Chapter 23 Getting Along

After eating the hot noodle soup, I was covered in sweat.

The meal was simple; in the past, people might not have even glanced at it, but now it is a rare treat.

Li Xiao has everything in her spatial dimension, but she won't take it out. The spatial dimension is her secret; she won't tell anyone.

She didn't see anyone else had a space; maybe she will, perhaps, when someone else does.

But it certainly won't be now.

At worst, we could smuggle some supplies out while gathering them, but that depends on whether those people are worth it. Nothing else is possible.

The weather will only get hotter and hotter, and the temperature will only rise higher.

The temperature is very high during the day, so you can only travel when the sun is not too strong, and you have to find a place to rest when it gets dark.

Traveling in such hot weather can easily lead to heatstroke. We don't yet know what effects high temperatures and direct sunlight will have on people, so we can only try to avoid it as much as possible.

Everyone agreed, and that's how the decision was made.

It was high in the sky, so everyone rested until 2 PM before setting off again. Meng Yang said he'd been driving all afternoon, and Li Xiao had also been driving all morning and was quite tired.

Li Xiao readily agreed; she wouldn't have been able to hold on for so long if Tian Tian hadn't been there to keep her company.

At midday, the zombies weren't very active. The gate was closed, so there was no need to worry too much about them getting in.

Aunt Zhang and the other women told the men to go to sleep, saying they were fine and could stay and keep watch. The team leader thought it was a good idea and did as they were told.

Li Xiao and Tian Tian didn't need to go to bed either; they went to sleep as well.

It's almost July, and the weather is so hot that you can't hear a single cicada chirping. Even the flies have suddenly disappeared. This is unusual and strange; I wonder what will happen next.

Lost in thought, Li Xiao drifted off to sleep.

Li Xiao was woken up by the heat; the temperature was already over 30 degrees Celsius and was still rising.

She wiped her face, sat up, and saw that everyone else was still asleep. Aunt Zhang and Aunt Chen were still sitting there watching the door, and when they saw her sit up, they looked at her.

Aunt Zhang came over to look at her, probably thinking of asking her something, but she didn't say anything, she just shook her head.

I got up, walked over, and sat down next to them. I took out the water from my backpack and gulped it down; it was hot, and I was thirsty quickly.

She gestured for the two of them to go and rest, saying she would watch over things. They initially disagreed, but after Li Xiao's insistence, they went to rest. Li Xiao had only slept for an hour, and it wasn't even 2 a.m. yet, so she could rest a little longer.

After everyone got up and tidied up, they set off again. This time, Zheng Yongnian went to drive the van over there, while Meng Yang drove over here.

Li Xiao and Tian Tian sat in the back, leaving Meng Yang alone in the front. The two girls chatted in the back. However, Meng Yang didn't mind; girls usually like to laugh and joke around together.

The road is not easy to drive on, and you can often see cars stuck in the middle of the road, forcing people to stop and move their cars.

Li Xiao then realized that Uncle Li was actually very strong. He got out of the car and walked to the front, moving all the cars that could be moved aside, and pushing the ones that couldn't be moved to the side. He cleared the road just enough for one car to pass through.

Slowly, a path was cleared, and the car continued forward. She finally understood why Uncle Li and Aunt Zhang had gotten into the car in front; now she knew why.

Tian Tian told her that Uncle Li was a power-type esper. Then, fearing that Li Xiao wouldn't understand, she explained the concept of espers to her.

There are many types of superpowers, including natural ones, physical enhancement ones, sensory enhancement ones, and others.

Basically, there are the most natural-type superpowers, divided into metal, wood, water, fire, and earth; physical enhancement types, divided into strength enhancement, speed enhancement, hardness enhancement, limb enhancement, etc.; and sensory enhancement types, divided into sound enhancement, hearing enhancement, vision enhancement, taste enhancement, and smell enhancement. These are the ones that have been discovered so far.

There are also some more special and rare ones, such as lightning, wind, mental, dark, healing, and control types.

Li Xiaocai realized that there were so many kinds of superpowers, and that her own superpower should belong to the mental type.

You need to use your abilities frequently to level them up.

It's certain that you'll become more proficient with it the more you use it; I use maps frequently myself and have noticed that the map's scope has expanded.

It might be just like Tian Tian said, that you'll gradually improve as you get more skilled.

Tian Tian leaned closer, whispered in her ear, and then suddenly stopped talking halfway through her sentence.

When Tian Tian saw that she was looking at her, she smiled shyly and pursed her lips, and also looked in Meng Yang's direction.

Meng Yang had actually heard everything, and he laughed. "Actually, there's nothing that can't be said now. It's okay to talk about it." Hearing him say that, Tian Tian felt relieved and looked apologetically at Li Xiao. Li Xiao gave her a gentle smile, not taking it to heart.

People get to know each other better the longer they spend time together. They've only known each other for two days, so it's impossible for them to be completely open with each other. The fact that they don't reject her is already quite good.

She didn't mind Tian Tian's apology and simply laughed it off. Time would tell.

Seeing that she didn't mind at all, Tian Tian breathed a sigh of relief.

It's all my fault for speaking too quickly; thankfully nothing happened. Otherwise, Brother Meng might have scolded me. I'll remember not to be so reckless next time.

Suddenly, the car fell silent, which made people feel uneasy.

Li Xiao didn't know what to say, so she could only gently pat her shoulder.

Meng Yang suddenly spoke up from ahead, "We have to look forward. We're all on a thorny path. If you don't persevere, you'll only be overtaken and fall behind." He didn't turn around, but Li Xiao could imagine his expression—a face full of determination and forbearance.

Strong people don't need others to persuade them; they will straighten their spines on their own. Even in the worst storms, when the wind makes it hard for them to walk, they will still forge ahead against the wind and rain.

And that is indeed the case; he was a senior executive at a company.

People might say that even a senior manager is still a manager, not a very high position. However, he only applied for and worked for this company after his own company went bankrupt.

Starting as a regular employee, I worked my way up and, after three years, rose to my current position.

He started as a company owner, gradually learning and working his way up from entry-level positions in other companies. Diligence and hard work are his defining characteristics. His ability to withstand both highs and lows and still stand out from the crowd demonstrates that he is no ordinary person.

Such a person will never remain unknown; give him a platform, and he can soar to great heights.

Gazing at his back, he always stood so tall and straight, though a little thin. Yet, no matter the circumstances, he remained as upright and proud as a bamboo shoot.

Li Xiao laughed...
