Chapter 18 About Rabbits
The temperature here is very comfortable. Although it looks gloomy, it hasn't rained. Zhang Wei took a nap and then sat in front of the window to memorize words.
Because the light in front of the window was good, the scenery outside the window was nice, and little rabbits often came into sight, Zhang Wei happily completed the day's goal ahead of schedule.
When she was about to write an essay about what she had seen and heard in the past two days, she heard Namier's joyful shouts. It seemed that their rabbit playground was officially launched.
When she finished writing down what she had seen and heard, the noise outside the window showed no signs of stopping, which made Zhang Wei a little eager to try something else.
She did what she said and immediately changed her pants and went downstairs.
"Hey! Vera! We don't have enough manpower, come here quickly!" Seeing her, Namir seemed to see the hope of success. He was guarding a cave entrance with a fierce look on his face, while Manny was guarding another cave entrance next to him with a serious expression.
The only one who was moving was Leida, who was poking something not far from his two younger brothers, hoping to drive the rabbit out of the hole.
Zhang Wei looked at the rabbit holes under her feet, which were almost everywhere. Some of the holes were so big that she had sunk one foot into them. With so many holes, what was the point of just blocking a few of them?
As if mocking the three brothers, rabbits kept flashing past the hole next to them, and they could only stare blankly...
With so many rabbits, it wouldn't be too difficult to catch them all. Zhang Wei had an idea. Just in case, she asked:
"Is this rabbit Aunt Mary's?"
Leida laughed out loud when she heard this: "Where did you hear that?"
Zhang Wei looked at Namier, although she also felt that no one would raise rabbits in the forest and grassland.
"Aunt Mary can't do anything about them. It's a pity she doesn't like outsiders coming in. There are more rabbits every year, but they're so hard to catch. I caught two last year, but they seem to be even more alert this year."
Leida couldn't do anything about them.
Although he said that, Zhang Wei still wanted to ask the owner what he thought. By then, would spicy rabbit heads, hand-shredded rabbits, and roasted rabbit legs be far behind?
"I'll go ask Aunt Mary!" Zhang Wei said and ran back to the castle.
Aunt Mary's room was on the first floor. Zhang Wei stopped at the door of her room and was about to knock when a voice came from the room:
"Come in"
When Zhang Wei entered, Aunt Mary was sitting by the window with her back to the door. She saw through the window that Leida and the others were forming a small circle, and it seemed that they were using a new method.
"Good day, Aunt Mary." Zhang Wei saluted as Betty taught him.
"What do you want from me?"
Although her back was facing away from her, she sounded in a good mood.
"I was thinking, um... could I go catch the rabbits in the garden?"
"Why not? Since you are already a member of the Wilson family, you have the right to do these things in the castle."
Zhang Wei could tell from her tone that she had some opinions about the Wilsons adopting her, but she didn't care much and continued to ask:
"I mean, is it okay even if I catch a lot? What if I catch them all?"
Hearing this, Aunt Mary turned her wheelchair around, her expression somewhat surprised but her tone full of disapproval:
"Vera, honesty and humility are essential qualities for a lady, even as a little girl."
"I understand, thank you for your teaching, but I think I have found a way to catch a lot of rabbits, but I need help." Zhang Wei said seriously.
Aunt Mary looked into Zhang Wei's eyes and found that the little girl's eyes were full of determination and confidence, which made her feel a little trustful, but she had her principles:
"I don't like outsiders coming in. Rabbits are not that easy to catch."
Zhang Wei felt sorry for the castle. If it was not maintained and repaired, in the near future no one would want to come and the castle would probably be abandoned.
"Aunt Mary, if we don't deal with these rabbits, who knows if they'll dig holes under the castle," Zhang Wei said, looking around the room again. "Such a beautiful house, are we going to let the rabbits live in it in the future?"
There are many paintings and photos in this room, all of which are of the same man, probably Aunt Mary's fiancé, Mr. Collins.
"If I'm gone, maybe it would be a good idea to let the rabbits live here."
Aunt Mary looked at one of the half-portraits, in which a man was looking ahead with a smile.
That's such a waste! Seeing her poor mental state, Zhang Wei wanted to persuade her, also for the rabbit.
"But if a rabbit lives here, who will remember that this is your place?"
"Then forget it. I'm not a glorious part of the Wilson family."
"What about this gentleman? He's a very good person, right? He'll be forgotten even if he does this!"
Aunt Mary's eyes seemed to come out of her memories and she asked back:
"Willn't everyone remember him if we don't leave this place to the rabbit?"
Zhang Wei immediately said confidently, "Of course! If such a beautiful castle had always been inhabited, everyone who lived here would want to know the experiences of its previous owners. That way, your story would continue to be passed down."
Aunt Mary was attracted by her idea for a moment. She thought about it seriously and found that it was indeed feasible. If everyone knew that she had been waiting for someone for decades, they would definitely think how outstanding he was. She would not have to worry that no one would remember him after she left this world.
Seeing the little girl still waiting in front of her, she waved and said, her tone softer than ever before:
"Come here, you're such a smart girl!"
Then he took her by the hand and turned to look out the window. Seeing the three embarrassed brothers, he smiled and said:
"Let's talk about how to catch all the rabbits. I don't think you are as rough and clumsy as them."
"Can I ask someone for help?" Zhang Wei immediately took action.
"It's better not to let outsiders in." Although she compromised, she still couldn't change her principles immediately.
"No need to call outsiders, we are all here together. We have Betty, the old housekeeper, dad, mom and brothers." Zhang Wei counted them one by one.
Aunt Mary saw that she was talking very logically, so she stopped asking questions. She also wanted to know if the girl could catch the rabbit, although she didn't hold out much hope:
"That's a lot of people to look at. I'll leave it to you, Vera."
"Okay, thank you for your trust!"
Zhang Wei almost ran when he went out. He was so happy. The rabbit catching competition was officially started!
She couldn't convince everyone of her method right away, but she came up with an idea, which was to hold a rabbit-catching competition. When everyone saw the results, they would agree with her approach.
She immediately found her three brothers and told them what she was thinking:
"I think we can have a competition, a rabbit catching competition, how about it?"
"Hey! That's a great idea, Vera! Come on, let's plan a formal competition together! Maybe we can continue it as a family activity!"
Leida was thinking very far ahead. Zhang Wei heard this and mourned for the rabbits around the castle...
