Chapter 14 The Beginning

Ignoring the situation outside, Li Xiao obediently recuperated in the space.

Work a little each day, then rest a little, eat and drink, watch a post-apocalyptic movie, and time flies by.

After what seemed like several days, the throbbing pain in her head finally subsided. Although the pain was gone, she still couldn't use her mental energy freely; she didn't want to ruin it.

You can go out now that you're all better.

After what happened last time, Li Xiao is much calmer and more composed now. She thinks things through more carefully before acting, and learns from her mistakes.

Looking at myself in the mirror, I felt refreshed and full of energy. My bright eyes were slightly pursed, and my face was serene.

I was wearing a gray tracksuit, sneakers, and carrying my usual backpack. Inside were two packs of cookies, two bottles of mineral water, and a pack of tissues, just for show.

Grabbing the axe he had been using, he carefully left the space.

Outside was a cleaning room, with brooms and mops piled up against the wall, and buckets and other miscellaneous items on the floor.

I gently opened the door and went out; I could hear a sound coming from inside.

It's really sensitive; it knew there were living people as soon as it came out. Li Xiao sighed helplessly.

Soon, several zombies appeared in front of them; well, they must be white-collar workers from this company.

He gripped the axe tightly and chopped at the well-dressed zombies, hacking at their ugly heads. It wasn't as easy as chopping a watermelon, but it was still effortless.

The cubicles were empty, but when I rummaged through them, I found snacks, potato chips, preserved plums, chewing gum, and coffee in the drawers. There was quite a lot of stuff.

And so, Li Xiao began searching through the company. She didn't want the dead potted plants, but she could keep the whole bucket of mineral water and take the unopened bottles of beverages.

The company wasn't big; all I found were 4 bags of potato chips, 3 bags of preserved plums, 6 strips of chewing gum, as well as cookies, gummies, coffee, slimming tea, and a number of sanitary napkins. It was a decent haul.

Searching for the company is still possible. Office buildings are generally not frequented by many people because they don't have a lot of supplies. Most people will look for places with more supplies, such as shops, restaurants, snack bars, convenience stores, and shopping malls.

Generally, gains come with risks; that's inevitable. It's impossible to say there's no danger at all. To think you can obtain resources without lifting a finger is just wishful thinking.

The supplies here aren't plentiful, but there aren't many zombies, so it's manageable. Searching quickly and with low risk is a viable option.

Li Xiao is much more composed now. What happened before has taught her a lot. Less risk and fewer supplies are fine; the main thing now is to understand the situation at the base and see if she can find out any information to prepare for her journey north.

I slowly searched each floor and found some drinks and a small amount of clay pot rice, instant rice, and instant hot pot, in addition to snacks.

What was particularly delightful was that there was a popular online company inside, presumably selling food, with a huge amount of delicious items piled up in Li Xiao's warehouse: dried sweet potatoes, beef jerky, shredded squid, spicy fish slices, instant coffee... all of which had entered Li Xiao's warehouse.

I don't know how I found this place that day. There are several influencer companies in this building, selling clothes, cosmetics, and beauty products. Each company is quite large, and the warehouses are full of goods.

There were no living people left, only wandering zombies roaming around.

Standing in front of the window of the building that says 25 stories, looking down at the empty streets below, I felt a pang of sadness.

In the distance, tall buildings stand tall, interspersed with towering trees. There is no sign of human life, only the occasional roar that reaches your ears.

The sky was beginning to clear, the dark clouds were starting to disperse, and the gradually rising temperature kept her from letting her guard down. The continuous rain had ended, and the blazing sun was about to follow.

Thinking it over, I climbed upwards step by step, searching the entire building one by one. Like an office building, there wouldn't be many zombies inside; the supplies would depend on which companies were located there.

She happened to walk into a company that sold online; otherwise, she wouldn't have had such a great success.

There's no need to rush downstairs; you can go down slowly. She already cleared out all the zombies.

When she reached the 6th floor, she heard voices below and stopped. She checked her phone and saw it was 3 PM.

I can't stay put; even if I don't, the people below will come up. It would be worse for them to block me, so it's better for me to go down first.

Thinking about it, I started walking down. The further down I went, the clearer the sound became.

As soon as I reached the fourth floor, I was spotted. "Who's there?" a man's voice rang out.

Li Xiao stopped and saw two people standing at the entrance of the stairs on this floor, a man and a woman. They must have been the two who had just spoken.

The two men saw Li Xiao slowly walking down from above, and their attention turned to her.

The girl in front of me was wearing a gray tracksuit and black sneakers. She wore a mask so most of her face was not visible, but her calm eyes revealed a faint coldness. Her black hair was tied in a bun, and she carried a black backpack. The axe in her hand hung by her side, with red, black, and white substances dripping from it.

The two couldn't help but exchange a glance. The girl in front of them couldn't tell her age, but she gave off a feeling that she was not to be trifled with.

The man with the buzz cut spoke first: "Are you alone? Have you seen anyone upstairs?"

"have no idea."

The woman next to her panicked upon hearing this, "How could you not know? Didn't you come down from up there? Are you just trying to avoid talking?" Her sudden increase in voice was very unsettling.

Li Xiao glanced at her, and when the woman saw Li Xiao turn to look at her, she said unhappily, "What are you looking at!" The unfriendly tone made Li Xiao very unhappy. What kind of person is she? Why does she always argue with people? Is she seriously ill?

"What's wrong? You can't let people see this. What's the use of having face? You might as well throw it away." Li Xiao's tone was still gentle and pleasant.

"You—!" Before she could finish speaking, she was interrupted by the man with the buzz cut. "Limin, that's enough!" He turned and looked directly at the woman who had spoken, signaling her to stop. This was the time to ask questions; they were about to start arguing before they could even get any information.

"But she—" the woman persisted. The man didn't give her a chance, which made her stomp her foot in anger.

Only she knew in her heart that she simply couldn't stand Li Xiao being so clean and neatly dressed.

Unlike her, who had only been in the apocalypse for a few days and had run out of food because she hadn't stored up much, and then there was no electricity, no water, and no way to maintain personal hygiene.

She looked like a refugee, her hair a mess, and her clothes hadn't been changed in days. She even smelled of something. Although everyone was the same in the apocalypse, it was strange that a woman who was cleaner and tidier than her was appearing.

Everyone else is the same, but you are different, so that's your fault. In the end, it's just jealousy.

Sometimes, a woman's jealousy comes and goes inexplicably, like it does now.

This is something Li Xiao doesn't know. Even if she did, she would only scoff and say to her, "A bitch is just being pretentious."
