It's still daylight!
This isn't Kashgar in Xinjiang or Heixiazi Island in Heilongjiang. How could it be as bright as day at two in the morning?
This completely violates the laws of nature.
"Impossible, this is impossible, how could we have walked for twelve hours without feeling anything..."
"How could there be ghosts in this world! It's all fake, it's all fake!"
Attorney Zhou squatted down with an incredulous expression, pulling hard on his hair, his body beginning to sway uncontrollably.
No, I just said she was frighteningly calm, how could she suddenly break down?
"Attorney Zhou, are you alright?"
"Don't touch me!"
Attorney Zhou pushed me away forcefully, let out a desperate scream, and ran towards the village like a madman.
The calmness and rationality I had just felt had vanished without a trace.
It was as if this bizarre phenomenon had completely shattered her cherished worldview and values, plunging her into endless madness and confusion.
Watching Attorney Zhou's departing figure, I sighed helplessly.
Humans are sometimes just that fragile.
Despite their seemingly strong exterior, their inner beliefs and rationality are actually incredibly fragile in the face of unimaginable shocks.
Sometimes, even a single word or a small mistake can instantly break a person's defenses.
I turned around to tell Luo Tianhe and Su Meng to leave.
But then they saw two people squatting in front of several burning cigarettes, their eyes closed, their noses close to the smoke, taking large, greedy drags, looking completely absorbed.
What are you two doing?
I patted Luo Tianhe on the shoulder.
He slowly turned his head, his eyes glazed over, his expression seemingly lost in some kind of extreme pleasure and intoxication, looking exactly like a drug addict inhaling flour.
"This cigarette feels so good, it smells so good."
Su Meng, standing to the side, was the same. Her eyes were closed, her cheeks flushed an unnatural red, and a blissful smile played on her lips. She was lost in her own little world.
"I didn't expect cigarettes to taste so good, they're so filling."
What kind of bizarre way of smoking is this, lighting a cigarette, placing it on the ground, and then inhaling the rising smoke through your nose?
Under Luo Tianhe and Su Meng's almost frantic and greedy smoking, the burning cigarette turned to ash at an extraordinary speed.
Luo Tianhe seemed to still be enjoying himself, and hurriedly took out a cigarette from his pocket and lit it.
Just then, a strange fragrance quietly entered my nostrils.
The first whiff was like the fragrance of blooming flowers in spring, or the sweet aroma of ripe fruit on an autumn night, rich and mellow, which made me squat down and take a big breath as well.
After smoking it, unlike the bland and pungent taste of ordinary cigarettes, it gives people a sense of satisfaction as if they have tasted the finest delicacies in the world, and even makes their stomachs feel a little full.
wrong!
I suddenly came to my senses.
This is ghostly incense!
It is said that only the spirits of the dead can absorb incense.
After all, as spirits, they cannot taste food like the living.
Therefore, whenever we eat the offerings made to our ancestors, we always feel a sense of emptiness and tastelessness.
Because those offerings had already been enjoyed by those unseen spirits.
Could it be that...
Are we already dead?
The thought, like a cold boulder, fell heavily onto my heart.
I instinctively looked at Luo Tianhe and Su Meng's side, hoping they would stop smoking.
Upon closer inspection, they saw two dark figures standing quietly beside them, one hand already silently resting on their shoulders.
As if sensing my gaze, the two dark figures slowly turned their heads.
In that instant, I felt a chill run from the soles of my feet straight up to the top of my head.
Their faces are exactly the same as Luo Tianhe and Su Meng!
He even grinned at me with an extremely eerie smile.
I can't smoke anymore!
I took a deep breath, mustered all my strength, and roared, "Get out!"
Luo Tianhe and Su Meng shuddered violently, as if struck by a high-voltage current.
The two dark figures standing behind them vanished without a trace in an instant, as if they had never existed.
Luo Tianhe and the other person looked at me with blank expressions, as if they had just woken up from a deep nightmare but had no memory of what happened in the dream.
But after a moment, their gaze slowly shifted back to the still-burning cigarette on the ground.
Are you coming again?
I quickly took the peach wood needle hanging from my neck and pricked it between Luo Tianhe's eyebrows. I did the same to Su Meng as well.
"Holy crap, what did you use to stab me?!"
Luo Tianhe covered his forehead, his eyes beginning to focus.
I pulled open his collar and let him see for himself.
A black handprint was clearly imprinted on his shoulder.
The skin around the handprint also showed bluish-black lines like a spider web, and the fingers were thin and long with unnatural bends at the joints, unlike a normal person's handprint.
"Holy crap! What is this thing?!"
"It was taken by a ghost!" I said calmly.
"Taken by a ghost...?"
Luo Tianhe shuddered.
I briefly recounted the process of them squatting on the ground smoking and the appearance of a dark shadow behind them.
Upon hearing this, Luo Tianhe stumbled and nearly fell to the ground.
"You...you mean we're already dead?"
After saying that, he slapped himself hard.
He didn't seem to feel any pain, and a look of confusion appeared on his face. But just a few seconds later, he covered his face and cried out, "Ouch!"
Seeing his appearance, I knew that his situation was similar to mine, and the pain was slowly disappearing.
