The next day at noon, after the food was sold out, Bu Ling, Wu Yuanyuan, and Sister Ma asked Manager Zhu for leave, intending to go see Tan Xiao.
It was Sister Ma who suggested it. After all, she had worked with Tan Xiao for a while and wanted to curry favor with Uncle Tan, so she suggested visiting her.
Wu Yuanyuan did it all for Grandpa Tan; she truly regarded him as her mentor, and he taught her a great deal.
Since Bling was idle anyway,
Manager Zhu readily agreed and even gave Bu Ling two yuan to pass on to Tan Xiao. Manager Zhu had a good relationship with Grandpa Tan, and it was only right and proper for him to go and visit him. However, as a man, it wasn't convenient for him to attend a woman's childbirth.
The three of them couldn't ride a bicycle, so they walked, with Aunt Ma leading the way.
The apartment that Grandpa Tan rented for Tan Xiao was in a tenement building. Most of the residents in this building were factory workers or had family members working for the government; it was like a high-end residential area in later times.
It's not far from the state-run restaurant, about a half-hour walk. "This is Tan Xiao's house."
As Sister Ma spoke, she knocked on Tan Xiao's door.
After waiting a moment, an old woman opened the door. The old woman had a somewhat mean face, and her triangular eyes looked the three of them up and down before she asked rudely, "What is it?"
Sister Ma: "Auntie, we are Tan Xiao's colleagues. We heard she had a baby, so we came to see her."
Seeing the old lady's attitude completely change, Bu Ling said, "Oh, she's a colleague. Come in quickly."
The three of them were speechless, but since they were already there, they had no choice but to bite the bullet and go in.
Tan Xiao's family lived in a single room, about twenty square meters in size. Besides a bed, there was almost no furniture. As the three of them entered, they saw the emaciated Tan Xiao lying on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. Beside her, a child was wailing loudly.
The three people's entry did not attract Tan Xiao's attention at all. When the old lady saw Tan Xiao like this, a flash of disgust crossed her eyes. However, she stepped forward warmly and said, "Daughter-in-law, your colleagues have come to see you. Why don't you talk to them? I'll take care of Zhao Di."
Bu Ling raised an eyebrow. Zhao Di?
Tan Xiao looked at the three of them, her eyes calm and expressionless: "What are you doing here?"
At times like this, it's Sister Ma who comes to the rescue: "We heard you had a baby, so we came to see you." Sister Ma placed the ten eggs she had brought on the bed.
Bu Ling added half a pound of brown sugar, and Wu Yuanyuan used a small piece of cloth, enough to make a small garment for the child.
Han Yu's eyes lit up when she saw it. Before Tan Xiao could speak, she hurriedly stepped forward and said, "Oh dear, you've come all this way. Why did you bring anything?" As she spoke, she quickly packed up the things. "Daughter-in-law, please speak to me. I'll go boil some water for you."
He took the items, turned around, put them in the cabinet, and locked the cabinet door.
Tan Xiao coldly replied, "I'm nothing to see. You can leave now and don't come back."
Ms. Ma was a little embarrassed; it was the first time she had ever been kicked out.
"Tan Xiao, take good care of yourself. We're going back now." Since they were already telling them to leave, they couldn't say anything more. With that, Sister Ma turned and walked away.
Bling followed suit.
Wu Yuanyuan held back for a moment, but finally couldn't help but say, "Master is very worried about you."
Tan Xiao's eyes flickered, but she quickly calmed down, turned her head away, and pretended not to hear.
Seeing this, Wu Yuanyuan sighed and followed.
Han Yu's mother was boiling water outside when she saw the three of them come out: "Are you leaving already? Won't you sit down for a bit? Have some hot water before you go?"
"No, ma'am, we still have work to do, so we'll head back now." Sister Ma
Han Yu Niang didn't really want to stay. Watching the three of them walk out of the building, she lowered her old face, went inside, and slammed the door shut to show her anger.
"You jinx! Who are you looking at with that long face? I came to take care of you during your postpartum period and I've even made you sick."
Tan Xiao acted as if she hadn't heard.
"And you, you good-for-nothing, all you do is cry and cry. If you keep crying, I'll throw you into the back mountains to feed the wolves."
A flash of hatred crossed Tan Xiao's eyes. She gently patted her daughter to comfort her.
"My Han Yu is really unlucky to have married you. He can't help with work, can't take care of the family, and is even targeted by his father-in-law. If I had known, I would have been better off marrying someone from the countryside than marrying a slut like you."
Han Yu's mother had a very low opinion of this daughter-in-law. She had initially flattered her hoping her father would give her son a permanent position, but things hadn't gone as planned. Not only did she not get the position, but she also swindled so much money from the family to buy this good-for-nothing a job.
That father-in-law was even more outrageous, drawing up some ridiculous agreement saying that the Han family couldn't touch that job. Why should they? That was a job they paid for!
"Let me tell you, if you don't want to be divorced, go beg your father to find Han Yu a new job, preferably a permanent one. If it's an easy job, you'll have to give up your job for the eldest son. Otherwise, you can expect to be divorced." Han Yu's mother became increasingly angry.
This slut walked in heavily pregnant; who knows if the child in her belly is even her son's? In my opinion, this woman is just promiscuous; if she could sleep with my son before marriage, she could be unfaithful to others. If it weren't for this good-for-nothing's powerful father, I would never have let her in.
"Also, since you can't have children, then let's have one adopted at home. Don't worry, they're all Han family children, and they'll take care of you in your old age. I think your sister-in-law's youngest son is quite good." Han Yu's mother said imperiously.
In her opinion, city women are just too delicate. She just fell and went into premature labor! Premature labor is bad enough, but she also injured her body and can't have children anymore. Isn't that going to cut off Han Yu's lineage? Why doesn't she just die already?
When Tan Xiao heard the words "cannot have children," her eyes changed, and she looked at the old woman with a murderous glint in her eyes.
