After lunch, Liu Jing followed her mother, Lu Ying, to sleep in the first room on the east side of the second floor, which had been Lu Ying's room before.
She was thinking of using her afternoon nap as an excuse to ask Lu Ying about her divorce, so she stared wide-eyed and full of energy.
Looking at her darling's bright, dark eyes, Lu Ying leaned over and pinched her little nose. "Isn't my little darling sleepy? Your eyes are so wide open."
Liu Jing shook her little head, hesitated, and then said what she had thought of, "Mom, are you and Dad going to separate?"
Lu Ying had just finished washing her face and was applying a refreshing face cream when she heard this. She paused, quickly applied the cream twice, then walked to the bedside, picked her up, and placed her on her lap. With a gentle expression, she asked, "Jingjing, don't you want your mom and dad to separate?"
Liu Jing certainly couldn't say that she was hoping you two would break up quickly, and given her young age, she still had some expectations for Liu Fengming. So she tilted her little head, pretended to think, and then said "hmm" in a childish voice.
"Jingjing loves her mother and wants to see her father often, but her father is never home. Whenever he comes back, he upsets her mother, and when her mother is upset, Jingjing is also sad."
"Mom is unhappy when she's with Dad. Jingjing wants Mom to be happy. If Mom would be happy if she were separated from Dad, then let's separate from Dad."
After saying that, she muttered under her breath, "Anyway, Dad's rarely home, Jingjing's already used to it..."
Despite being a small person, his words warmed and moved Lu Ying, yet also filled her with bittersweet feelings.
She pulled Liu Jing into her arms, pressed her soft forehead against the little dumpling's, and held back her tears, whispering gently, "My baby is so good, it melts my heart."
She had made up her mind to divorce Liu Fengming. She had originally planned to patiently explain the situation to Liu Jing, but she didn't expect her precious daughter to be so sensible.
She only has herself to blame for her poor judgment; she was fooled by Liu Fengming's face and ended up with such an irresponsible father for her precious child.
"Don't cry, Mommy. Jingjing will always stay with you." Liu Jing looked up and used her little hands to wipe away the tears from the corners of the woman's eyes.
Lu Ying snapped out of her daze, wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes, and looked down at her precious daughter in her arms. "Jingjing is such a good girl, and Mommy can't bear to see her sad, so Mommy has decided to separate from Daddy so that my baby won't be sad anymore."
In her past life, she suddenly lost her mother. She was young at the time and was caught off guard by the sudden changes in her surroundings. Before she could even cherish the warmth of her mother, she was forced to forget it all.
Now, feeling her mother's love again, Liu Jing's heart was filled with warmth and tears welled up in her eyes. She couldn't hold back her small body as she clung to Lu Ying's neck, pleading, "Mmm, Mommy, hug me~"
"My baby~" Lu Ying hugged Liu Jing tightly as well. After tomorrow, it would be just the two of them, mother and daughter, relying on each other for survival.
After saying what she wanted to say, Liu Jing's young body couldn't resist the sleepiness and she fell asleep in the blink of an eye.
Lu Ying gently placed the little girl on the bed, stroking her round, pink face with unwavering determination in her eyes.
As a husband, Liu Fengming failed to fulfill his responsibilities as a man; as a father, he also failed to fulfill his responsibilities as a father.
Thinking of what he said about her in front of Liu Jing that morning, a hint of disgust flashed in Lu Ying's eyes.
She must have been out of her mind to follow a man like Liu Fengming!
The more she thought about it, the more regretful she became. She immediately got up and searched for her documents, wishing she could get a divorce right now so she wouldn't have to deceive her precious daughter anymore.
*
When Lu Chengyang woke Liu Jing up, it was already four o'clock in the afternoon. Lu Ying had already gone to work. She was still rubbing her eyes in a daze when he took her sandals and carried her downstairs.
The other children were waiting at the gate when they saw Lu Chengyang running towards them carrying a chubby little dumpling.
The little dumpling, still sleepy, rubbed its eyes with its chubby little hands, a tuft of hair sticking up on its head, its two little cheeks flushed pink, and its rosy little mouth pouting in dissatisfaction. It was so cute that it melted everyone's hearts.
"Little Jingjing isn't awake yet? Come on, let me help you put on your shoes!"
Song Daqian stepped forward, snatched the small sandals from Lu Chengyang's hand, and gently stuffed Liu Jing's chubby little feet into the shoes.
Qiao Xiaoran also insisted on giving it to her, and the others gathered around to watch.
The chubby little feet were held by the older brothers and sisters, and the round little toes were all pink, trying little by little to squeeze into the white sandals.
The two got dressed almost at the same time. Lu Chengyang put a small sun hat with a pink bow on her head, and Song Daqian carried her personal water bottle. The group walked out in a grand procession.
The riverbank is a bit far away, located on the north side of the village; it takes at least ten minutes to walk there.
Although it was four in the afternoon, the summer heat was still unbearable. Perhaps because she was still young, Liu Jing felt sleepy and couldn't muster any energy.
She has short legs and walks slowly, so she has to be carried. After carrying her for a while, Lu Chengyang was already sweating profusely.
When Song Daqian, the oldest among them, offered to carry him instead, Lu Chengyang was indeed hot and tired, so he didn't protect him anymore and handed Liu Jing to him.
Two or three years older is a different story. Liu Jing was held firmly in Song Daqian's arms, who would pinch her chubby little face from time to time, and kept calling her "Little Jing sister".
Perhaps because she was sleepy, Liu Jing reacted much slower and no longer felt uncomfortable. She leaned on Song Daqian's shoulder and let him carry her.
After a while, Song Tianhao took over carrying her. This young boy wasn't very talkative and was rather quiet, but he wasn't introverted either. After he picked her up, he smiled and called her gently, "Little Jingjing."
