Chapter 9 The Walking Red Envelope
Shen Xuewei softly called out "Second Aunt," leaning affectionately against her and almost greedily inhaling her scent.
In her previous life, she lived at her second aunt's house for three and a half years. Her second aunt's family treated her very well and regarded her as their own child.
Most of the time, her aunt and uncle picked her up and dropped her off at school.
However, her second aunt and uncle died in a car accident when she was in the first year of junior high school.
She gripped Chen Fangli tightly, and tears finally streamed down her face.
"Second Aunt, I miss you so much!"
The two hugged each other, their eyes brimming with tears.
Chu De'an pounced on the two of them, smearing their faces with spit, and shouted, "Mom, sister, I missed you too!"
After being showered with his saliva, the two wiped away their tears and burst into laughter.
Chu Fu killed the chicken and bought fish to prepare a sumptuous lunch, which everyone enjoyed together.
After they finished eating, Chen Fangli led Shen Xuewei to the room that had been prepared for them.
"Weiwei, you'll be staying in this room from now on. If you need anything, remember to tell your second aunt, okay?"
A mattress was placed on the bed, and the mandarin duck quilt was thick and festive.
Shen Xuewei nodded and said, "I understand, Second Aunt. I'll tell you everything."
Chen Fangli affectionately pinched her nose, "That's the kind of Weiwei that your second aunt is doing."
Although the Chu family's house was only one story, it had four rooms in addition to the living room.
After lunch, everyone chatted for a while, and then Grandpa Chen wanted to take Shen Xuewei to the town market to buy things.
Upon learning this, Chen Fangli quickly went back to her room to change her clothes, slung a cloth bag over her shoulder, and then picked up Chu De'an and followed him out.
Chu Fu was still clearing away the dishes when he saw her dart out like a gust of wind. He chased after her, calling out:
"Ali, where are you going? Didn't you say you were going to work in the fields after dinner?"
Chen Fangli didn't even turn her head. "There's a market today, and we're missing a few things at home. I'll go to the market to buy some things first, and then I'll go to the fields tomorrow."
Chu Fu wanted to say something more, but Chen Fangli had already walked away.
He sighed and muttered, "I never knew he had such a fiery side..."
On the 1st, 4th, and 7th of each lunar month, it is market day in Mingda Town. On these days, the market in the town sells a wider variety of goods and products.
Chen Fangli, along with Chu De'an, followed Chen's maternal grandfather and boarded a minibus to town.
There weren't many people in the van yet, so the driver had to wait until it was full before driving off.
Seeing that Shen Xuewei looked distressed and frowned after getting into the car, Chen Fangli placed Chu De'an, whom she was holding, in her grandfather's arms.
She sat in the passenger seat and then let Shen Xuewei sit on her lap.
At a time like this, Shen Xuewei had no reason to be pretentious.
When a minivan like this picks up passengers, it gets crowded and smelly, so it's definitely better to sit in the front passenger seat.
She sat on Chen Fangli's lap, and after closing the car door, Chen Fangli rolled down the car window to let the outside wind in.
"How are you feeling? Are you feeling better?" she asked, looking down at him.
Shen Xuewei smiled sweetly, "Much better, thank you, Auntie."
Chen Fangli tucked her disheveled hair behind her ear and said reproachfully, "Don't thank me, why are you being so polite with your second aunt?"
The warm sun shone on her through the car window, and Shen Xuewei leaned against her, her breathing gradually becoming heavy as she drifted off to sleep.
When she was gently woken up, they had already arrived in town.
On market day, the town's market was much more lively than usual.
The group strolled around the market, but instead of buying anything, they took the two children and headed towards a nearby stationery and general store.
Several different children's backpacks were hanging on the wall outside the shop.
When the shop owner saw the group approaching, he greeted them, "Are you here to buy school bags for your kids? They're all here. Take a look and choose one. I'll pick one out for you to see."
Grandpa Chen glanced at the several schoolbags and immediately took a liking to a red one.
"Weiwei, look at this backpack, do you like it?"
Shen Xuewei looked up and saw a backpack on the wall, some green and some pink. Grandpa Chen had his eye on a red striped backpack.
She's not picky about anything now, and she doesn't care what kind of backpack she chooses, so she just nodded.
"like."
She said she liked it, and the shopkeeper just took the backpack off her shoulder.
"You guys have great taste! This backpack is my best-selling item; lots of little girls love it, and it's only thirty-five yuan..."
After taking the backpack off, Grandpa Chen looked around and told Shen Xuewei to carry it on her back.
After buying the backpack, I also needed to buy stationery, so I went straight into the store to buy them all at once.
Pencil case, notebooks, erasers, pencils, ballpoint pens, correction fluid...
I bought the items and put them directly into my backpack.
Shen Zhiwei, however, was drawn to a locked diary on the side.
She tugged at Grandpa Chen's sleeve, "Grandpa, I want to buy this diary."
Grandpa Chen followed her gaze, pondered for a moment, and then remained silent.
Unable to bear seeing Shen Xuewei disappointed, Chen Fangli picked up the diary that Shen Xuewei had her eye on.
"Okay, since Weiwei wants it, let's buy this diary. Boss, how much is it all in total? Please calculate the bill for us."
Grandpa Chen disagreed, saying, "Xiao Li, don't spoil her like that. She's only six years old and can't even write many words yet. What does she need a diary for?"
Chen Fangli had always listened to him, but after getting married, she gradually developed her own opinions and her attitude became more assertive.
She just smiled and said, "Isn't Weiwei about to start school? She'll need it when she starts school, so it's good to prepare in advance."
The boss shoved the numbers from the calculator in front of the two men.
"All the items together cost fifty-eight yuan and fifty cents."
Grandpa Chen rummaged through his pockets, trying to pay, but Chen Fangli, standing nearby, quickly handed over the money.
"Ali, take the money back right now! How can you use your money?"
Seeing that the shopkeeper had already accepted the money, Grandpa Chen simply handed the money in his hand directly to Chen Fangli.
Chen Fangli refused to accept it, saying, "Dad, it's bought, so it's bought. I'm your daughter, and Weiwei's second aunt. It's only right that I pay for it. Don't worry about it."
Grandpa Chen sighed, "Your life isn't easy either, so you should be more frugal and not spend money recklessly."
Chen Fangli had heard them say similar things many times before, so she simply nodded, took Chu De'an's hand in one hand and Shen Xuewei's hand in the other, and walked out. Grandpa Chen quickly followed.
After buying stationery, the group went to a clothing store next door and bought a set of clothes for each of the two children.
Chu De'an exclaimed happily, "I just got a new set of clothes for the New Year, and now I have new clothes to wear again after only ten days!"
In addition to a new outfit, Shen Xuewei also received a new pair of shoes.
From clothes to trousers to shoes, everything is festive red.
Shen Xuewei felt that her outfit made her look like a walking red envelope.
Grandpa Chen and Chen Fangli were clearly very pleased with her festive attire.
"It looks much better this way. It's only the New Year, it looks so nice."
The two decided to buy the clothes, and then bought some fruit and fish at the market before getting into the van to go home.
