Chapter 10 Sleeping Peacefully
When it was time to part, Chu De'an hugged Shen Xuewei and cried because he couldn't bear to leave her.
After being whipped twice on the buttocks by Chen Fangli with a thin bamboo stick, he released Shen Xuewei, covered his buttocks, and howled as he went to complain to Chu Fu.
Chen Fangli didn't chase after him, but only told Chen's grandfather and Shen Xuewei to be careful on the mountain path, and then watched them walk into the mountains.
After walking along a mountain path, Shen Xuewei's feet were already exhausted.
Her body is still only six years old, and she hasn't walked on such roads much before, so it really can't withstand such torment.
Seeing this, Grandpa Chen, who was focused on his journey, squatted down in front of Shen Xuewei and said, "Come on up."
Shen Xuewei hesitated for a moment, and when Grandpa Chen urged her again, she simply lay down on his back.
Grandpa Chen carried Shen Xuewei on his back, and placed the things he was carrying in Shen Xuewei's arms.
Grandpa Chen wasn't a talkative person, and Shen Xuewei and Grandpa Chen never really had anything in common. The two walked silently along the mountain path.
Just as she was lost in thought, Grandpa Chen suddenly said sternly, "Go to school. If you get bullied, go to the teacher. Study hard and go to university in the future, understand?"
His serious voice carried a barely perceptible hint of expectation, as if he were placing his hopes on her.
Shen Xuewei leaned against his back and nodded gently.
"Okay, Grandpa."
She spent six and a half years with her maternal grandparents in her previous life, and she knew what her grandfather's regrets were.
My maternal grandfather was a teacher who taught many students, but few of them went on to university.
Grandpa Chen had six children. His eldest daughter didn't do well in school and only finished primary school before giving up.
The second daughter barely finished junior high school, but her grades weren't good, so she didn't continue her studies. The same was true for the youngest daughter.
As for his two sons, the younger son barely finished junior high school, while the younger son went to a vocational school but didn't get into university.
Shen Xuewei remembered her maternal uncle, Chen Fangran, whose name she had only heard of.
I heard that her uncle was a very good student and went to high school. He consistently ranked at the top of his class and was once considered the hope of the whole family.
However, when the college entrance examination results came out, my uncle, who had performed exceptionally well, for some reason failed to even get into a junior college.
He himself did not believe the result and asked to have his test paper rechecked to see if there was a mistake in the score.
He had just come out of school when a group of thugs got into a fight and walked past him.
For some reason, he stabbed his uncle.
By the time they were taken to the hospital, he had already died from excessive blood loss.
Those thugs, being under fourteen years old and insisting it was an accident, were let off so easily.
Shen Xuewei had heard about this once when her maternal grandmother was drunk and heartbroken.
She had never met her maternal uncle, and people around her rarely mentioned him for fear of upsetting her maternal grandparents.
Although he is rarely mentioned, when someone does, they always look regretful.
She thought that her uncle must be a very, very good person.
But even the best person has passed away, leaving behind only countless tears for their loved ones.
The two returned home, and it gradually got dark.
With nothing to do at home and not wanting to play with Big Yellow, who had just eaten poop yesterday, she simply followed Grandpa Chen around.
Grandpa Chen led the ox to the cow pen with one hand.
While busy with other tasks, she also had to keep an eye on Shen Xuewei out of the corner of her eye to see if she had fallen or lost her way.
After taking in the cattle, we still need to feed the pigs at home.
There is currently only one old sow in the house.
The other two fat pigs were also raised; one was sold before the Lunar New Year, and the other was slaughtered during the Lunar New Year.
The sow is pregnant and will likely give birth in about a month.
The sow's pen was right next to the cowshed. When she saw Grandpa Chen appear, she started squealing.
Grandpa Chen carried the pig feed over and poured it into the pig trough for the pig to eat.
The Chen family had a total of four pigsties, two of which were located below the drying yard, but they had been abandoned and were no longer in use.
Besides the pigsty in front of us, there is another pigsty next to the path to the left of the Chen family's house.
After a while of busy work, Grandma Xi finished cooking and called the two of them home for dinner.
After dinner, it's time to prepare hot water for a shower.
The people here take a bath every day, regardless of whether it's cold or hot.
Even on the coldest days, if you really don't want to shower, you should at least wipe yourself down with a towel.
Grandma Xi carried water to the abandoned pigsty for Shen Xuewei, but Shen Xuewei refused her offer to help her take a bath.
Shivering, she finished her bath and quickly changed into clean clothes before going back to her room with her grandmother.
She slept with her maternal grandmother the previous two days, but after the two went to the market today, her maternal grandmother prepared her bed.
The old lady's room was very large, and there were already two beds in it, so they arranged for her to sleep in the same room as the old lady.
Although the Chen family's house was a mud-brick house, it had two floors.
The second floor was built with bamboo or wooden planks. Apart from a room that was specially partitioned off for Shen Xuewei's two uncles, the rest of the second floor was filled with grain and other things.
On the first floor, besides the rooms for Grandpa Chen and Grandma Xi, and the room where Shen Xuewei and her great-grandmother lived, there was only one other room.
That was her aunt Chen Fanglan's room.
Chen Fanglan has a somewhat domineering personality; even if she doesn't live in her room, she doesn't like others staying in it.
Therefore, even when she is not at home, the elderly couple will make a point of leaving her room open.
Shen Xuewei estimated that she would be able to see her aunt and two uncles in a few days.
Under the dim light, Shen Xuewei took out the notebook she had bought during the day.
After unlocking the notebook, she rummaged in the inside pocket of her coat and tucked the five hundred-yuan bills she had secretly kept into the notebook.
In the dim light, she carefully wrote down in her notebook some important times and events that she remembered in the years to come, events that could change her destiny and bring opportunities.
A bad pen is worse than a good memory; no matter how well you remember, there may be a day when you can't recall something.
Her memories of her past life are her cheat code and an opportunity for future success, which she absolutely cannot miss.
She scribbled furiously in her notebook.
After writing down everything I had memorized, I finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Grandpa Chen and Grandma Xi's room was right next to hers.
Grandma Xi and Grandpa Chen chatted for a long time, then dozed off and finally got ready to go to sleep.
A quick glance out of the corner of my eye revealed that the light was still on next door, so I called out loudly:
"Weiwei, it's getting late, turn off the lights and go to sleep. Children who sleep so late won't grow tall."
Shen Xuewei casually replied, "Okay. Grandma, I'll go to sleep right away!"
She closed the notebook, about to shut it, but then thought about it and felt a little uneasy.
After changing the password on the laptop, I locked it, put it back in my bag with peace of mind, and then reached out and tugged on the light cord on the pillar next to me.
With a "click," the dim yellow light went out.
Adults generally think that children don't have many secrets, and there aren't many places for her to hide things, so this is the only place she can hide these few bills.
Given her grandparents' personalities, they wouldn't open a locked notebook without permission.
She hugged her schoolbag and fell asleep peacefully.
