the rabbit and yet dared to expose the third brother's shortcomings.
"Tell me about your boyfriend, how long have you been dating him?" Li Mancang was busy with important matters and his attention was still on Da Bao.
"It's been more than three months. She's from out of town and works at a logistics company," Da Bao said simply, blushing.
"From out of town? Where are you from?" Chunni asked.
“From Jiang Province,” Da Bao said, grinning his big teeth.
