Chapter 4 Rice for Firewood

Do you live alone?

"I also have a wife in my family."

"Why don't you call your wife over to help you?"

Xiong Er slapped his forehead: "Oh right, how could I forget? I'll go get my wife to help right away. Wait for me a moment, sir."

"Wait, wait."

Li Chang'an stopped him and said, "When you call people later, also call all the villagers on the mountain. Just tell them I want to trade grain for firewood."

Li Chang'an remembered Er Ya's words about winter approaching and decided to prepare more firewood.

Even with an unlimited supply of rice, you still need firewood to cook rice in winter; you can't just eat it raw.

Upon hearing the instructions, Xiong Er nodded and called out to his wife as he went.

Fortunately, they weren't far away, and after calling out a few times, Xiong Er heard a response.

Following the sound, I saw my wife with several other women from the village, gathering together to dig for wild vegetables. I quickly ran over and said...

"Cuihua, stop digging! Quick, quick, come with me and call the villagers over."

"What's wrong? Why are you making such a fuss?"

Cuihua watched her dog yelling and shouting, and was a little curious about what had happened.

"hey-hey"

Xiong Er chuckled and said, "It's that man from Linjia Village, the brother-in-law who suddenly appeared in Er Ya's family. He said he wanted to exchange grain for firewood. One load of firewood can be exchanged for fourteen catties of wheat bran."

"Ah, this, this must be a fool. What kind of firewood can be exchanged for fourteen catties of wheat bran? You're either lying to us, or you've been fooled by someone else."

The others chimed in, completely disbelieving that such a thing could happen.

When Xiong Er heard that they didn't believe him, he became so anxious that his face turned red and his neck bulged.

“How could I be fooled? I saw him take out a lot of white rice with my own eyes. That was the best quality grain. One pound of rice could easily be exchanged for seven or eight pounds of wheat bran. If you don’t believe me, come with me and see for yourself.”

"Alright, we'll go with you and take a look. It won't take much time anyway."

A group of people called on their friends and acquaintances, and soon a large crowd had gathered.

Xiong Er led them to Li Chang'an.

Li Chang'an sat imposingly on a tree stump, with a full bamboo basket of rice beside him. Er Ya looked at the rice and grinned foolishly.

Just now, Li Chang'an turned half a basket of rice into a full basket right in front of her.

Er Ya was dumbfounded. In her eyes, only the gods in heaven could conjure up so much food.

My brother-in-law is a god!

This discovery filled her with ecstasy.

It must be a deity, otherwise how could so much rice appear? My brother-in-law must be a deity sent down by God to save the three sisters.

Thinking of this, Er Ya hugged Li Chang'an tightly and refused to let go, looking at him with admiration in her eyes.

The villagers who emerged from the forest were astonished by the full basket of rice, and they all gasped in surprise.

My God, what is this?

The white rice filled a bamboo basket to the brim, some of it even spilling onto the ground.

The villagers were stunned.

How much rice would that take?

How much wheat bran can this rice be exchanged for?

The villagers stood two meters away from Li Chang'an, not daring to approach.

Having never seen so much grain before, they were a little at a loss and began whispering among themselves.

When Xiong Er saw that the rice had gone from half a basket to a full basket, he didn't think much of it. Instead, he was even happier, as this would further prove that he wasn't lying.

Xiong Er ran up to Li Chang'an, bent down, and said.

"Sir, all the woodcutters are here. Not a single one is missing."

Li Chang'an looked at the noisy villagers without saying a word, but squinted and smiled at them.

There weren't many people, only about twenty, which was a bit lower than Li Chang'an had expected.

A village should have at least a hundred or two hundred people, how come there are so few? I was worried that it wouldn't be enough, so I took out fifty portions of rice.

The villagers, under Li Chang'an's gaze, dared not meet his eyes and fell silent.

You looked at me, I looked at you, staring at each other, neither daring to speak.

After a while, someone couldn't hold back any longer and looked at Er Ya next to Li Chang'an, asking, "Er Ya, does your brother-in-law need to change the firewood?"

It was Third Sister who spoke up. She felt that she and Second Sister were related by blood, so asking shouldn't be a problem.

She might be a shrew at home, but she didn't dare to say much in front of Li Chang'an.

After all, Li Chang'an, who was 1.8 meters tall, was still very tall and imposing in the eyes of the villagers whose average height was only 1.6 meters.

In addition, Li Chang'an had a rosy complexion, red lips and white teeth, which clearly indicated that he came from a wealthy family.

We peasants dared not speak to him; if we offended him, no one would stand up for us if we were beaten to death.

Before Er Ya could even open her mouth, Li Chang'an said, "Yes, I want to exchange firewood. Two jin of rice for a load of firewood from you."

"Really? You're not lying to us mountain folk."

Seeing that someone had spoken first, Cuihua gained courage and, relying on the number of people behind her, questioned them.

She looked back, hoping someone would give her courage.

To her surprise, the villagers all took a few steps back, pretending not to know her, which made her so angry that her teeth ached.

Damn it, you bunch of bastards! I spoke up for you, and you betrayed me.

Xiong Er quickly ran over, pulled Cuihua over, and said apologetically to Li Chang'an, "This is my wife. She's not very bright, so please don't take it personally, sir."

Li Chang'an waved his hand, indicating that he didn't mind.
