When Lu Wanling got home from get off work and opened her gate, she saw a scene that surprised her greatly.
In their own courtyard, Feng Haidong and his son Feng Qifan sat under the persimmon tree by the well, chatting and laughing as they trimmed and washed crayfish together.
This was a scene that Lu Wanling had almost never witnessed in all these years.
In Lu Wanling's memory, Feng Haidong and his son Feng Qifan seemed to have been at odds from the very beginning.
From childhood to adulthood, Feng Haidong has always been very strict with his son.
In Lu Wanling's memory, even her husband rarely smiled at their son.
Especially after his son started school, because his son's grades were never very good, Feng Haidong gave his son even less kindness.
Even more often, when their son doesn't do well on a test or gets into trouble at school, they will do so.
Although Feng Haidong would not physically hit his children, he was quite ruthless when scolding his son.
So before going home today, Lu Wanling was quite worried.
They worried that after Feng Haidong went to the school and met his son's homeroom teacher, he might get angry at his son on the spot, and then give him a severe scolding when he got home.
The scene before me now is of a father and son chatting and laughing together under the persimmon tree and by the well.
Lu Wanling could hardly believe her eyes.
After a moment of stunned silence, Lu Wanling was awakened by her son Feng Qifan's shouts.
"Mom, you're back."
Lu Wanling snapped out of her daze, looked at her son's smiling face, and then at the smile on her husband's face.
She smiled and said, "It seems you two got along very well today. You were chatting so happily. Is there anything good you can share with Mom?"
Feng Qifan picked up a crayfish and said, "The happy thing is that we have crayfish to eat today."
Lu Wanling laughed and said, "You really are a little foodie."
Feng Qifan continued, "Another happy thing is that my dad went to school today and helped me clarify the matter of breaking the tiles. Not only did I not have to pay compensation, but my homeroom teacher also apologized to me."
Hearing her son say this, Lu Wanling was quite surprised.
She looked at her husband incredulously and asked, "You went to school this afternoon without paying?"
Feng Haidong laughed and said, "No, our son did nothing wrong, why should I pay compensation?"
Lu Wanling asked curiously, "But at noon, didn't Xiaofan say that he and his classmates broke the tiles on the school corridor railing, so the teacher made them pay for it?"
Feng Qifan said, "Mom, I said at noon that we didn't break that tile, it fell down by itself, and Yao Baozhu's foot was hit."
At this point, Feng Qifan said with a hint of righteous indignation, "It was the homeroom teacher who insisted that the three of us were there at the time, so the broken tiles were our fault, and then he made the three of us split the cost of the damage."
Lu Wanling couldn't help but ask curiously, "So when Dad went to the school, why didn't he pay any money, and why did he even make your homeroom teacher apologize to you?"
Feng Haidong smiled as he stood up, carrying a crayfish whose heads had been trimmed, large claws removed, and shrimp veins removed.
"Okay, let your son tell you the details slowly. I'm going to cook."
Lu Wanling responded and watched as her husband carried the prepared crayfish into the kitchen, which surprised her once again.
Because Feng Haidong rarely took the initiative to cook in the past.
Today, Lu Wanling felt that something was wrong the more she looked at it.
However, Lu Wanling was soon drawn in by her son's account of school matters.
Feng Qifan didn't embellish much; he simply told his mother what he had seen.
Although her son's explanation wasn't complicated, Lu Wanling was still puzzled after listening to it.
The biggest question is, why did the principal happen to be passing by the door when the husband went to the teacher's office?
Lu Wanling could tell that if the principal hadn't been there, no matter what her husband said, her son's homeroom teacher probably wouldn't have given in so easily, let alone apologize to her son and his friends.
With her doubts in mind, Lu Wanling told her son to do his homework first, while she put down her bag, tied her hair up with a hair tie, put on an apron, and went into the kitchen.
She came up behind her husband and watched him stir-fry crayfish.
Lu Wanling leaned closer and asked, "Tell me honestly, what exactly happened? Why did the principal happen to be passing by when you went to the teacher's office?"
Upon hearing this, Feng Haidong smiled and asked, "Did your son tell you? He said the principal just happened to be passing by?"
Lu Wanling said, "Yes, that's what my son just said."
Feng Haidong said, "How could the principal just happen to be passing by? Actually, I went to the principal's office before going to the teachers' office and looked for the principal."
Lu Wanling was even more surprised: "You're going directly to the principal?"
Before her husband could reply, she continued, "You went directly to the principal over such a trivial matter?"
While stirring the crayfish in the pan, Feng Haidong said, "How can this be considered a small matter? It concerns my son's innocence. My son is only in the third grade, a flower of the motherland. How can he be falsely accused and burdened with unfounded stigma?"
After her husband said this so seriously, Lu Wanling was stunned for a while before nodding and saying, "You're absolutely right."
Lu Wanling continued, "My son is still a child. If he is falsely accused like this, he may really be unable to hold his head up at school in the future."
