Song Yingying cried all the way home. When she arrived at Heping Lane at 10 p.m., she gently knocked on the Song family's door.
Song Rongrong opened the door.
Song Rongrong exclaimed in surprise, "Yingying, why are you back?"
Song Yingying's voice was hoarse, "Fourth sister, I want to go home tonight. I didn't bring my homework, and I want to read tonight."
Song Rongrong opened her lips, but couldn't say a word.
The light was dim at night, and Song Yingying's face was downcast, so her reddened eyes could not be seen.
Song Rongrong didn't think much of it and urged Song Yingying to come inside quickly.
Xu Guiying came out when she heard the noise and asked, "Who's here?"
Song Rongrong stood in the yard. "Mom, Yingying is back."
Xu Guiying went to the two sisters' room. Song Yingying was reading at the table. She turned her body to the side and said, "Aunt, I wanted to come back to read. I haven't read for the past few days. I also want to go to the library tomorrow. It's close to home, so I came back."
The little girl's tricks weren't enough, so Xu Guiying didn't expose her, but gave Song Yingying a deep look.
"Go to bed early tonight, we'll talk about it tomorrow."
Song Yingying said "okay".
Song Rongrong sensed something was wrong, turned the person around, and saw Song Yingying's red eyes.
"Yingying, are you crying?"
Song Yingying sighed, "Fourth Sister, don't ask anymore, I want to read."
That dedication to studying... Song Rongrong felt ashamed of herself.
Song Rongrong frowned and said, "Tell your fourth sister quickly."
Song Yingying shook her head, not wanting to talk.
Song Rongrong: "Then let's talk about it after you've finished reading the book."
Song Yingying still didn't want to talk about it, and Song Rongrong didn't get to hear it that night.
The next morning, Song Yingying got up early.
Xu Guiying pulled her niece into her room and asked her about what happened last night.
Unable to withstand her aunt's words, Song Yingying had no choice but to tell her the whole story.
Xu Guiying listened with a furrowed brow, then looked at Song Yingying with a worried expression.
"If you don't want to go, then you don't have to go."
Song Yingying is in a much better mood now than she was last night.
"Aunt, I just think Grandma shouldn't blame Mom."
Xu Guiying was unaware of Song Qiurou and Qin Wenyuan's affair, and even Song Xinfu and Old Master Song were not entirely clear about it. Moreover, Song Qiurou herself was unwilling to say anything back then.
Xu Guiying could only say, "Leave the affairs of the older generation to the elders to handle. You are just a child, so just live your life well."
Qin Zheng arrived around 10 a.m., saying he was going to take Song Yingying out to play today.
Song Yingying's excuse about going to the library last night was just that—an excuse. She had already told Xu Guiying that there was no need to go to the library.
Song Yingying frowned: "I don't want to go out to play."
Qin Zheng pursed his lips and advised, "Grandma was hospitalized last night, do you want to go see her?"
Song Yingying's eyes widened suddenly. "Hospitalized? Is it serious?"
Qin Zheng: "You'll see when you get there. Grandma said she really wants to see you."
The two were talking right in front of their house.
Xu Guiying came out of the house and vaguely heard a few words. She walked closer and asked, "Who's in the hospital?"
Qin Zheng looked somewhat troubled. "My grandmother."
Xu Guiying glanced at Song Yingying.
Xu Guiying sighed, "Go take a look, then go home."
Song Yingying slowly went back to her room to change her clothes.
Song Rongrong was reading a book when she asked, "Yingying, where are you going?"
Song Yingying: "Fourth Sister, something urgent has come up, I need to go out for a bit."
Song Rongrong didn't ask any more questions, but simply told him to be careful on the road.
After getting in the car, Qin Zheng hesitated before speaking, "Grandma's health hasn't been very good these past two years. You don't need to take some of her words to heart. Just listen to the good ones."
-
In the private hospital room, Grandma Qin lay in bed, looking completely different from the energetic and lively old lady she had been the day before.
Grandpa Qin was in the ward when he saw Song Yingying arrive and told her to come over quickly.
“Yingying, come here.”
The old man glanced at his wife and told her to stop talking nonsense.
Song Yingying whispered, "Grandpa and Grandma."
Grandma Qin, with her gray hair, was still receiving an IV drip. "Yingying's here."
Song Yingying's eyes stung with tears. "Grandma, how are you feeling? What did the doctor say?"
Last night, the old lady was so angry that she had a heart attack. The doctor diagnosed that there was nothing seriously wrong, and she can go home after finishing her IV drip today.
Grandma Qin shook her head, "Yingying, Grandma is fine, don't worry."
Song Yingying felt terrible and sniffled with her head down.
Grandma Qin said again, "I was wrong last night, please don't be angry, please forgive me, okay?"
Song Yingying burst into tears and threw herself against the bedside, sobbing uncontrollably.
"Grandma, I'm not angry anymore. You should rest and recover."
Grandma Qin touched Song Yingying's head with the hand that wasn't on the IV drip, "Then why don't you come home and live here?"
Song Yingying looked up, her face covered in tears. "Grandma, I..."
Grandpa Qin interrupted at the right moment, "Alright, it's good that the child has come to see you. We can talk about other things later."
Song Yingying sobbed; she still didn't want to go back to the Qin family.
Grandma Qin didn't press the matter further. After having lunch with Grandma Qin at the hospital, Grandpa Qin sent the person away and asked Qin Zheng to take Song Yingying home.
Throughout the journey, Qin Zheng observed Song Yingying's expression.
"Grandma's health hasn't been good these past few years. She has to stay in the hospital for a few days every year. Don't blame yourself too much."
Song Yingying scratched her palms, and now, looking back, she realized that what she said last night might have been a little hurtful.
Song Yingying moved her lips, "I...I will go back to see them more often in the future."
Rome wasn't built in a day.
Grandma's prejudice against Mom has lasted for so many years, how could it change overnight?
Song Yingying looked out the window in frustration.
