Chapter 17 Need a Target
Only after going upstairs did Zhang Wei intuitively feel how big the castle was. She went up from the middle, and the rooms were distributed on both sides. In the dim light, she could not see the end at all.
Fortunately, her room was not far from the stairs. The three Namier brothers were on the right, and her room was opposite Manny's room on the left.
As soon as Zhang Wei opened the door, she smelled a faint musty smell. She touched the wardrobe and found no dust on it, which obviously had been cleaned.
The interior was indeed quite old, the pattern on the carpet was blurred, and you could hear the floorboard creaking when you stepped on it. The whole interior was dark in color, whether it was the dark brown wooden bed with carved pillars or the dark red curtains. The windows were not big enough to fill the room with light.
The only bright color in the room was the bedding, which was beige with small flowers. It looked out of tune with the whole room and looked like it was newly changed.
Betty was asking the maid to bring up the boxes. Zhang Wei watched her hang up her clothes in the closet and put her school supplies on the desk. The stool didn't quite fit, but she couldn't move it; it was too heavy...
It was another new place. Zhang Wei leaned on the window and looked out. This side was the backyard of the castle. There was a large lawn surrounded by tall trees. Suddenly, Zhang Wei saw something running on the grass.
It's a rabbit!
After she discovered the first one, she found the second, third, and fourth one... She couldn't count them anymore.
How come there are so many rabbits?!
Zhang Wei looked at the rabbits that ran, disappeared, and suddenly reappeared. He couldn't imagine how many rabbit holes there were under the lawn.
Looking at the ten-meter-wide moat downstairs, Zhang Wei had to admit that the person who built this castle was quite far-sighted, otherwise the foundation would probably have been drilled through by rabbits.
She finally understood why Namiel didn't want to go home...
Aunt Mary probably can't do anything about them. If they were in China, she could open a rabbit meat shop.
Hand-shredded rabbit, spicy rabbit head, roasted rabbit legs... Zhang Wei's mouth is watering just thinking about it.
"Gurgle" She was hungry, very hungry.
Zhang Wei felt that no matter how unpalatable Aunt Mary prepared for lunch today, she could finish it in one bite. The reason she couldn't eat before was because she wasn't hungry enough.
When this thought suddenly popped up in her mind, Zhang Wei was stunned. In just over a month, she had forgotten the feeling of hunger. Wouldn't it be long before she forgot her previous thoughts and willingly indulged in the comfortable living environment provided by the Wilson family, going with the flow and becoming an ordinary child?
No, she wants to be someone who can rely on herself, and doesn't want to be a "lucky" parasite.
Now that she was in a different situation, could her previous dream of attending a world-class Ivy League university finally come true? If she were lucky enough to achieve something, perhaps she could return to live in China?
Wow, Zhang Wei felt his blood boiling just thinking about it!
Yes, since she wants to live a different life, she might as well set her goals higher. Only with goals can there be motivation. Zhang Wei is full of energy at this time.
Even when lunch started, Zhang Wei sat at the long dining table, facing the serious Aunt Mary, still in high spirits.
Compared with the gorgeous dining table, lunch can be said to be relatively simple, with only mashed potatoes, boiled chicken and vegetable salad.
"These are all produced from the manor. Try them. If you want something else, have someone send it over from London later."
Zhang Wei looked at the pale food, and her appetite, which had just been aroused, dropped again. As she watched others prepare to eat, she noticed that Aunt Mary had something different. The outside was brown, and when cut, it was a little red. What kind of meat was it?
Looks much better than salt-boiled chicken...
Perhaps Zhang Wei's look was too obvious for Aunt Mary to ignore. She asked the servant to give her a piece, while Manny opposite her gave her a look that said "you're going to be in trouble".
"thank you!"
Zhang Wei looked around and found that the adults were hesitant to speak. She took a bite with trepidation, and the taste almost made her cry - it was smoked beef.
This was her favorite dish before. She had never eaten smoked products before college. One of her roommates in college was from Xiang City. She brought some to her and she was amazed by it. After she started working, she went to Xiang City to stock up a lot to eat slowly.
Zhang Wei chewed it slowly, it was really salty and fragrant, and he ate it all in one gulp along with the half plate of mashed potatoes that came with it.
Emma was originally going to help her take it away if she couldn't finish it, but he was stunned.
Only then did Zhang Wei notice their expressions. It seemed that they all thought this kind of heavy-tasting food was unpalatable, but what should she do if she still wanted to eat it?
She decided to take the initiative: "Aunt Mary, I want another piece of beef."
She forgot what word to use for "smoked". Well, she will have to memorize it when she gets home.
Aunt Mary glanced at her plate, as if a little surprised. She asked the servant to put a small plate in front of her and softened her tone:
"If you want to eat, just help yourself."
Zhang Wei then ate two more pieces of potatoes without touching the boiled chicken at all. He was finally full!
After eating, Manny came over to talk to him: "Don't you think the meat smells bad?"
"Yes, I remember it was bitter!" Namir added.
Zhang Wei answered seriously: "No, it's very fragrant and tastes good."
If pastrami tasted bad, then nothing in the world tasted good to her.
Thanks to the pastrami, she still has food to eat in England, but it's probably just Aunt Mary's favorite, no one else likes it.
In the afternoon, the Wilsons asked everyone if they wanted to go horseback riding. No one was interested. The two little boys only wanted to play with their eldest brother. Leida couldn't stay for long, so she took her two younger brothers to run around the manor.
Zhang Wei was full and didn't feel like moving. He walked around the moat and then listened to Betty telling stories.
Looking at Aunt Mary's attitude towards her, you can understand why Betty is a little afraid of her. She disdains Betty's failure to follow daily etiquette as a housekeeper. She will correct her when she sees it, and makes Betty avoid her.
Betty said that the castle and the surrounding estates cover a total of 600 acres, which were all inherited from old Mrs. Wilson to her daughter.
Of course, the Wilson family has two other castles, both of which were inherited by Mr. Wilson, Charles.
Now Betty is telling about Aunt Mary's experience:
“Although Mrs. Collins is a strange person, she is really pitiful.”
"Mr. Collins died in a sea accident right after they got engaged. Everyone advised her to forget about it, but she insisted on staying with Mr. Collins. This kind of feeling is really admirable!"
Betty knew that Zhang Wei often didn't understand what she said, so most of her conversations with Zhang Wei were simply confessions, and no response was required.
Zhang Wei treated it as a training for her listening and reading comprehension. Although she had gradually adapted to Betty's speaking speed and accent, she would not respond rashly to disrupt the atmosphere of Betty's confession.
