Chapter 3: I just hope she won't suffer anymore.

Zhou Sui took a deep breath and then slowly exhaled to calm herself down.

Zhou Dayong wasn't like this before. Although he wasn't extremely considerate, he had a harmonious relationship with Li Qiuju and they discussed things together.

However, he injured his leg while working in the mine two years ago, which left him with a chronic condition. He still walks with a limp on his left leg.

After resting at home for more than half a year, he went out to look for work, but many places wouldn't hire him because of his leg. He also suffered a lot of scorn because of his leg, and he became visibly unhappy.

But he silently endured all of this in order to make a living.

In the end, he could only work at a brick factory in a nearby village, firing bricks in the high temperatures. Although it was hard and tiring and the wages were low, the brick factory was willing to hire him.

After working at the brick factory for over a year, which is about two months ago, Zhou Dayong started drinking heavily. He came home drunk several times, and Li Qiuju couldn't help but grumble about it.

At first, the two only exchanged a few words, but later, for some reason, Zhou Dayong started to hit him.

The time he took action, everyone in the Zhou family was stunned, because in everyone's mind, Zhou Dayong was not that kind of person.

Including this time, this should be the third time Zhou Dayong has attacked Li Qiuju.

The first two times it was all pushing and shoving, but this time they all raised their hands.

Zhou Sui clenched her fists secretly. She was determined to find a way to cure Zhou Dayong's bad habit and prevent him from making the same mistake again.

But what method is the most effective?

Zhou Sui didn't know when she fell asleep, but when she woke up again, Li Qiuju next to her had already gotten up.

A few scattered voices came from the courtyard. Zhou Sui propped herself up on her elbows and lifted a corner of the curtain to look outside.

Li Qiuju was sweeping the floor when Zhou Dayong followed beside her, talking to her. Li Qiuju initially ignored him, but Zhou Dayong kept talking.

Finally, Zhou Dayong took the broom from Li Qiuju and began sweeping diligently.

Zhou Sui could still clearly hear his shout, "Go back to your room and rest. I'll sweep the floor, and you don't need to worry about the kitchen. I'll cook. It's a good time to rest and go home. I'll make something delicious for you and your daughter to try."

Zhou Sui didn't know what Li Qiuju said, but she noticed that Li Qiuju's expression remained indifferent, and she didn't give Zhou Dayong a friendly look.

That's good. It's worth what I said yesterday. I don't expect my mother to wake up all at once, I just hope she won't suffer anymore.

Zhou Sui lowered the curtain, quickly dressed, got up, and went out. She was a diligent person, and once she woke up, she naturally wouldn't stay in bed.

"Our daughter's awake." Zhou Dayong turned around at the sound of the door opening, a smile spreading across his square face. "Are you still feeling unwell?"

With that familiar voice and face right in front of her, Zhou Sui forced back the emotions welling up in her heart. "Dad, you drank too much again last night!"

"Ah, that." Zhou Dayong scratched his head awkwardly. After sobering up today, he remembered what happened last night and his face was full of guilt and regret.

"Dad couldn't help but drink too much last night, and he apologized to your mom as soon as he got up this morning."

Zhou Dayong was woken up by the noise in the morning. When he woke up, he was stunned to find himself lying sprawled out in the yard. Later, he slowly recalled what had happened the night before and realized that he was in the wrong.

He didn't dare ask why he was sleeping in the yard, and when he saw Li Qiuju working, he would eagerly take over the work from her.

Unfortunately, Li Qiuju ignored him, seemingly harboring resentment.

Now his daughter brings up this matter as soon as she wakes up, and he feels a little embarrassed.

“You apologized, but my mom didn’t say she forgave you.” Zhou Sui didn’t know what her soft-hearted mother was thinking, but she blocked her way out for now.

Zhou Dayong looked at Li Qiuju, but the latter avoided her gaze and turned to Zhou Sui, saying, "Sui Sui, there's water boiling in the kitchen, go wash up first."

The mother and daughter walked towards the kitchen. Zhou Dayong hesitated for a moment but did not follow, continuing to work without stopping.

After breakfast, Li Qiuju was going to the fields. The crops had already been harvested, and now she just needed to clear away the withered weeds.

Unsurprisingly, Zhou Dayong went along as well. Zhou Sui originally wanted to go too, but Li Qiuju didn't let her.

"The place we're going to today involves hiking. You're only just starting to feel better, so don't go and overexert yourself."

"We probably won't be back for lunch either. Go and gather some pig feed and cook the pig and chicken feed later."

These are tasks that Zhou Sui often does.

Zhou Dayong, who was carrying a basket on his back, happened to hear this. He frowned in disapproval, "Sui Sui has just recovered. She shouldn't go out and get any wind. She should stay at home. I'll be quick and gather some pig feed for her later."

Older generations seem to have this idea: a cold is caused by wind and cold entering the body, and if you don't get wind, you'll be fine.

Zhou Dayong felt sorry for his daughter and didn't want her to do any work.

"I'm fine, you two go ahead, leave the things at home to me." After seeing the two off, Zhou Sui put on her apron and started washing the dishes and clothes.

Looking back at the clothes I wear now, I can't help but feel they're a bit childish—colorful and flashy.

Zhou Sui decided to put all these clothes away from now on, keeping only a few simple and timeless pieces.

Before long, the clothesline in the courtyard was full of clothes. Zhou Sui had washed everything that needed washing at home, and her palms were white from being soaked in water.

After finishing her work, Zhou Sui wiped the sweat from her forehead and turned to look at her own courtyard.

The Zhou family's house was similar to most houses in the village, a self-built bungalow. Originally, there were two rooms in the courtyard. Later, when Zhou Sui and her younger brother Zhou Xu grew up, Zhou Dayong brought back bricks himself, knocked down the wall of one of the rooms, and expanded it into two rooms.

Looking at the house, Zhou Sui suddenly remembered something. About three years later, in 1993, a developer took a liking to a piece of land in the town, bought all the houses on that land, and demolished and rebuilt them.

At that time, people didn't know the term "demolition relocation household," but later, many people became rich overnight because of demolition relocation.

If she had money, she would also like to take a shortcut and buy the house in town first, then wait for the developer to come and buy the house. This would also be a way to make money.

It seems that she has too many things she wants to do after being reborn. She can't rush it; she has to think them through one by one.

With a heavy heart, Zhou Sui shouldered a bamboo basket, took a sickle, and went out.

Gathering pig feed usually takes place on the ridges of fields or on hillsides. At this time of year, the fields are full of people working, so going there would inevitably involve talking to others. Zhou Sui, who wanted peace and quiet, chose to go to the hillside instead.

"Oops!" Zhou Sui, who was deep in thought, didn't notice and bumped into someone running towards her.
