Chapter 36 Setting Fish Traps and Longline Fishing

"Brother Ye, are we going to set fish traps and longline fishing? Where are we going?"

Ah-Can rowed for a while, and the little wooden boat was now quite a distance from the shoreline.

Without thinking, Feng Ye said, "Let's go to the place where we went fishing the last two times."

He encountered schools of fish there for two consecutive days; how could he be satisfied without setting traps and longlines there?

"Okay!" Ah-Can said with a grin, "Brother Ye, are we going fishing again after we're done?"

"The tide is low today and it won't recede much, so it's quite dangerous."

"Since we're already out here, setting traps and longline fishing won't take much time. Instead of going back to be idle, we might as well go fishing."

"After the rain stops, we'll check around to see if there are any suitable isolated islands. The previous island is no longer an option, and we probably can't get out of the mudflats."

Feng Ye also had this idea, otherwise he wouldn't have brought a sand shovel and snakeskin bag.

The small boat moved forward, slowly moving away from the coastline.

Various buoys began to appear in the surrounding waters, all of which were various nets cast by fishermen.

"By the way, weren't you planning to buy a boat? Have you made any progress?"

Feng Ye remembered that his elder brother had already found a boat, so he casually asked about it.

"Not yet. Brother Wen and Brother Wu went out to inquire about which family wants to sell, and I also sent my dad."

Ah-Can shook his head.

Second-hand wooden boats are really hard to buy; not many people are willing to sell them unless there's a sudden family emergency and they urgently need money.

Haven't you considered ordering a new ship?

"A new ship isn't cost-effective; we'll talk about it if we really can't find one."

Time passed slowly, and the little wooden boat finally reached its destination.

"Let's stay here, but row slower."

Feng Ye tidied up the fish traps, tying them together one by one, and put small fish chopped up with a sand shovel into each trap before casting the anchor into the sea.

As the small wooden boat moved, the fish trap attached to the small anchor was pulled down into the sea.

The last fish trap also had a small anchor for securing it, and a buoy connected to a long rope.

Feng Ye's fish traps were set in groups of ten, and he divided them into five groups, placing them into the seabed at intervals.

After setting up the fish traps, he brought out five bamboo baskets.

Each bamboo basket was filled with countless coils of fishing line, and the edges of the baskets were hooked with a hundred fishhooks, densely packed together.

This is longline fishing.

This is a traditional fishing method, in which many equally spaced branches are tied to a main line, with hooks and bait attached to the ends of the branches.

Using a float and sinker device, the branch line is laid in the surface, middle and bottom layers, and the main line is laid in the surface and middle layers through the float and float. By controlling the length of the float line and the sinking force, the fishing tackle is sunk to the required water layer and floats with the current during operation.

Although this fishing method is traditional, it remains one of the most important fishing methods, both now and in the future.

In particular, there will be specialized tuna longline fishing for tuna in the future.

"Ah-Can, row the boat forward."

"Okay, Brother Ye."

After the small wooden boat had traveled a distance, Feng Ye first threw the anchor into the sea, then threw out the buoy, connected the main line, and then took the fishing hooks from the edge of the basket and cast the fishing gear into the sea one by one.

On the way out, Feng Ye had already hooked the live shrimp onto the fishing hook, which saved him a lot of trouble.

After casting the first basket of main line, connect the end of the main line in the first basket to the beginning of the second basket of main line, as well as the buoy rope and sinker rope, and then cast it into the sea. Then cast the second basket of main line, and so on, until all five baskets of fishing line are cast. Finally, cast the tail anchor and buoy.

After Feng Ye finished casting all the longlines, A-Can asked, "Now that you've finished, shouldn't we go fishing?"

Seeing his impatient look, Feng Ye laughed and said, "Alright, let's go and see if there's any isolated island around that's suitable for fishing."

"It doesn't necessarily have to be a beach exposed, as long as it's not too steep and people can get up there."

"Don't be careless, safety first. Let's look for it first."

Ah-chan rowed the boat toward a deserted island they had never been to before, but when they got closer, they found that even getting onto the island was difficult due to their current location.

"Take a walk around this island."

The island wasn't very big, and we walked around it quickly, but we still couldn't find a suitable place to go up.

This isolated island is surrounded by reefs, and more importantly, they are very steep, with almost no footholds. Coupled with the constant crashing of the waves, it's easy to be swept into the sea.

The higher the risk, the greater the potential reward.

On an isolated island like this, constantly battered by waves, there must be plenty of goods on the rocks, and perhaps even goose barnacles.

"Let's go, we definitely can't get to this island, let's look for other islands."

As Feng Ye spoke, he secretly memorized the small island in his heart.

He planned to wait a few more days, until the 30th, and then see if there was any opportunity.

"There must be a lot of goods, but it's a pity we can't get them up there."

Dejected, Ah-Can rowed the oar towards the next deserted island.

For some reason, they searched two more isolated islands but couldn't find a suitable place to fish.

"How about we go back? It's almost noon, we can have lunch there."

"Let's go check out the island over there. If that doesn't work, we'll go back."

Ah-Can looked unwilling and pointed to a lonely island in the middle of the sea in the distance.

Feng Ye shrugged indifferently: "Whatever makes you happy. Anyway, you're the one rowing."

"I refuse to believe that I'll be so unlucky today that I won't be able to find an island to go to."

Ah-chan said through gritted teeth, rowing the oar rapidly.

After paddling for about half an hour, we finally got close to the isolated island.

When Ah-chan saw what the island looked like, his heart sank.

What you see now is a steep cliff, not even a reef, even steeper than the three isolated islands you saw before. Unless you can fly, you can forget about getting up there.

"Holy crap, how am I supposed to get up there? Why am I so unlucky?"

"Ah Chan, you're really unlucky. You searched for four islands, but you couldn't get on any of them."

Feng Ye laughed so hard that tears almost came out.

"You're still laughing? I've been your laborer all morning for nothing."

"I didn't beg you to come; you came of your own accord."

Ah-Can said angrily, "Go back and shake it yourself, I'm not doing it anymore."

"Okay, I'll do it." Taking the oar from Ah-Can, Feng Ye asked again, "Are you sure you don't want to look anymore?"

Ah-Can said dejectedly, "Forget it, I didn't check the almanac before I went out today. I'd better go back and lie down."

"I think you haven't worshipped Mazu."

As Feng Ye spoke, he adjusted the pressure of his oars, maneuvering the small wooden boat to turn it around, preparing to row back.
