Chapter 4 Rice for Firewood

He smiled and nodded at Cuihua, then called her "sister-in-law".

Cuihua was very pleased to be called "sister-in-law," and her face lit up with a smile as she proudly tilted her head back at the villagers.

You pretended not to know me, you bunch of dogs.

"Are you really going to trade two pounds of rice for a load of firewood?"

It was Third Sister who spoke; she thought Second Sister's husband seemed easy to talk to.

Li Chang'an stood up and cupped his hands in greeting to the villagers.

The villagers responded helplessly, and he even saw some villagers bow to him at a 90-degree angle.

"My name is Li Chang'an, Er Ya's brother-in-law, and also Da Ya's husband. I'm not lying to you that I'm offering two catties of rice for a load of firewood. The grain is right here. If you don't believe me, you can take the grain home first, and then I'll bring the firewood over."

Since the rice is unlimited, he doesn't mind if someone takes it and then denies it; he has more than enough of it.

The villagers felt relieved after hearing this; what else could they say after all that?

They were all whispering and discussing amongst themselves, creating a noisy atmosphere.

"Trading a load of firewood for two pounds of rice? That guy must be a fool."

"You don't care if people are stupid or not, this is rice! I've only eaten it a few times in my life, during the last two years when the harvest was good."

“You still want to eat rice? One pound of rice can be exchanged for at least five pounds of wheat bran. Winter is coming soon. If you don’t exchange it for wheat bran, what will you eat with rice?”

After talking for a long time, no one dared to go up and take it. It was Third Sister who, with her back hunched over, walked up to the rice, grabbed a handful, and smelled the aroma of the rice.

When Er Ya saw her coming over, she tugged at Li Chang'an's sleeve and whispered, "This is Third Sister. When we were fleeing, Third Sister lent our family two catties of wheat bran."

Li Chang'an patted Er Ya's hair and nodded, indicating that he understood.

"Chang'an greets Third Sister."

Third Sister squinted her eyes and smiled, saying, "Then I'll take the liberty of calling you my eldest son-in-law."

"Uncle-in-law, when you say 'exchanging firewood,' do you mean we can bring our own firewood to exchange for it?"

"Sure, the more the better. Just like we said before, two pounds of rice for one load of firewood."

Third Sister nodded and turned to the villagers.

"Did you hear what my son-in-law said? The more the better. Everyone go home and get firewood to exchange for grain."

"good."

"The son-in-law is generous."

Hearing what Third Sister said, the villagers believed her to a large extent, and they all shouted excitedly, preparing to go home to get firewood.

"Wait, wait a minute."

Li Chang'an called out to them and spoke.

"Could you help me drag these trees back first, and also help me familiarize myself with the way to my house? We can exchange them at my house later, so I don't have to carry them back myself. I can't carry them all by myself."

"Hahaha"

The villagers burst into laughter, their faces beaming with joy.
