"It's so hot! Quick, carry her back to the tent to cool her down."
Half-asleep, Ruan Xianxian had a long nightmare.
One moment she's living a precarious life, manipulated and mired in darkness by the Ruan family, and the next she's busy in the modern world, pushed to the forefront by capital to make money for an orphanage...
A chubby, disgusting old man with sticky, filthy eyes reached out his filthy hand to a five-year-old child...
"No, don't touch them, I can make a lot of money."
Startled awake from her nightmare, Ruan Xianxian sat up, panting heavily, her pale, frail face soaked with cold sweat.
A pale white hand supported my forehead. Why am I dreaming again of those unbearable memories that I deliberately buried deep in my mind?
Her chapped lips twitched, and the darkness outside the tent crept in through the gaps, perfectly concealing the faint bitterness on her lips.
I wonder what will happen to the children in the orphanage who have lost their last bit of protection after her sudden death, this cash cow.
[Host, are you alright?]
Ruan Xianxian snapped out of her daze. "I'm not feeling well. My head is spinning. What's wrong with me?"
System 365: [Host, this is a high fever caused by excessive energy consumption. There are medicines in the store, buy them and take them quickly.]
You're only superficially attractive now, like a donkey dung ball with a shiny exterior. You can't continue like this until you've recovered from your chronic illness.
The system was calling her a "donkey dung beetle," but her small voice was unusually tense, revealing her helplessness and nervousness.
A panel popped up, listing various fever reducers. Ruan Xianxian bought a strong fever reducer and was about to get up to pour water and drink it when her weak feet had only taken one step when her hand touched something soft.
Looking down, he saw Chen Zhaodi curled up asleep beside him, her eyes closed. [What happened to her?]
After his eyes adjusted to the darkness, he glanced around the tent and asked, "Where's Mu Xia?"
365: [After you fell ill, you had diarrhea, and just started having another bout of vomiting and diarrhea. You should be in the outhouse right now.]
Okay! Chen Zhaodi probably has diarrhea, and the other one vomiting and having diarrhea is Mu Xia, who wasn't in the tent.
She lit the kerosene lamp, and in a conspicuous place inside the tent was a red thermos. She walked over and shook it; it was indeed full.
He then took out a teacup from his luggage, poured some hot water, and drank the medicine. He glanced at Chen Zhaodi, who was sleeping soundly, tucked her in, and lifted the tent flap.
Sure enough, Xiang Hongjun, with his loud voice, was standing outside the tent, urgently talking to another figure.
As night fell, Ruan Xianxian, who had turned her gaze away from the horizon, realized to herself that she had actually slept for a whole day.
Hearing the commotion behind them, the captain and Feng Bai turned around at the same time and breathed a sigh of relief when they saw Ruan Xianxian, who was still a little unsteady on her feet but was clearly getting better.
He strode towards the Red Army, his words of reprimand tinged with concern, and reached out a large hand to touch Ruan Xianxian's forehead, "Your fever hasn't gone down yet, why did you get up?"
"It's good that you woke up. The doctor checked you, and you took your medicine. I reckon if you hadn't woken up, we would have had to take you to the hospital for a shot."
Ruan Xianxian instinctively covered her bottom, and when she opened her mouth, her voice was extremely hoarse, "I'm sorry to have worried you."
The captain glared at her irritably, the scar on his face trembling. Anyone who didn't know better would think he was a bandit who had come down from the mountains to plunder.
“Go back and lie down and sweat it out. You don’t do any work every day, and you still pull this stunt on me when you’re working on the river.”
After saying that, she ignored her, walked back to Feng Bai, sighed, took out a crumpled cigarette case from her pocket, and handed him a cigarette.
“You see, these girls are new to the countryside and none of them are cut out for work. Should we let them go back first? If they stay any longer, they might lose half their lives.”
Feng Bai took the cigarette but didn't light it. He raised his eyes with a deep look in them and met Ruan Xianxian's gaze, who was also looking up at him from in front of the tent. A dark, gloomy light flashed in his eyes.
The woman's skin was already fair, and the serious illness she was suffering from made her already flawless face even more delicate, making her look pitiful and endearing.
"Poor thing?" Feng Bai shouted. A truly pitiful person wouldn't dare to be so nonchalant after killing someone.
Xiang Hongjun continued to ramble on, "I know you have your difficulties too. It's not easy to open a back door, and it's troublesome that everyone comes to you for help."
Feng Bai glanced at him sideways, "You already know, why did you say that?"
Xiang Hongjun wasn't annoyed. Judging from their voices, the two must be old acquaintances. "I won't make things difficult for you. I'll just change the jobs of these three troublesome guys."
He pointed to Dr. Wang, who was running all over the riverbank, and said, "Look how busy Old Wang is, he's practically running around like a headless chicken. It would be good to have these three go over and help him out."
Feng Bai neither said yes nor no. He stepped up to Ruan Xianxian, looked her up and down, and asked in a low, emotionless voice, "Can you still walk?"
Ruan Xianxian's heart skipped a beat; she was certain that this guy wanted to take advantage of her illness to kill her.
If the man's initial reaction to getting into Feng Bai's car was merely a test, then judging from the way he refused to let Huang Douya in, there must have been some progress in understanding the cause of the farm manager's death.
She's been identified as a suspect!
The fact that they weren't taken away for investigation is probably thanks to this heavy rain.
Now is the time to take advantage of her illness and get something out of her.
Just as he was about to refuse, Feng Bai turned his back and strode ahead to lead the way, saying, "If you can't walk, the captain can carry you here."
Ruan Xianxian and Xiang Hongjun exchanged glances. The former was calm, while the latter was bewildered and even urged her in a low voice, "Keep up! Do you want to keep carrying soil and filling bags?"
Ruan Xianxian resigned herself to following behind Feng Bai, not feeling afraid. Killing someone was like catching someone in the act of adultery; they wouldn't confess unless they were caught in bed with the perpetrator.
For every step Feng Bai takes, her calves have to take several.
He cursed the man in his heart, calling him a scoundrel. He said, "If you have long legs, why don't you walk slower? Sooner or later, I'll saw them off and donate them to people in need."
