"What are you talking about? What do you mean nothing's wrong?"
Upon hearing Li Haizhen's voice, Zhang Xuesong seemed to soften instantly, and he got up to let her sit down inside.
"She didn't say anything. I accidentally bumped into Comrade Song while getting something, and I've already apologized. She said it's nothing."
"So that's how it is! Brother Cedar, you should be more careful!"
"Yes, yes, it was my fault. Okay, eat it while it's still warm!"
"good!"
Li Haizhen was overjoyed to eat her favorite food, and the corners of her mouth never left her lips.
Jiang Xile watched Zhang Xuesong's actions from the side, but didn't feel that there was anything wrong with it.
It's good that he only shows affection to the person he loves; I just hope he can keep it up.
Jiang Xile also hopes that the carefree little girl can continue like this.
Li Haizhen, who was eating a steamed bun, felt Jiang Xile's gaze and went to greet him with a smile.
"Comrade Jiang, are you hungry? Would you like a steamed bun?"
"No need, thank you, I brought my own lunch!"
She took the dumplings she had packed earlier out of her handbag and placed them on the table.
"Wow, dumplings! Comrade Jiang's meals are pretty good!"
"Your meat buns are pretty good too!"
The two exchanged a smile and then turned their attention to the food.
Song Zhaodi glanced at the two of them enjoying their meal and felt a pang of envy. The meat smelled so good; she hadn't tasted anything like it in ages.
Looking at the man sitting opposite her, Song Zhaodi lowered her eyes and consciously did not move closer.
The train traveled for more than three hours, stopping to eat and explore, before finally entering the next station. After a brief five-minute stop, many more people squeezed onto the train.
This time, it wasn't just educated youth who got on the train; there were also ordinary people, men, women, the elderly, and children—all sorts of people.
The already crowded carriages were now packed to the brim, making it extremely difficult to even go to the toilet.
Jiang Xile touched her stomach, thankfully she hadn't drunk too much water today.
However, with more people comes more trouble, and before they knew it, it was afternoon, and many of the educated youth were preparing for their afternoon meal.
Jiang Xile and Li Haizhen were no exception. It was still summer, and things would spoil easily if left out for too long, so they naturally had to eat things that didn't keep well.
Li Haizhen and Zhang Xuesong were eating the same meat buns they had for breakfast. As soon as they were taken out, the aroma of meat wafted far and wide.
This caused the children in the carriage to start crying and fussing. The two of them felt a little embarrassed and decided to hurry up and fill their stomachs to quickly finish off these troublesome buns.
Unfortunately, despite their good intentions, there were always people eager to cause trouble.
"Comrade, I can tell you're a kind person just by looking at you. My grandson hasn't eaten all day. Could you give us a steamed bun?"
An elderly woman in her fifties, holding a toddler of three or four years old, approached and immediately spoke to Zhang Xuesong.
Zhang Xuesong and Li Haizhen each held a steamed bun in their hand, looking at each other with surprise, clearly not expecting anyone to ask for one directly.
"Excuse me, ma'am, these steamed buns are our lunch for this afternoon. If we give them to you, we won't have any left. Sorry!"
Zhang Xuesong is not a saint who will give alms to just anyone who comes along.
Moreover, even disregarding everything else, judging from the child's clothing alone, he didn't seem to be lacking in food or clothing; there wasn't even a single patch on his body.
After Zhang Xuesong finished speaking, he took a bite of the bun in his hand and nudged Li Haizhen, who was standing next to him in a daze, signaling her to finish eating quickly.
Upon receiving the signal, Li Haizhen couldn't wait to take a bite. Seeing that both buns had been bitten, the greedy child couldn't help but burst into tears.
"Ah... my steamed buns are all gone! They ate my steamed buns! Ah... Waaah..."
Not to mention how shocked Zhang Xuesong and Li Haizhen were, even Song Zhaodi and Jiang Xile couldn't help but widen their eyes. This child looked to be only three or four years old, but the way he spoke... was not at all like a child, which showed how fierce his family's discipline was.
Seeing her grandson crying, the old woman also got angry. Her face was no longer as obedient and pitiful as when she was begging for food, but instead had a domineering look on her face.
"You two young people have no respect for your elders! I already told you, my grandson wants to eat steamed buns..."
You even ate the last bun in your hand! You did it on purpose! I've never seen such bad young people; it's really too much!
Jiang Xile frowned upon hearing this. This old woman was truly shameless. Just because you said your grandson wanted to eat, does that mean she had to give it to him?
A meat bun would cost at least two cents plus an ounce of grain coupons at a state-run restaurant!
Does she expect everyone to hand over their lips just because she makes a sound? There's no such logic in the world.
Similarly, Jiang Xile was clearly not the only one with this idea.
Li Haizhen put down the half-eaten bun in her hand and wanted to rush up to argue with the person, but Zhang Xuesong held her firmly in her seat.
"Don't get into a fight with her. Just eat your food, I'll handle this!"
Li Haizhen tried her luck, but couldn't persuade Zhang Xuesong otherwise, so she had no choice but to stop.
"Then you mustn't be soft-hearted, you can't let them think you're easy to bully!"
Don't worry, it won't happen!
After calming down his agitated girlfriend, Zhang Xuesong glanced at the old woman expressionlessly.
The old lady wasn't afraid at all; she even squinted her eyes.
"What are you looking at? I'm wrong! You don't know how to respect your elders!"
