They didn't get home until the afternoon. Duoduo was already asleep from exhaustion, and Lu Feng was almost completely worn out. Jiang Xiaoyan, however, was still in high spirits. She picked up the phone and called the village store to confirm that she would be back the next day.
The next day, Lu Feng was dragged out of bed early again. At his most frustrated, he even wanted to find an electric wire to go back to his own past. Duo Duo was also tormented.
The father and daughter sat on the bed with messy hair and grumpy faces.
"Wash your face, eat, and go home. Hurry up!" Jiang Xiaoyan was as energetic as if she had been injected with chicken blood.
"We can't go back now. The roads are covered in snow and have been frozen all night. The cars are slippery. Let's leave after nine o'clock and get there by noon. It's not like we're going to another province." Lu Feng found an excuse to pick up Duo Duo and continue sleeping.
Lu Feng didn't get up until after nine o'clock in the morning to eat and wash his face. By the time he finished everything, it was already 9:30. Jiang Xiaoyan, sitting in the passenger seat, muttered that she shouldn't be too late to go home.
Jiang Xiaoyan's home is located in a town within a county under the city. It has a large population of 30,000 to 40,000 people, making it a very big town.
There are four children in her family: two older brothers and a younger sister who is 21 years old and no longer works outside the home.
Perhaps because she was the first daughter in the family, she did most of the housework, including laundry and cooking, which made her younger sister a bit spoiled.
Her mother mainly cuts hair, and her father farms and sells some agricultural products. Their life is neither good nor bad.
As the car entered the town, the group of people chatting there all looked up in their direction; some had already started heading home in the past few days.
Villagers love to compare themselves to others. They'll naturally talk about who dresses well and who's doing well, but it's definitely rare to see someone drive back.
"Who's this? Whose kid is he? So promising?"
"Could it be that kid from the second-rate family in the front yard? That kid's such a show-off, he probably hired a car."
"Impossible, it's not a county sign, it's from the neighboring city!"
"Look who it is, go say hello."
Lu Feng had already seen people walking towards him. Suddenly, he remembered a joke from later years and couldn't help but laugh. Imagine driving a luxury car back to the village, driving it into a ditch, preparing a pack of Zhonghua cigarettes for the whole village to help lift the car, and chatting along the way, inadvertently revealing how much the car cost.
He's starting to get a feel for it now; driving a Santana back to the village now is like driving a million-dollar luxury car back to the village in later years.
"Oh my, isn't this so-and-so? Jiang Ergou's daughter, Yanzi!" An uncle wearing a brand-new orange-peel jacket was shivering from the cold, but he still didn't zip it up.
"Really? Let's go take a look."
Lu Feng turned around with a smile and said, "My father-in-law has such an elegant nickname?"
"Shut up. If you dare call me that as soon as you come in, I won't even let you in the door." Jiang Xiaoyan muttered, then looked at the uncles and said, "Happy New Year, uncles! Did you have a good harvest this year?"
Lu Feng hurriedly picked up a cigarette from the side and began to offer it to others.
After exchanging pleasantries, Lu Feng started the car and drove into the alley. The ** family's yard was large, and the alley was exceptionally wide. Lu Feng parked the car, and the neighbors peered through the glass for a while, making sure it was Lu Feng and his family returning before they started gossiping.
A woman in her fifties came out. When she saw the car outside, she was stunned. Then she looked at Lu Feng and her face became even more furious.
Lu Feng had never been married in his previous life, so he didn't know how to start the conversation or call her "Mom".
Isn't that ridiculous?
Calling her "Auntie"? That's even more inappropriate.
"Let's go inside!" Song Xuemei said, carrying her things. When she saw how much stuff was in the trunk, her expression softened a little, and she walked back with her things.
Lu Feng didn't say much, and picked up his things to walk into the courtyard.
"Mom, who's here?" A pretty voice came from the courtyard.
"Go get something."
Then a girl who looked six or seven parts like Jiang Xiaoyan ran out. She had two pigtails, but she was obviously not as good as Jiang Xiaoyan. Her eyes were smaller, and she had a certain domineering feeling.
"Hmph!" The little girl snorted at Lu Feng, then looked at the car for more than ten seconds before taking her things and going into the yard.
"I haven't offended her, have I?" Lu Feng wondered, as if his whole family had a grudge against him.
Jiang Xiaoyan didn't say anything. Her younger sister, Jiang Xiaohong, had always liked to compare herself to her since they were little. The two were only two years apart. When they were little, Jiang Xiaohong would wear her clothes first and use her the best things. As for Lu Feng, she looked down on him from the bottom of her heart. She heard that he had found a rich man this year, and he became even more materialistic.
The courtyard was large, with six main rooms upstairs and three side rooms on the side. In the southeast corner, there was a local dog that barked at Lu Feng. There were also some chickens and ducks in the courtyard, making it look a bit messy.
A stove was burning in the room, making it warm as spring. A man in his fifties sat on the kang (a heated brick bed), his skin somewhat dark. He glanced at Lu Feng and leaned against the quilt without saying a word.
"Why are you only getting back now?" Song Xuemei said with some dissatisfaction. "It's already eleven o'clock. Didn't you say on the phone that you would be back by eight or nine o'clock? You didn't do any work, you just came back to eat for free."
“The road is difficult to walk on. I originally planned to leave in the morning, but Lu Feng said the road was slippery and we should thaw it first before leaving,” Jiang Xiaoyan explained.
"Where did you borrow this beat-up car from? You took a minibus this morning, transferred once, and came all this way, why did you drive back?" Jiang Ergou sat up straight and said, "People would think you're some big shot, what are you showing off for?"
Lu Feng's face was rather unpleasant. He had seen all sorts of situations, but he had never seen one like this. You can't hit someone who's smiling at you. His whole family had rushed back with lots of bags and packages, and he was still scolded.
