Chapter 15: Incident

The man gave the woman a warning look, and she reluctantly shut her mouth. She glared at Li Xiao with resentment; it was all her fault for making her suffer.

Li Xiaozhen felt baffled. This was the first time she had met this woman. What was wrong with her? Why was she always targeting her? Was she crazy?

The man gave a simple, honest smile and reached out his hand to shake hands with Li Xiao.

Li Xiao glanced at it but didn't move. Her face remained calm and expressionless, revealing nothing.

Seeing that Li Xiao didn't intend to reach out, the man lowered his eyes and withdrew his hand.

Still smiling, he said to Li Xiao, "Beautiful lady, I'm sorry, she didn't mean any harm. We were arguing just now, and she unconsciously brought out her emotions. Please don't mind." As he spoke, he scratched his head.

Only then did Li Xiao get a good look at the man in front of her. He had a buzz cut, a slightly round head, and gave off a simple-minded vibe. His eyes weren't big, and they narrowed into slits when he smiled. His nose was a bit flat, and his lips were a bit thick. He wasn't particularly outstanding and looked like an honest man. But while he looked honest, he wasn't honest at all.

The first thing I said to her was if she was alone. What's the big deal about being alone or with others? There was a hidden meaning in my words. I don't need to say more; I saw that woman being aggressive, and if I didn't stop her at first, I'd only speak up later, lest people wouldn't understand what I was up to.

A simple-minded look can easily give people the wrong impression. However, not everyone is a fool.

The woman wasn't any better; she was wearing a dirty coat with patches of grime, unzipped to reveal a black camisole underneath, and fitted dark blue jeans that clung tightly to her legs, making them appear very long.

With short hair and upturned eyebrows, he gave off a mean and unapproachable vibe. His thin lips were pouting, and his small eyes glared at her angrily.

I wonder if there are more bad people in this apocalypse, because she keeps running into them.

Are all the good people dead? Just as I was about to turn around and go downstairs to leave, a pair of hands blocked my way.

Following the hand, her gaze settled on the face of the seemingly honest man. He had a smile on his face and said to her, "Hey, beautiful, don't be in such a hurry to leave. You haven't told me yet, what's going on upstairs?"

Li Xiao knew that this person wouldn't let her leave unless she said something. "What do you want to know?"

"Hey, I just wanted to ask you, when you came downstairs, were there a lot of zombies up there? Did you search them all?" He said, scratching his head sheepishly with a sheepish grin.

It's said that you can't hit a smiling face. If someone comes to ask you something with a smile, and you don't give them a reply, they'll think you're doing it on purpose.

"There are zombies, of course there are. I just looked around outside, and you see I didn't find anything. I was alone, so it wasn't easy for me to go in. I killed two zombies outside, but they were too scary, so I came down." She said, feigning an embarrassed smile. But no one could see that.

I didn't go into every company on every floor; I just randomly went into two and moved on to the next floor. I didn't kill every zombie I saw—that would be exhausting. I'd kill a couple if there were any, and run away if there were more.

As they were talking, two more people came out, each carrying two large, bulging bags. They were still calling out, "Boss Qi, Boss Qi." Seeing that there was another person standing outside, they stopped talking.

The two men sized up Li Xiao and couldn't help but laugh. "Hey, boss, is this the new girl?" "Girl, new here." They were unusually overly friendly.

"No." Two denials rang out simultaneously; they were indeed working together, their tacit understanding was remarkable.

However, this also reminded the crew-cut man. He then asked Li Xiaolai, "Beautiful lady, you're alone too, why don't you join our team? There are six of us, and we're all easy to get along with, what do you say?"

"No need." He then prepared to leave.

The man with the buzz cut was taken aback; he hadn't expected this woman to be so disrespectful.

A dark cloud immediately settled over his face, and the people around him, seeing his expression change, couldn't help but turn cold.

The two men behind her stepped forward, intending to stop her.

Li Xiao turned her head, looked at these people, gripped the axe in her hand, and narrowed her eyes. "What? You have to join us?" she said mockingly.

After a moment, the man with the buzz cut replied, "Of course not." He finished speaking slowly and deliberately, gesturing for the two men to move aside.

The two men tilted their heads and stepped back to stand next to the man with the buzz cut, looking at her with ill intent.

Li Xiao withdrew her gaze, picked up the axe, and slowly walked down the stairs. The four people standing at the top of the stairs on the fourth floor watched her walk down step by step.

"Boss," one of the taller men began, but was interrupted before he could speak. Seeing the crew-cut man raise his hand, he immediately stopped talking. He gestured with his eyes, "Boss, what's going on?"

The man with the buzz cut gave them a look that said "stay calm" without saying anything.

No one else spoke, but the woman was the first to object.

"Hey Ming, why are you being so polite to her? And why did you even want her to join us? She's so annoying." He said, glaring at her.

Ming didn't say much, only remarking that "this woman is not simple," before heading downstairs.

The two men exchanged a glance and followed him downstairs, not forgetting to carry the supplies they had painstakingly gathered. Only the woman remained, stomping her feet in anger, but no one paid her any attention.

...

Li Xiao walked out of the building and realized she had run into the commercial street near the market. Most of the buildings here were office buildings; further ahead lay the residential area. No wonder the area looked unfamiliar earlier; she had only seen it on a map and wasn't familiar with the area.
