Chapter 9 Sharing a Bed
In order to wait for definite news, Yan Jinyue waited at the Prince of Yan's residence until evening.
As the sun set, the scouts Yan Cang sent out returned, bringing news that shattered Yan Jin Yue's last remaining hope.
Pei Yi'an did indeed have a woman by his side who took great care of him, named Tang Beixuan, who was said to have saved Pei Yi'an's life on the battlefield.
Pei Yi'an took pity on her loneliness and brought her back to be cared for as family.
"Take care of her like family?" Yan Jinyue sneered. "I'm afraid she'd already be taking care of her in bed by now."
Chu Yunjin knew that Yan Jinyue was upset and was about to comfort her that it was better to end the pain sooner rather than later, but Yan Jinyue did not appreciate it at all. She snorted coldly and left the palace with her maid.
She needs to calm down.
The Emperor is still the Grand Marshal of the Army. With him around, no one dares to target Mother Consort because she was banished to the Cold Palace.
No one will dare to do it for at least the next couple of days.
She needs to go back and think carefully about how to deal with that bitch Pei Yi'an.
In the evening, Chu Yunjin, dressed in her nightgown, leaned against the headboard and read a book.
Of course, reading the book was just for show.
Before she transmigrated, she was just a lazy bum, with a stable job but just getting by, without much ambition or the spirit of lifelong learning.
In my spare time, the most cost-effective way to relax and have fun is to watch TV series and read novels.
Although she had accepted the fact that she had transmigrated into the book, she still felt it was unbelievable when she was alone.
Such a bizarre and absurd thing actually happened to her.
The ancient imperial system was very strict. She was afraid that if she made a mistake, it would bring disaster upon herself and the Chu family. She was even more worried that she would be seen as possessed by a demon and be burned at the stake to reveal her true form.
After waiting for a while, Yan Cang still hadn't arrived.
Chu Yunjin looked up at Adele, who was closest to her, and asked, "Why hasn't the Prince arrived yet?"
Adele glanced at her, her eyes seemingly surprised, and then respectfully replied, "Your Highness will not be staying here tonight."
Chu Yunjin was slightly taken aback.
Adele continued, "Before, it was the princess who kept resisting the prince, so the prince..."
"I understand." Chu Yunjin sighed softly. "Go and tell the Prince that I'm afraid to sleep alone, and that he should come back to rest as soon as he's done with his work."
Come back to rest?
Adele hadn't missed what she said, but she wanted to confirm it, worried that she might have misheard and caused irreparable consequences.
"Does Your Highness mean that His Highness should come here to rest after he finishes his work?" she asked cautiously, "with Your Highness?"
Chu Yunjin nodded: "Yes, husband and wife should sleep together."
Adele nodded: "Yes. This servant will go and invite the Prince right away."
Adele was the head maid of this house and also a first-class maid of the Prince's mansion.
When Chu Yunjin married into the family, she brought two maids with her. One was her own personal maid, Xiaowen, and the other was Taozhi, whom Yan Heng had placed beside her to relay messages.
Because Chu Yunjin kept causing trouble, threatening suicide every now and then, and even actually committed suicide once.
Yan Cang believed that the two women had not served their master well and had not protected him effectively, so he sent them to the servants' quarters and transferred a quiet but clever woman named Ade to serve them instead.
The other maids only need to follow Ade's instructions.
However, the original owner's ability to cause trouble only intensified with each passing day. She didn't care who served her in the room at all, often causing the maids unbearable suffering.
Chu Yunjin rubbed her temples.
The original owner's "great achievements" sounded just as resounding as Yan Cang's reputation on the battlefield.
Adele returned quickly.
"His Highness still has some official business to finish, he will come over when he is done," she said respectfully to Chu Yunjin. "Your Highness may go to sleep first."
Chu Yunjin nodded.
She lifted the covers and lay down.
The bed smells so good. It's something that noblewomen in ancient times enjoyed, but many people in modern times have never experienced—at least Chu Yunjin, who is a lazy bum, has never experienced it.
Every day, someone makes the bed in advance, someone takes care of the bath, someone serves the meals, and the bed is even scented.
Each of the jade bracelets and jewelry she wore was very expensive.
Although there are many inconveniences as well.
For example, there's no longer a way to watch TV series on your phone, and no more novels to read before bed.
She didn't know how to pass the long hours spent in her secluded inner chambers.
As Chu Yunjin pondered these thoughts, she drifted off to sleep.
Yan Cang returned late at night.
After taking a bath, he stood in front of the bed in a cloud-colored nightgown. Only one lamp was left on in the inner room. Under the dim light, he looked at the slender figure sleeping on the bed, his gaze slightly deep. Then, without saying a word, he lifted the covers and lay down on the bed.
The fatigue from a long day seemed to completely dissipate at this moment.
Yan Cang tried his best to relax his body and not be so tense, but suddenly he heard a faint groan.
He turned his head and saw Chu Yunjin, who was sleeping, gradually turning pale, with cold sweat seeping from her forehead: "No...no, Sixth Sister! Sixth Sister!"
She suddenly screamed and sat up abruptly, her face still showing shock.
Yan Cang sat up: "Did you have a nightmare?"
"Your Highness?" Chu Yunjin turned her head in surprise upon hearing the voice. "You're back?"
Seeing that she didn't show any disgust, Yan Cang slowly nodded: "Mm."
"I had a nightmare." Chu Yunjin threw herself into Yan Cang's arms, her voice still trembling. "I dreamt of the woman Pei Yi'an brought back... She came back pregnant, wanting to seize the position of the Pei family's matriarch. After I divorced the prince, my sixth sister was forced to marry into the Pei family. She didn't dare to quarrel with Pei Yi'an and could only endure the humiliation. But in the end... in the end, she was killed by Pei Yi'an and that woman, covered in blood, a double tragedy..."
Chu Yunjin trembled in his arms: "Your Highness."
Yan Cang gently patted her back: "It's okay, dreams are just dreams."
“No…it’s not fake…” Chu Yunjin slowly shook her head, her face as pale as paper. “That woman has a special identity; she’s a princess of an enemy country. Her marriage to Pei Yi’an was a conspiracy. She went into hiding to infiltrate the Yong Kingdom…”
She looked up at Yan Cang: "Your Highness, could you please send someone to investigate that woman's identity? If Ruomeng is really a fake, then consider it a false alarm, but... but what if she is real?"
Yan Cang looked down into her panicked eyes and nodded involuntarily: "Okay. I'll send someone to investigate tomorrow."
"Thank you, Your Highness." Chu Yunjin hugged him tightly, her voice still trembling slightly. "Your Highness is so kind."
