Zhou Meimei cried for a long time that night, but she wasn't crying entirely because of what had happened during the day.
During the meal, Zhou Meimei suddenly asked, "By the way, Xu Yibai, why didn't you go to work at the store this weekend?"
Zhou Sui then remembered that Xu Yibai had asked for a day off for her on Friday, saying he wanted to go home.
Xu Yibai's hometown is three or four hours away from the city by car, and after getting off the car, you still have to walk a distance. How could one day be enough time for that?
Zhou Sui considerately granted him two days off, as long as he came back to work on Monday, since he was supposed to go back to school anyway.
But seeing that he appeared in the city at noon today, he probably got up before dawn to catch the bus so he could get back to the store to work as soon as possible.
Xu Yibai felt a little guilty for not being able to go to work, "Otherwise, there would be a lot of people needing food delivery on the weekend."
Some students are indeed lazy on weekends and don't want to go out. They just call the store in groups of three or five to order food. Xu Yibai spends most of his weekends at the store.
When he has orders, he delivers them; when he doesn't, he sits in a corner reading or writing. He almost never leaves his military green backpack behind.
It was filled with his articles, essays, and scattered sentences.
"It's alright, I'm not afraid even as the boss, so don't feel guilty." Zhou Sui knew what he was feeling guilty about. In order to help Xu Yibai as much as possible, Zhou Sui had refused other students from the school who came to apply for delivery jobs.
As things stand, Xu Yibai can manage on his own. If there's another person, his wages will be divided up.
Even though he had to take the weekend off, Zhou Sui didn't think about finding someone to replace him.
"Oh, right, I brought you some food from home." He took off the military green backpack he was carrying on his back and pulled out an aluminum box from it.
"These are green rice dumplings made by my wife. They're especially delicious. I brought several boxes with me. Let's eat them first, and we'll share them with them at the store tomorrow."
Once the lid is opened, neatly arranged, bouncy, light green meatballs are revealed inside.
Zhou Meimei and Zhou Sui were dumbfounded at the sight of the dumpling, which was the size of a baby's fist.
Xu Yibai thought they were worried that the food wouldn't taste good, so he explained, "Don't let its ordinary appearance fool you, it's not anything expensive, but it's really delicious. Try it, and if you don't like it, just put it back."
Having received so much care from everyone over the years, Xu Yibai didn't know how to thank them, so he just wanted to let them taste the delicious food brought from home.
Zhou Meimei blinked, mechanically looking up at Xu Yibai, "Who did you just say made this?"
"My wife made it." Xu Yibai placed the box on the table, a hint of pride on his face, and a touch of warmth in his eyes.
Zhou Sui also snapped out of his daze. "You're married?!" No, he's still a student.
That's not right either. It's not unusual for students to get married at that time, because people generally get married earlier nowadays.
“Yeah.” Xu Yibai was unusually shy. “She grew up in my family since she was little. It was an arranged marriage. We got our marriage certificate when I went to university. I was planning to wait until I graduated and started earning money before having a wedding.”
"I think the weddings that people in the city organize are pretty good." As he said this, a look of longing appeared in his eyes.
Zhou Sui swallowed hard, then looked at Zhou Meimei. She knew what Zhou Meimei was thinking and wondered what Zhou Meimei thought of these things.
What else could she feel? Zhou Meimei felt as if her heart had been dealt another heavy blow, and tears streamed down her face like a flood that had been released.
"Oh God, why am I so miserable?" Zhou Meimei burst into tears.
Xu Yibai was startled, looking blankly at Zhou Meimei and then at Zhou Sui, "What's wrong with her?"
Weren't we just talking about our own affairs? Why is Zhou Meimei suddenly crying again, and even more intensely than before, heartbreakingly?
Zhou Sui was afraid that Zhou Meimei might say something reckless at this moment, which would make things really awkward between her and Xu Yibai.
She quickly replied, "Maybe they haven't recovered from what happened today."
"You should go back first. If you get back late, your school will be locked up." It seems that sending Xu Yibai away is the right thing to do.
But he was still a little worried. "Why don't we take Assistant Zhou home first?"
Zhou Meimei was sobbing uncontrollably, and Zhou Sui wanted to push her away as soon as possible. "No need, it's only a few minutes from where we're eating to where we're staying. You really don't need to worry about us, go back quickly."
After Zhou Sui's repeated urging, Xu Yibai finally left, but he left behind the box of green rice dumplings that his wife had made by hand.
Before leaving, he said, "I'll have a dumpling after Zhou Dianzhu calms down a bit. Whenever I'm in a bad mood, eating my wife's cooking always cheers me up."
Zhou Meimei cried even louder, and Zhou Sui waved at him directly, saying, "You should leave now."
If they don't leave soon, Zhou Meimei's tears will drown her.
After Xu Yibai left for a while, Zhou Meimei finally stopped crying.
But I feel terrible inside. "Sui Sui, why is it so hard for me? I like this one, but she already has someone she likes. I like that one, but she's going to be my wife. Am I some kind of heinous villain?"
"No, no, our Xiaomei is the bravest, smartest and kindest person." Zhou Sui comforted her by patting her back. "Don't worry, it's just that our time hasn't come yet."
