Lu Feng was stunned. One bad thought after another surfaced in his mind, but he didn't want to believe it. However, he couldn't give himself a reasonable explanation.
After entering the house, Duoduo was doing her homework at the table. She looked up at Lu Feng and asked, "Isn't Mom back yet?"
Lu Feng's heart tightened. He, who was usually calm and composed, didn't know how to answer her. He licked his dry lips and said, "I'll give you the day off. Go back to your room and sleep."
"The teacher will check it tomorrow," Duoduo said, looking at the notebook in her hand.
"Then let's go upstairs and write!" Lu Feng advised.
Duoduo took her notebook, pencil, and eraser upstairs. As she walked up the stairs, the little girl stopped and said sullenly, "I miss her."
"Alright, alright, go back inside. She'll be back in a few days. You can tell her in person." Lu Feng didn't even dare to look into her expectant eyes.
Duoduo went back to her room. Aunt Liu finished her work in the kitchen, took off her scarf, and prepared to go back to her room.
"Aunt Liu, wait a moment," Lu Feng said to her.
"Wha...what's wrong?" Aunt Liu asked evasively, "I'm a little sleepy."
“It won’t take much time.” Lu Feng looked at her and questioned, “Where exactly did Jiang Xiaoyan go?”
"You... went out to play? I can barely keep my eyes open. I'm going back to sleep now." Aunt Liu said, hurrying towards her bedroom.
"Stop right there!" Lu Feng roared, "I'm the head of this family. Don't I have the right to know what happened to her? Which hospital is she in? What exactly happened?"
Aunt Liu turned pale upon hearing this. Since things had come to this point, there was no point in hiding it any longer, so Aunt Liu had no choice but to tell the whole story.
Inside the hospital, Jiang Xiaoyan's complexion had improved considerably, but her eyes still lacked sparkle, while Zhang Fengxia, sitting next to her, appeared somewhat tired.
Throughout the day, Jiang Xiaoyan talked a lot, about how the matchmaker introduced the two of them, how they got married, and the long years of torment that followed. She had thought about ending her life more than once.
But as Lu Feng changed, she seemed to see the sun rise in her world, thinking that happiness would accompany her for the rest of her life. Little did she know that her rollercoaster life had just begun. Just as Jiang Xiaoyan herself said, she was the luckiest person in the world, but also the unluckiest.
This is what they mean by great ups and downs.
Jiang Xiaoyan told Zhang Fengxia about the prejudices in the village. Even with such strict family planning policies, some people still risked their lives to have sons, even if it meant incurring fines.
Even Jiang Xiaoyan could sense that her own mother had become somewhat impatient with her ever since Jiang Xiaohong gave birth to a son.
She began to feel panicked and insecure, unable to sleep through the night due to anxiety, and sometimes even experiencing auditory hallucinations, always feeling like someone was mocking her behind her back.
Not daring to face Lu Feng's parents, Jiang Xiaoyan broke down emotionally last Chinese New Year after asking a few questions about the child.
She was already pushed to her limit, and getting pregnant at this time was like a miracle for her.
"You've given me so much advice, talking about overseas countries and changing mindsets. I understand all of that, and I know those things exist, but they're so far removed from me." Jiang Xiaoyan took a deep breath, her eyes already red, and said, "I can't get over this. Others' forgiveness feels like a punishment. How can I face him? He has so many assets, yet I can't give him a child?"
Zhang Fengxia had always thought Jiang Xiaoyan was a woman from the countryside with a narrow-minded mindset, but after listening to what she said, and putting herself in her shoes, she realized that if she were Jiang Xiaoyan, she probably wouldn't be as good as her.
She couldn't escape the prejudice others held against her, but what she could escape even more was the prejudice she held against herself.
Lu Feng drove to the city hospital, ran to the front desk and asked, "Hello, I'd like to ask which ward Jiang Xiaoyan is in?"
"Which Jiang Xiaoyan? Which department is she in?" the nurse asked without looking up.
"I don't know whether it's gynecology or obstetrics. She was brought in while pregnant. Could you check her out for me?"
The nurse flipped through her notebook for a while before saying, "Fourth floor, room 403."
"Thank you!"
After Lu Feng finished speaking, he jogged up the stairs. Just as he reached the door of the ward, he heard Jiang Xiaoyan's voice inside. Lu Feng stood at the door, his hand on the doorknob.
"What am I supposed to do? How am I supposed to face him? No matter how thick-skinned or shameless I am, I can't just stay by his side and be a useless person!"
"He loves me, but what if he stops loving me one day? I have nothing, I live in constant fear, and now I don't even have a child. What am I going to do? Tell me, what am I going to do?"
Zhang Fengxia held her hand, unable to answer her question. The two family members complement each other. When one becomes excessively strong, the other will naturally feel insecure and afraid of losing her. Coupled with Jiang Xiaoyan's upbringing and psychological issues, she is now being pushed to the brink of collapse.
Lu Feng loosened his grip on the door as he was about to push it open. He sat down on a bench nearby, his mood somber. For so long, he had been obsessed with making money, his business growing bigger and bigger, and his staff increasing in number.
However, Lu Feng seemed to lack concern for Jiang Xiaoyan. He could sense that she really didn't want to have so much money. Firstly, she preferred a simple life and only needed enough money to get by. Secondly, the more money she had, the more inferior she felt.
