Miao Yijia's shoulders shook with tears as she excused Chen Songbai: "It's all my fault. I'll pretend nothing happened. Don't blame yourself."
Chen Songbai's face turned as black as the bottom of a pot, and he began to recall seriously -
He left work on time today and came home to pack a few clothes to take to the company dormitory. Last time, he left in a hurry and only took two sets of clothes, so he had trouble changing. Miao Yijia was cooking. She said her mother had sent some local specialties from her hometown and invited him to stay for dinner.
He suddenly remembered to talk to her about renting a house. He had looked at several houses in his spare time these days, but he couldn't make up his mind. He wanted her to choose one herself, so he stayed.
Miao Yijiajia cooked a table full of dishes and opened a bottle of red wine, which was said to be a gift from her friend. She had been reluctant to drink it, but tonight the dishes were rich, so some wine would be perfect to go with it.
He didn't want to drink because he had to drive back to the company soon, but he couldn't resist Miao Yijia's enthusiasm, so he drank a glass. Perhaps because work was finally over and he was no longer so busy, he felt relaxed. After one glass, he couldn't help but refill it, and before he knew it, he was drunk.
While feeling dizzy, he seemed to hear Miao Yijiajia talking in his ear. He couldn't hear what she said clearly, so he waved his hand to indicate that he didn't want to drink anymore.
He heard clearly what she said afterwards. She said to help him go back to his room to rest.
Miao Yijia supported him. She was short, and he was big. They stumbled towards the bedroom. His legs hit the edge of the bed, his knees buckled, and he lost his balance and fell headfirst onto the bed...
I can't remember what happened afterwards.
The memories came to an abrupt end. Chen Songbai pressed the summer quilt used to cover himself with one hand and hit his head with the other. He tried hard to recall, but he couldn't remember anything.
Turning his head, he noticed the mess and bloodstains on the bed sheet. He froze, the color draining from his face in an instant, and looked at Miao Yijia. She was speechless, only crying.
Chen Songbai was so upset by the crying that he frowned and denied it firmly: "Impossible, absolutely impossible, I didn't do anything to you."
Miao Yijiajia helplessly hugged her bare arms, crying almost to death. Seeing him like this, she forced herself to say, "I helped you to the bed, and you suddenly hugged me, calling my cousin's name. I was scared. My mind went blank for two seconds, and then you kissed me. I couldn't break free, and then... then you..." She covered her mouth, heartbroken.
All the blood in his body rushed to his head. Chen Songbai kept shaking his head, refusing to believe what she said was true. He could not possibly do something so beastly. He murmured, "No, no."
Even if he was drugged, he would not touch his sister.
Chen Songbai stumbled into the bathroom and vomited over the toilet. He felt incredibly nauseous, and it wasn't just the alcohol. Miao Yijia's description had made him physically nauseous.
He vomited until bile came out, his mouth bitter, and there was nothing left to vomit. Cold sweat broke out on his forehead, and he raised his hand and slapped himself hard: "How could it be, she is my sister, how could it be..."
He seemed to have lost his soul, repeating the same words over and over in panic, his eyes bloodshot and hot tears flowing.
Miao Yijia couldn't bear to see him continue to torture himself, so she ran in, her slippers falling off. She knelt barefoot on the ground and hugged Chen Songbai from behind, pressing her face against his back: "Don't do this, I'm not my mother's biological child, and I have no blood relationship with you. Don't you know that I was brought back for adoption?"
Her mother had given birth to two sons and wanted a daughter, but due to health reasons she couldn't have another child, so she brought her home to raise. This matter was no secret among relatives, and they would occasionally bring it up during Chinese New Year meals and conversations, and they had never avoided it.
Xia Xuan looked at them coldly, like a spectator standing aside. She nodded and laughed coldly, "So that's how it is."
Hearing her speak, Chen Songbai seemed to wake up from a nightmare. His body trembled and he turned his head to look at her. He saw a smile on her pale face and saw her back away and leave the bedroom.
Chen Songbai was anxious and wanted to chase her, but he was dragging a burden with him.
"Xiaoxuan!" He screamed miserably and pushed away Miao Yijiajia who was clinging to him.
Miao Yijiajia lost her balance and fell face down on the cold tile floor with a "bang". Her elbow bone was hit and she felt a piercing pain.
Chen Songbai stood up, his head dizzy. He took two steps and realized he had no clothes on. He hurried to the cloakroom to find a T-shirt and trousers to put on. But as soon as he came out of the cloakroom, Miao Yijia stopped him.
"You've been drinking, you can't drive, you..."
Before she could finish her words, Chen Songbai shoved her away again. Miao Yijia slammed into the wall, feeling pain all over her body. She bit her lip tightly and stopped trying to stop him, staring at Chen Songbai's back with a gloomy look.
*
It wasn't until she left the complex that Xia Xuan couldn't hold back her tears. She had left in such a hurry that she'd left her canvas bag at home, and she hadn't even got her phone or wallet with her.
She didn't want to see Chen Songbai, so she wiped away her tears, ran to the side of the road to stop a car, and went back to Su Jinru.
She borrowed the driver's phone to call Xia Yue. When she arrived at the gate of the community, Xia Yue was standing there waiting. After paying the fare, she looked at Xia Xuan who got out of the car with a worried look on her face.
"What's wrong?" Xia Yue could tell she was in a bad mood over the phone. "Didn't you go home? Why are you here again?"
Xia Xuan didn't want to talk. She felt sad and desperate when she thought of that scene.
It was like God was playing a joke on her.
Xia Yue didn't ask any more questions, took her hand and turned to walk into the community.
Su Jinru had already returned to her room, leaving a light on in the living room. Xia Yue turned on all the other lights, making the room bright and clear, revealing Xia Xuan's distraught look. Feeling distressed and helpless, Xia Yue held her head against her chest and said, "If you encounter something unhappy, tell me and I'll help you. Don't hold it in and hurt yourself."
