They looked at each other. Li Xiao stood up, but her face was not visible in the dim darkness.
The people over there stood still. The two in front looked at each other, and one of them stepped forward and walked towards her.
"Hey, what are you doing here? Are you alone? I'm the team leader, my name is Liu Zhigang. They're all on our team." He introduced himself in just a few words.
"My name is Li Xiao, and I'm a college student," Li Xiao said somewhat nervously.
Liu Zhigang looked at her for a moment, "What are you doing here? It's so dangerous now, why did you run here?"
Li Xiao blinked, her brows furrowing slightly. "Where is safe now? Monsters are everywhere. I..." she said, her voice hoarse and distressed. "What are all of you planning to do? There are no supplies here."
People behind them saw them talking and gradually gathered around.
It was Liu Zhigang who spoke again, "We've all gathered together, preparing to head north. Let's rest here for the night and set off tomorrow."
Hearing this, Li Xiao raised her head, unconsciously twisting the hem of her clothes. "I... I'm also going north," she said, slightly embarrassed, glancing shyly at the person opposite her.
The man with Liu Zhigang laughed out loud upon hearing this, saying, "You're all alone here, you're probably heading out of the city." This made Li Xiao feel embarrassed.
"My name is Meng Yang. I'm going back to my hometown, and I'll come along with you," he said with a smile.
People behind her came up to greet her, some saying they were going home, others saying they were going the same way. Li Xiao stared at them wide-eyed. "Are you all going north?"
"Yes, that's right," Meng Yang replied.
"Alright, it's already dark. Let's finish eating and get some rest," Liu Zhigang said, ending the conversation. Everyone quieted down and went about their own business.
Some people took food out of their bags, some cleaned the area, and some took out blankets and quilts; no one was idle.
Only Li Xiao stood there, seemingly doing nothing.
A girl came over and asked her if she had anything to eat. Li Xiao looked at her blankly, not understanding what she meant. Was she asking her for something to eat?
She turned around to get her backpack, opened it, took out a bag of cookies, and handed it over.
The girl didn't take it, but just smiled and said, "I was asking if you have any. If you don't, I can give you a cookie. If you do, I won't give you any."
"Yes, I've already eaten. Thank you." Although it was just a bag of biscuits, it was incredibly precious in the apocalypse, where food and water were scarce.
Not everyone is willing to lend a helping hand to others unconditionally.
I took it out just now as a test. If they're only trying to take it, I'll be more careful next time.
I was thinking of finding someone to keep me company, and if I could do something convenient, I would. But if it went too far, I wouldn't bother.
Nobody's a sucker. Nobody's going to take something for nothing. At this point, everyone should look after themselves.
Everyone was eating, sitting on the cleaned-up ground. It was hot, so they could make do anywhere.
There were eight of them. Besides the three who had just spoken, there was a middle-aged couple, around fifty years old, not very tall, and slightly overweight. There was also a young man, around 20 years old, tall and thin. Finally, there was a mother and son; the child was about ten years old, a boy. The mother looked somewhat haggard, her shoulder-length short hair partially obscuring her face, making it difficult to see clearly.
Everyone sat in silence, seemingly exhausted. Only the girl occasionally glanced at her.
After they finished eating and cleaned up, the team leader waved to her. Li Xiao got up and walked over, and the girl made room for her to sit next to her.
Only then did everyone look at her.
"Well, we're all going up north for various reasons, and you're going too, right?" Seeing Li Xiao nod, the captain continued, "If you want to come with us, then leave with us tomorrow morning. We can look out for each other on the road."
Li Xiao smiled and nodded quickly.
This girl wears her heart on her sleeve.
The captain smiled and continued, "That's how we all get together, looking out for each other." "That's right, but at this time, there are some things that need to be clarified." He paused and looked at Li Xiao.
Li Xiao looked at him solemnly, pondering in her heart.
Seeing that Li Xiao was waiting for him to continue, he didn't delay and continued, "Along the way, this little bit of stuff won't be enough. We still need to collect supplies along the way." He looked into Li Xiao's eyes, "Everyone has to contribute. We can't expect to reap without sowing and enjoy the fruits of others' labor."
Li Xiao breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this; it was also her idea. "Yes, no problem," she said solemnly. Unexpectedly, everyone else laughed upon hearing this; this girl was really interesting.
The team leader suppressed his smile. "Okay, and also, we need to take turns keeping watch at night; it's not safe right now." "You just learned about it, so you don't need to keep watch tonight," Li Xiao nodded in agreement. Everyone participating would prevent conflicts.
"Okay, do you have anything to say?"
Li Xiao thought for a moment and said, "I'm heading north to the large base to find my relatives. They're waiting for me there." After saying that, she looked at the people opposite her. Seeing that they didn't have anything to say, she continued, "I'll help kill zombies. I've killed them before. I don't know much else. If you need anything, um, you can tell me. Thank you."
Everyone laughed. What a sweet little girl! She's innocent and easy to get along with.
Meng Yang was the first to wave his hand, saying, "No need, no need. You don't need to kill zombies. Just help collect supplies and carry things." The other men also smiled, seemingly agreeing with him.
