As they were talking, the sound of a car came from outside. A moment later, Zhang Cui and Zhou Peng walked in, neither of them looking too good.
Grandma Zhou went up and asked, "What happened?"
"The young lady didn't like our child?"
Zhang Cui's expression immediately turned strange, and she retorted, "My son is so outstanding, how could I possibly look down on him?"
When Grandma Zhou heard this, she thought, "Oh, so you've taken a liking to this? That's a good thing!"
"Then what about you two?" Old Mrs. Zhou didn't understand why the two of them looked like that.
Zhou Peng glanced at his mother and whispered, "Mom, don't be too angry. Don't take it to heart."
"What exactly happened?" Old Mrs. Zhou was extremely anxious.
Finally, Zhang Cui drank a glass of water before revealing what had happened.
The girl Zhou Peng was set up with was a friend she met through business. This friend was from out of town and had only settled in the city in recent years. When talking about her daughter, she said she was perfect in every way.
Good-looking, good-natured, a good person.
“She can work, manage the household, and is educated. I thought she was a great girl, and she would get along with Zhou Peng in every way.”
Zhou Sui initially thought that the other party was exaggerating their daughter's abilities, and that Zhang Cui was angry because she saw that her daughter wasn't as good as she claimed. But that wasn't actually the case.
“That girl is about the same age as Sui Sui, and she already has a three-year-old child.” This is what made Zhang Cui angry.
Old Mrs. Zhou immediately cursed, "Damn it, why didn't you say so in the first place? If you had said so, no matter how good this girl is, our child wouldn't have gone with her."
"She brought her child to a blind date?" Zhou Sui asked, then thought it was a bit impossible. Since she hadn't planned to tell anyone in the first place, she was naturally going to keep it a secret.
Zhou Peng shook his head. "We had all finished eating and were about to come back when my mom remembered that she hadn't finished giving the gifts she bought for them, so she went back and gave them the gifts."
"I happened to run into that girl holding a child, and the child was crying and calling for his mother in her arms."
He had actually noticed the child while they were eating at the restaurant, but they were quite far apart. A middle-aged woman was with her, and they had ordered a lot of food, and there were also many toys on the table.
The child who was supposed to eat didn't eat anything; he just played there. Zhou Peng saw this by chance when he went to the toilet.
“They were terrified when they saw us turn back, and the girl hurriedly put the child into my friend’s arms.”
“My friend was holding the baby while explaining to me that this was her child. Isn’t that just lying through her teeth?”
"That child must have been separated from his mother for a long time. He kept crying and begging for his mother to hold him. His voice was hoarse from crying. I felt sorry for him. His grandmother was unwilling to let go of the child and give him to her daughter."
"They were still there, trying to coax the child by saying 'Mommy's here, Mommy's here,' it was infuriating."
"In the end, the girl couldn't stand it anymore and took the child back. The child clung to her neck and wouldn't let go."
Zhang Cui's face was filled with complex emotions; on one hand, she felt sorry for the child, and on the other hand, she was angry at herself for being deceived.
Thankfully, I saw it on this trip back; otherwise, I don't know how long I would have been kept in the dark.
Not only did they find a wife for their son, but they also gained a grandson for free. It's enough to make people laugh to death if word gets out.
Seeing that she was still angry with a long face, Zhou Peng advised again, "Mom, don't take it to heart. Anyway, I don't like that girl."
Zhang Cui was naturally furious. "I treated her as a friend, and it turns out she's been trying to trick me in a roundabout way. No way, I can't swallow this. I'm going to call my other friends and warn them to be careful of this family."
Now the family doesn't care about the 80 cents phone bill anymore. As long as Zhang Cui can calm down, they can make the call.
After hearing this, Grandma Zhou first grumbled and cursed, then became worried, "You must know a lot of people working outside, but you haven't met anyone you like in our village, nor have you met anyone in the city?"
She was really worried about her eldest grandson. He was already twenty-five and didn't know how to win a girl's heart. How was he going to find a wife?
"Grandma, I'm busy all day, how can I have time to do those things?" Zhou Peng was indeed busy, managing his factory and taking various courses. Coupled with his slow-witted personality, even if a girl took the initiative to show interest in him, it would be a disaster because of his slow reaction.
"Oh, you two," Grandma Zhou sighed as she looked at the two of them. "Grandma has nothing to do at home now. Can't you spare some of your energy from making money in business and get married sooner? Grandma will still have the energy to help you take care of your children."
Seeing that the usual marriage-urging rhetoric was about to start, Zhou Sui immediately changed the subject, saying, "How can I have nothing to do?"
"Grandma, I'm planning to open a small shop for you at home."
"Huh? A small shop?" Grandma Zhou thought for a moment. "You mean a convenience store, right?"
Zhou Sui nodded repeatedly, "Yes, that's it. The ones in our village are all too small, and they only sell snacks and such, they don't have a full range of products."
"Yes, our old house is empty, isn't it? Tomorrow I'll take them to tidy it up and install some shelves. Sui Sui and I will make a couple of trips, and this little shop will be open for you."
Zhou Peng didn't want to hear about being pressured to get married, so he went along with Zhou Sui's words.
They had discussed this matter before. Now neither family farms anymore. Even Grandma Zhou only farms the nearby land, as long as there are fresh vegetables to eat at home.
Even so, they couldn't finish all the food, because there were only a few people at home on weekends. From Monday to Friday, it was basically Zhang Cui and Zhou Dawu who came back to sleep at night, while Zhou Dayong and Li Qiuju didn't come back very often.
