Seeing his unpleasant expression, Jiang Xiaoyan glared at him and walked over to whisper, "The New Year is just around the corner. We'll leave after the New Year. Just bear with it. That's how my parents are."
Lu Feng nodded in agreement. When it was time to eat, he carried Duo Duo upstairs, and the family began to eat. At the dinner table, Song Xuemei kept asking how much money Lu Feng had made, implying that the family was struggling financially and that her older brother had lost money in business, emptying the family's coffers.
The second brother saw that his family had given money to the eldest brother, and his wife drove him back home and made a scene, threatening to kill herself.
Lu Feng finally understood why Jiang Xiaoyan didn't want him to come back and say he had made a fortune. It was a hole that could never be filled. He understood that he should just accept the scolding and keep his head down without saying a word.
“Mom, I don’t have any money either. Last year I was almost starving, and my family didn’t help me at all,” Jiang Xiaoyan said.
"Your mother has raised you all these years, provided you with food and clothing, and even sent you to school, and this is how you talk to her?" Before Song Xuemei could speak, Jiang Xiaohong, who was standing to the side, spoke up sharply and meanly, "Is it your fault? You didn't sell yourself for a good price, so you deserve to starve to death. And you still want your parents to give you money? How dare they accept it?"
Lu Feng never imagined that a person's family of origin could be so terrible. He couldn't eat anymore and put his bowl and chopsticks on the table, immediately attracting everyone's attention.
Jiang Xiaoyan slapped his thigh and frantically gave him meaningful glances. Her father-in-law was already showing some menacing aura, and the whole family seemed poised to attack Lu Feng if he did anything slightly wrong.
Lu Feng cursed under his breath, then cowardly picked up the bowl again.
“I’m doing alright now. Lu Feng has reformed. He doesn’t gamble anymore and works in a factory. He’s just making ends meet. Mom, I had my reasons for not giving you a dowry back then. Without that money, I would have starved to death in the city long ago,” Jiang Xiaoyan said, sounding a little aggrieved.
“I’m not listening to your nonsense. What family doesn’t accept a penny when their daughter gets married? It’s a laughing stock. You can live or die as you please, it’s none of my business. I don’t want to be angry with you during the New Year. If you feel indebted, save up and give your second brother a thousand or two.”
One or two thousand?
For an ordinary family, this is no small sum; it's enough to buy a color TV.
Lu Feng already understood that her eldest brother had lost money and asked the family for more. When her second brother came back to ask for the money, he found it was gone. She asked Jiang Xiaoyan to make up for the lost money.
"Have you finished eating? Go wash the dishes. I'm going to the next room to take a nap with your dad." Song Xuemei said, putting on her shoes and leaving.
Jiang Xiaohong put down her chopsticks and said, "I was busy this morning, now it's your turn. And you, don't just come here and do nothing but eat. Go and take out the swill."
"Why are you talking to me like that...?"
"Go! Go!" Jiang Xiaoyan urged.
"Only Jiang Xiaoyan could be interested in this kind of person. He's lazy, good-for-nothing, and poor!" Jiang Xiaohong said as she sat down and turned on the TV.
