"What's for dinner?" Duoduo ran over and asked.
"I don't know, we'll eat whatever your Aunt Liu makes."
"Where's Mom?" Duoduo asked, a little unhappy, when she heard that her mother hadn't returned yet.
"Your Aunt Zhang took her out to play, I don't know where she went, let's go home first." Lu Feng took her hand and got into the car.
"Dad, your wife has run away, aren't you worried?" Duoduo said from the passenger seat. "Go find her, I miss her."
"Your Aunt Zhang can't possibly kidnap your mom, can she? She's been staying at home all these years, it's good for her to go out and about." Lu Feng fastened his seatbelt and said, "Didn't you complain that she's mean to you? She even hits you when you're doing your homework."
"But...but I miss her!" Duoduo choked up as she spoke, wiping away her tears with her sleeve.
"Oh dear, save those tears for your mom, she'll be so touched. Stop crying, you'll be back in a couple of days." Lu Feng said as he started the car and sped home.
Lu Feng never thought much of it. It's like some people always think that someone will never leave them in this lifetime. They think that the other person has only disappeared temporarily and may reappear in the next moment, just like before, nagging on and on, even to the point of being annoying.
At dinner time, Aunt Liu prepared the food, and the four of them sat around the table. Lu Feng picked up his bowl and chopsticks but felt that something was missing. He just couldn't get the food right.
"It's hot, I'll stop eating for now." Lu Feng stood up and asked Aunt Liu, "Did you get a call from home today?"
"No!" Aunt Liu replied.
"Zhou Ya, did you hear me?"
"No, my mom and I have been sitting in the living room the whole time. We didn't make a phone call!" Zhou Ya said with certainty.
"Be careful with your phone!"
As Lu Feng spoke, he walked to the front door. Grandpa Hong and his group of people were gathered together, chattering away. They exchanged a few words with Lu Feng, but he had no interest in saying anything more.
He kept glancing towards the alley entrance, feeling inexplicably restless. He turned around, went back home, and rummaged through drawers and cupboards looking for something.
"Mr. Lu, what are you looking for?" Zhou Ya asked.
"Are you out of cigarettes at home?"
"How long has it been since you last smoked? Let me go buy you some."
"I'll go by myself. It'll be a good opportunity to stretch my legs. Duoduo, stop watching cartoons and do your homework," Lu Feng instructed, then shuffled towards the convenience store at the alley entrance in his slippers.
He bought a pack of cigarettes, squatted at the entrance of the convenience store, lit one that was particularly pungent, and frowned as he stopped smoking, his eyes occasionally scanning his surroundings.
He didn't know what he was looking for, he just wanted to see that figure. As long as she was there, everything would be fine. In fact, even arguing seemed much more reassuring than the present.
There were many people playing cards in front of the convenience store, and shouts rose and fell. Lu Feng unconsciously walked a little further.
"This Zhang Fengxia is really something. Is this how you do things? She didn't even make a single phone call."
Lu Feng put his hands on his hips, took a deep drag on his cigarette, and muttered, "It's really inconvenient not having a phone or WeChat. If she had a cell phone, at least I could check her step count or something."
The sky had completely darkened, and a night breeze blew by, giving me goosebumps. It was already September, the height of summer was about to pass, and after National Day, it would be autumn again.
Lu Feng strode towards his house. Xiu'er was waiting at the door, carrying a basket of eggs. She said, "Mr. Lu, I brought you some farm eggs. These are from free-range chickens in the village."
"Thank you!"
"You're welcome. We're all neighbors. By the way, our family also signed a contract with your Golden Bee Logistics today. We wanted to cooperate with Yongchang Logistics before, but they didn't like it. From now on, we'll be your subordinates. Please take good care of us!" Xiu'er said politely.
"Just follow the contract. I won't be directly managing Golden Bee Logistics. You should go home and get some rest." Lu Feng sighed as he spoke, "Where did you run off to?"
"Are you looking for Xiaoyan?" Xiuer asked, puzzled. "Didn't she go to the hospital? Didn't you know?"
"What???" Lu Feng exclaimed, asking, "When did you go to the hospital? What happened?"
Seeing that Lu Feng didn't know, Xiu'er quickly stopped making noise. That day, she heard a commotion in the courtyard, so she opened the curtains and stood on the second floor to take a look. She happened to see a group of people carrying Jiang Xiaoyan to the hospital.
"It's nothing, I was just talking nonsense. I'll go back first." Xiu'er made a move to leave.
"Wait a minute!" Lu Feng called out to her, "What do you mean, 'go to the hospital'? When did you go?"
"I only glanced at it that day, and everyone was busy lifting it onto the car. I really don't know anything else. I'm going home now!" Xiu'er said, and hurried home.
