Chapter 19 Supermarket

The sound of gunfire came from inside, "bang," "bang," several times in a row.

Li Xiao straightened up and looked towards the supermarket entrance. The man, who had been leaning against the car, stood up, gripped the gun tightly, and was clearly tense.

Sounds started coming from inside the supermarket, and you could hear people talking.

Li Xiao had been stuck here for half a day and was getting annoyed, but she didn't show it.

These people have firearms; I wonder who they are.

I stumbled upon this place by accident. I had just closed the map when this happened. It's really frustrating.

The sounds grew louder and louder, involving both men and women, and quite a few people, creating a chaotic scene. The roars of zombies were also clearly mixed in.

She prepared for battle, not knowing who these people were. What if they all ran away and abandoned her, leaving her to face a horde of zombies alone?

Thinking about all this made her irritable and agitated. What kind of mess was this? She'd been tricked like this for no reason; it was just too unlucky.

She dared not move an inch, for the gun was already aimed at her head, and she couldn't run away.

She was furious.

Just then, a few people ran out from inside.

In front of me were two women. One had her hair in a ponytail and was wearing a white T-shirt and jeans; the other had short hair that reached her ears, a dark blue short-sleeved T-shirt that revealed her midriff due to her movements, and khaki cropped pants. Both were youthful and beautiful.

Her complexion wasn't very good; she looked somewhat haggard, yellowish, and dry.

Three men followed behind, each armed. They kept looking back, and would fire if they saw anything amiss.

The first one to come out was a man in a black short-sleeved shirt with delicate features. Then came two more, one wearing a striped T-shirt and the other a blue T-shirt; one had a round face and a medium build, and the other was slightly tall and thin, both covered in sweat.

Each of them carried a large backpack and a large bag in their hand. They kept looking back, wondering what was happening behind them.

The zombies inside are howling and are about to come out.

The man outside saw their people come out and quickly went up to greet them.

He casually gestured for them to get in the car, but then went inside himself.

Despite being stopped by others, he pushed them away and rushed inside.

Then came the sound of gunfire from inside. After a series of footsteps, several people rushed out of the door—two men and one woman. Together with the one who had gone in and was guarding outside, there were four people who came out.

The people who came out later looked a bit more disheveled than those who came out earlier, their faces covered in sweat.

At this moment, Li Xiao was unsure whether to leave or not, and was hesitating.

The lean, burly man in camouflage who came out later told everyone to get in the car quickly, load up their things, and leave as soon as possible.

They had actually noticed that there was another person nearby, but the situation was urgent and they didn't ask any further questions.

The man waiting outside said something to the man in camouflage, then came over with a bag filled with something.

He handed her a bag and said, "This is for you."

Li Xiao stared at him blankly, but the man didn't seem inclined to say anything.

The man in camouflage noticed the situation and walked over to Li Xiao, saying, "Sorry, young lady, he's a man of few words. He meant to compensate you with this. He stopped you because he was afraid you had a team inside and would bring reinforcements." After saying this, he didn't say anything more.

Li Xiao now understood; they were just afraid she'd bring in others to share the spoils. The others went in to kill zombies, and those who came later would get the loot. What a load of rubbish! It's infuriating!

Li Xiao puffed out her cheeks, grabbed the bag, said nothing, turned around, got on her bike, and rode away.

In fact, she understood that the fact that the other person didn't kill her on the spot was because they were kind-hearted.

Now, killing someone isn't a big deal, and nobody cares. Even if you shouldn't have died, so what? Giving back the items in the end shows considerable principle. Let's leave it at that and move on.

I just picked a random place and decided to spend the night there.

The sun had already disappeared into the darkness, swallowing up all light.

She is currently in an apartment building, having dinner and listening to the radio.

Squeak—squeak—

Hoping the general public—citizens—hiss—hiss—quickly—hiss—rescue—hiss—

Rescue? What rescue? She ate her meal while her mind wandered, wondering if they would send someone to rescue her.

*Sizzle*—Sizzle—Multiple—Sizzle—survival bases have been established across the country, including the Kyoto base in the north, the Southern base in the south, the Northwest base in the west, and the Eastern base in the east. There are also other large, medium, and small survivor bases. Citizens are urged to visit them as soon as possible.

Multiple bases have been established across the country, and... [sizzle]... heading towards...

"It's a national base, located in Beijing," Li Xiao pondered. "Now all communication is cut off, we can't get in touch with anyone. The survivors must have gone to the base."

I should go look for them myself. If I don't go for a long time, won't they come looking for me? That would be too much trouble. It's much simpler for me to go myself.

Okay, let's go to the Beijing base. My uncle's family are all officials; they'll probably go to the base. It'll be easier to find them directly there.

She sipped her iced cola, trying to cool off from the heat. Sucking on the straw, she gazed at the distant buildings.

That must be the city center, with those towering, iconic buildings that are so eye-catching.

I should probably dress myself up a bit. The women I saw today, while their clothes were neat, didn't look too good. Their complexions were dry and sallow, like they hadn't been eating or sleeping well for a long time.

She touched her own fair and delicate skin, feeling its smooth and supple texture. It looked completely different, arousing suspicion.

Having both experienced the apocalypse, being too different makes one more likely to attract resentment. While I'm not afraid, it's still troublesome. You know, petty villains are hard to deal with, and women's thoughts are the most difficult to fathom.

Make sure you look your best before going out tomorrow; it will make it easier to integrate into society and live a fulfilling life.

After settling in for the night, I got up early the next morning and took out the cosmetics I had scavenged earlier, which came in handy.

Make yourself look darker and more haggard, let your bangs fall down to cover your face, and don't make your clothes too clean. These days, it's easy to get yourself clean, but getting dirty is a bit more difficult.

She pursed her lips, forced by circumstances.

I took a picture after it was done, and wow, I look like a completely different person! It's great.

I got a car and don't plan to stay in this city any longer; I'll head straight north. I'll collect as much gasoline as possible along the way, that should be enough for the car.

The city center is lined with high-rise buildings, just as it always has been: upscale office buildings, commercial centers, and banks.

The former prosperity is gone, leaving only empty shells standing there.

Cars were parked haphazardly on the road and on the curb. Trash cans and streetlights were overturned or leaning precariously. The ground and walls were covered in black or red grime, already rotten and stinking.

The flying scraps of paper and trash all speak volumes about the desolation of this city.
